I've just returned to MN after a fair absence (needed some advice about something) and see that this is about to become available. I won't be paying, but will you?

Irial; does it matter? The value that posters put on being able to use the forum isn't fiscal, it's a free-of-charge board

The issue is that mn want to charge users for providing content. Content that is shared with places like the daily mail, and used for data mining.
Like turkeys voting for Christmas.

It's a failed business model - and actually, very early on in the current crisis, and let's face it, a business that is completely non-essential.

I've posted on irial thread which asks about why people use MN. Basically anything which isnt a convo forum is a vehicle for advertisers, and the convos themselves are media fodder, with the users providing the content.

Because it's a classic of the early internet businesses - and has done very well actually to keep going as long as it has. But MN hasnt kept up with user expectations about functionality, has not protected its users (customers?) from hacking and data breaches.

It's also over-extended in terms of staffing, and probably in terms of salaries (£350k a month salary bill? I wonder how that is actually allocated across the 100 staff... imagining some major discrepancies).

And finally rosievio if MN wants to make as much cash as poss at the early stage of the financial crisis, it really shouldn't be asking its users to stump up £50 a year for the privilege of an edit button and 'fewer' (not no) ads.

Ijustneed · 13/04/2020 21:38

I won't be paying. This forum would be nothing without its posters. I'd have paid a small donation, but I don't have a lot of money. Now mn will become even more middle class, only those who can afford will be in here.

fruitpastille · 13/04/2020 21:48

I wouldn't pay it because I find mumsnet a pleasant distraction from daily life but not much more. If it didn't exist I would read a lot more books, just as I did before the internet was invented. They are only expecting a 10 per cent uptake anyway.

Witchcraftandhokum · 14/04/2020 13:28

So am I right in that the money gets you an edit function and fewer ads, but we don't know how many fewer?

You get (apparently) 15 seconds to edit once posted. Good luck.

and fewer ads, but we don't know how many fewer?
I think there was a screengrab example of what it would look like, but I don't recall being wowed by it.

DappledThings · 14/04/2020 14:41

I'm just posting this to try the edit feature

DappledThings · 14/04/2020 14:42

Yeah. There is no edit feature. But then I really don't want one so I'm happy to keep contributing a fiver a month!

Witchcraftandhokum · 14/04/2020 14:43

Dappled have you noticed fewer ads?

OP posts:
PleaseStopCrying · 14/04/2020 14:46

Yeah. There is no edit feature

In fairness Justines crypic post said it would be coming at some point but rather unhelpfully never actually gave a rough idea of when this might be. In theory anyone who paid could be paying for several months before the mythical edit button makes an appearance, if it even happens at all.

So to make it clear to anyone left wondering all you get at the moment is fewer ads. Which for £5 a month is madness when ad blocker removes them all for free.

HollySideEyes · 14/04/2020 14:52

I'm not paying. They could of easily of done these features ages ago but choose not too.

.

DappledThings · 14/04/2020 14:53

have you noticed fewer ads?

Yes. I use the mobile site, not the app and there is no longer one in the middle of a thread or at the top.

RishiSunakFanClub · 14/04/2020 17:27

iS the absence of two ads worth £5 a month when you could use adblock for free for no ads?

RishiSunakFanClub · 14/04/2020 17:28

Sorry - that should be 'Is' - unfortunately no edit function to change it.

DappledThings · 14/04/2020 17:32

I'm not bothered about the ads. I'm just happy to support something I use a lot. Same with the Guardian.

Really? You don't see a difference between a long-established (although now struggling) national newspaper and website whose users have admitted it's functionality is not great, whose users generate the content, and whose users often find their stories in the tabloids?

DappledThings · 14/04/2020 17:58

I see the difference, I just don't care!

MoonfaceAndSilky · 14/04/2020 18:17

No don't think I'll be paying.

Has anyone had a look at that other new site that I can't name? Someone on here recommended it and I have to say It looks quite good, like mn of old.

Mammyloveswine · 14/04/2020 19:00

I think it's shocking... a pound a month I'd pay maybe 2 but not a fiver!
