I've started giving to both shelter and guardian as I feel so lucky to still have a good income and they both do such good work. I feel like I should be giving more though

The local animal shelter as they were low on food and kitten milk, we’ve always supported them anyway but I know they are small and will struggle without extra help.

DesignedForLife · 11/04/2020 19:20

None. Was I meant to? I have no income since the virus won’t let me work.

Talulahoopla · 11/04/2020 19:21

Alzheimer Scotland. They helped us a lot when my dad had FTD and can't imagine how my mum would have coped with during lockdown if he was still here. All their resource centres are closed and they're still trying to provide the usual care and support to the service users and their family. I'm regularly in touch with them and it's such a struggle right now (as I'm sure it is for loads of charities). None of their frontline staff have ppe and they're spending days trying to locate things like hand sanitiser, aprons, gloves etc so staff and volunteers can safely continue to visit people at their homes. Charities rely on fundraising but that's almost impossible now with most businesses being closed. Really heartbreaking. I've been told just liking and sharing a charity's posts on social media is a massive help to raise awareness 🙏🤞

GlummyMcGlummerson · 11/04/2020 19:21

None. I'm probably gonna lose my job because of COVID and need to save every penny I can get

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 11/04/2020 19:22

The local Action Against Homelessness and The Trussell Trust

trinity0097 · 11/04/2020 19:23

Challengers - they are £150k short as people have paused their fundraising which involved being with people.

CraftyGin · 11/04/2020 19:23

Haven't changed anything.

Mostly, my local church and Christians Against Poverty.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 11/04/2020 19:24

The refugees women's project in Calais, towards PPE, Women's Aid.

There's so many people that need help right now, it's really hard to ignore, but realistically I don't know how much longer I'll be in work, so keeping it small.

FizzAfterSix · 11/04/2020 19:26

Animal ones. Also supporting friends in Greece and Romania who are struggling to feed dogs in lockdown.

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 19:27

Foobank

Guardian (their journalists are working very hard to pull the news together)

I'm also keeping all my stuff I am gradually clearing and will do a. massive charity shop drop

Trying to support some local small businesses that are still open too

KoalasandRabbit · 11/04/2020 19:28

We're losing quite a lot of money so not got much spare atm but are donating fruit and vegetables to the animals at our local wildlife centre which supports lots of wildlife rescue projects around the world.

JKScot4 · 11/04/2020 19:30

@nahowe
I volunteer at my local foodbank and at present we don’t have the donations from supermarket points and have had donations from a few local businesses, cash donations are very welcome as we’ve had specific requests for baby milk, nappies, toiletries and these are not items anyone donates 😕
Can I also say to people to research who you donate to, Red Cross, Dogs Trust etc pay huge salaries, look into small local charities; those are the ones who need help the most.

Hoggleludo · 11/04/2020 19:32

I work for 3 homeless shelters. Volunteer. I love it.

Thank you for giving to shelter etc. This is such a hard time for them normally. This has just hit honeless bad. They don't usually have any drs. Most are very reluctant to go to a hospital

It's kicking them when they are at their worst as it is. So thank you.

MaudesMum · 11/04/2020 19:37

My local food bank - I set up a direct debit for them which will carry on after this shitstorm is over. I am trying to get as much food as possible from local suppliers and if I need to get stuff online either for me or for others as presents I am looking at local suppliers as far as possible - so, for example, I found a wine supplier near where a friend lived for her birthday present.

jackparlabane · 11/04/2020 20:40

Have added a DD to Shelter which I'd been meaning to do for ages and not got round to (would help if their website worked with the out of date browsers at work...)

Local supermarket collect for local homeless and vulnerable people so I've put food in there, more than usual as in the shop less often.

Sparklesocks · 11/04/2020 20:43

Ignore posters like @Thingscanonlygetwetter - some people think being snarky is somehow witty or clever.

Yes agreed with local food banks and DV shelters.

workshyfop · 11/04/2020 20:58

Refuge. And a local animal shelter.

RippleEffects · 11/04/2020 21:05

The big issue, as someone who is self employed and found my feet after being in poverty i have enormous respect for big issue sellers. It's an amazing concept and gives individuals the opportunity to have self respect. Big issue sellers are the ultimate micro business' where they buy at one price sell at cover price and have to decide what money they need to keep and what to reinvest in more copies. The sellers now cant sell, and dont fall into the self employment schemes. Having already picked themselves up to find a way forwards I hope that they can keep mentally strong enough to pick them selves up once more when they can sell again.

The local food bank as they've been undersupported historically but they are doing a fair bit better at present

A local mental health charity that works with supervising young people doing gardening and basic woodworking tasks providing family respite and giving young people pride in the things they can do rather than those they can't. They also refurbish and sell second hand bikes.

cologne4711 · 11/04/2020 21:13

I donated to a local charity who have lots of projects in the area, mainly for young people, but they can't currently run those so are now helping out the food bank locally.

Currently I donate to the Migraine Trust and parkrun. I change my charities round every so often, eg I've also sponsored a room at Centrepoint and I donated to Parkinsons UK for a while.

Sinuhe · 11/04/2020 21:15

Local hospice charity, they are directly supporting the NHS with beds and care for other, terminally ill patients.

MogeatDog · 11/04/2020 21:19

We've given to a food bank fund and to Thank you mr potato - to provide meals to nhs staff.

Viviennemary · 11/04/2020 21:22

I don't give to larger charities since I read about the salaries their directors are on. I still give stuff to their shops but not cash. Only cash to local hospices.

PristineCondition · 11/04/2020 21:22

@RippleEffects
Sainsburys Mcolls and a few other shops are selling Big Issues instore until it is safe for the sellers to be out again, hopefully people will buy and the money used to help the sellers

VeganVeal · 11/04/2020 21:28

Those poor women my husband watches on the net, the poor ladies dont have a stitch to wear, he feels so sorry for them

Fiddlersgreen · 11/04/2020 21:32

As I’m not commuting, I have been donating what I would usually spend on transport on a weekly basis.
So far I have donated to:
My local children’s hospice
Refuge
Teenage Cancer Trust
