To think that 10 easter eggs per child from MIL is atrocious

garlicbread82 · 12/04/2020 09:27

MIL has just dropped off 10 easter eggs each to my 3 DCs (we maintained social distancing, she left them at the end of the path).

Now dont get me wrong, I am greatful, but 10 each? Really? I think this is not only overzealous, it also undermines me. I have told her in previous years that one egg each is more than enough, and maybe a small gift, however she continues to undermine me in front of my DCs.

I have allowed my DCs to choose one egg each from the pile to go with the eggs they have already received, and the rest will be dropped off at the local food bank next week. DH thinks I am being unreasonable, and has gone upstairs in a huff Hmm Happy Easter hey?

YOU are some people. I’m beginning to think you’re on a wind up!

As a result I got diabetes and had to have a very major operation to lose weight, I have to take vitamins for life, I'm often now sick when I eat anything.

Hate to break it to you but we overindulged at Easter and Christmas (huge family) and we’re not fat, no diabetes, no surgery...

So, sorry but your story is just that - yours.

HarrySnotter · 12/04/2020 12:48

MIL's inability to follow basic instructions...some people

OP I think is where you're going a bit iffy with your MIL. Can you have a reasonable conversation with her (you may have to do this several million times - I did) rather than issuing her with instructions? Do you see how that sounds when you read it back?

Fruitsaladjelly · 12/04/2020 12:48

@LoveIsLovely I think I had 10 eggs as a kid but given by a number of friends and family so it’s not the excess of the number as much as the fact that the OP clearly has boundaries in place about such things and mil just ignores these and people are criticising the Op for maintaining those consistent rules and boundaries for her kids. Bonkers! My 10 eggs didn’t do me any good btw. I was allowed far too much sugar as a child and am suffering the consequences as an adult.

Wannabangbang · 12/04/2020 12:48

Also maybe give a few to some neighbours who might not have and egg at this time, will cheer them up no end just leave on doorstep, ring on the bell and run x

RedHelenB · 12/04/2020 12:49

Why not have the OP.support her husband and children's father on this, the eggs were from him mum.

You are totally being unreasonable OP, they are for your children
If it were me I'd say how kind Granny is but maybe point out how much chocolate it is and that some kids might not be so lucky and would they like to share with them via the food bank. 1 is just stingy though to keep

nellythenarwhal · 12/04/2020 12:49

One of the kids is a toddler? Even more crazy that there's 10 medium/large eggs per child then. It's sad that she has to express how much she misses them by buying mountains of chocolate. I hope none of the other grandparents try to outdo her and go for even more than that next year.

TimeAintNothing · 12/04/2020 12:51

Neither me or by brother have been fat, we are both 40’s and don’t have any fillings either and we ate a fuckton of eggs as children. I’ve had 1.5 myself today. It’s not crack!

Same except I've only had one egg today and I'm not quite 40 yet.

You can have lots of eggs and still show moderation in how you eat them. My DC get a free pass today then the eggs will go on top of the fridge and will be rationed out, used for cakes, etc.

They have three eggs each from DH and I plus a small toy and various stickers/bubbles/pencils/seed packets, etc that we hid instead if an egg hunt because I couldn't get any of the small egg hunt eggs. Their auntie left a bag on the doorstep with two eggs each, so did FIL, and so did their uncle, FIL also left some Playdoh. The village social club arent having their annual egg hunt for the children but already had the eggs so they've been delivering them to the children of members and they have one each from there. My parents have said my mother is dropping a bag on the doorstep on her way home from work and that the DC have two eggs each plus as outfit (that I know my mam bought several weeks ago because I was there) and some craft things to keep them busy during lockdown.

Shockingly none of them are obese and none of them will eat all of those eggs in one go. They had one each for breakfast and we're watching a film later so they'll probably have another then. The test go away and they'll get a piece here and there or they'll get used for baking.

CeibaTree · 12/04/2020 12:51

all because of his MIL's inability to follow basic instructions
Each update you sound more and more controlling. Your DC are your mother-in-law's grandchildren - and if your husband isn't bothered about his mum's gifts to them then why are you..some people indeed!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/04/2020 12:51

Would the kids find playing Easter Bunny fun and give out the extra eggs on neighbours doorsteps? Smile

decisionsdecision · 12/04/2020 12:53

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe we use them as flowerpots or as water pots for paint

Notcoolmum · 12/04/2020 12:53

To be annoyed isn't unreasonable. To unilaterally make a decision that upset your husband in the process is. You are jointly responsible for making parenting decisions. And his mum bought the eggs I'd say it was his decision on how to respond to it.

TellLucyILoveHer · 12/04/2020 12:53

Haha this thread is so mad.

Yeah, 10 eggs each is absurd.

No, it's not theft to take something from your own young kids that's not good for them. It's called parenting.

Yes, a grandma can still be fun even if she doesn't give Easter eggs. Easter wasn't a big thing for my family, we each got one from our parents and that was it. None from extended family. Never bothered me in the slightest. I was happy with one.

Buying 10 eggs is strange, just as buying them each 10 Christmas presents would be. Presumably compensating for something?

Confuddledtown · 12/04/2020 12:53

Where on earth do you store 30 massive Easter eggs??

Quicklittlenamechange · 12/04/2020 12:53

*Is no one parenting anymore?"

It's shocking, honestly. The kids seem to rule the roost. Hell would have frozen over before I was allowed 10 easter eggs. No wonder there are so many entitled twats in the world.*
Totally agree with this.
Its awful behaviour because it sets up discontent -nothing is ever enough for DC who are over indulged like this.
Stand firm OP

DoTheNextRightThing · 12/04/2020 12:55

Bloody hell! I'm all for allowing kids to have treats, but that's just wild 😨 YANBU although she has obviously spent a lot on this, so I wouldn't like to seem too ungrateful.

garlicbread82 · 12/04/2020 12:55

@nellythenarwhal I am glad you see my point! 10 eggs for each child is simply grotesque, no doubt about it. DC1 is 2.5, DC2 is 6, and DC3 is 10. I hope this makes it clear how MIL's "generous" behaviour is purely unacceptable. Hmm

OP posts:
LittleCabbage · 12/04/2020 12:58

Ten eggs per child IS obscene. Yes, they can be rationed out, but if they end up lasting around 3 months, then they are no longer part of Easter, and the excitement of Easter is lost.

Also, a GP buying far more than the parents do, IS undermining the parents - she is trying to make herself the "favourite" adult and make the parents' gifts look pathetic in comparison.

I would definitely give away any eggs that took the amount she is giving to over the amount DH and I were giving.

phoenixrosehere · 12/04/2020 12:58

10 large chocolate eggs for a 2.5 yo. Shock

VeganVeal · 12/04/2020 12:59

@Megan2018 So long as your brother and you aren't fat thats fine then, I was worried about for a while.

Anyway feed your kids loads of chocolate apparently it doesnt make them fat, must be all the salad

BillieEilish · 12/04/2020 13:00

It's Easter Sunday OP go and be with and be nnice to your family.

Do not cause drama.

I do not believe anything you are saying about 10 large eggs each FWIW.

You just seem bored and this is in bad taste in such a difficult/hardship time for families. You know it.

You don't want a happy weekend for your DC's or your DH. Nope.

OhCaptain · 12/04/2020 13:01

In fairness you don’t know how “massive” these eggs are.

The ones in mugs wouldn’t be anyway.

Cheesepleas3 · 12/04/2020 13:01

I don't understand why you're so up in arms about your MIL "undermining" you, yet it's OK for you to do exactly that to your husband. He's as much their parent as you are, so shouldn't he be entitled to a say too?
TBH you just seem like a miserable cow, and the ones that are really going to suffer as a result is your kids. Also totally agree with PP who say it seems you're just wanting a pat on the back for saying you're taking them to food bank more than anything else Hmm

decisionsdecision · 12/04/2020 13:02

I'm confused as to why people think as they got 10 eggs they must eat them all today. Surely you can split them to last weeks if not months?
Having 1/2 or 1/4 of an egg a day will not cause shit. You all need to calm down.
OP are you really saying you have to give the eggs away or they would eat al 10 in one day. Maybe work on your parenting if you feel that is the case.
As I said melt them and make cakes, give 1/4 or 1/5 a day I don't get what is so bloody difficult

CeibaTree · 12/04/2020 13:02

I am glad you see my point! 10 eggs for each child is simply grotesque, no doubt about it

I think everyone sees your point OP - it's your reaction and your disdain towards your MiL that people are questioning. You've had lots of suggestions on this thread - space them out over the year, give them away, use them in baking etc. Honestly if your children's grandmother overindulging them is the worst thing she does then you are very lucky. You are the parent so just don't give them to your DC to eat in one go, and just chill out a bit. I would have gone off in a huff like your DH has done too - you seem to be making a lot of fuss over a real non-situation.

Matildathehun77 · 12/04/2020 13:03

*"Is no one parenting anymore?"

Yes @LoveIsLovely you and you alone are the only decent parent left in the world. Every other parent is busy gorging their kids on 10 large Easter eggs in a morning and turning them into "entitled twats" Hmm

Maybe get down off your high horse and try to understand what's happening.

My grandma used to buy all 4 grandchildren tons and tons of presents, chocolate etc. My parents rolled their eyes but let it happen because they understood that when her own kids were babies she couldn't spoil them because she had no money and (during and just after WW2) there was little available to buy.

All four of us have turned out to be decent, hard working, normal people..... no twats. It can be done Grin
