I've started giving to both shelter and guardian as I feel so lucky to still have a good income and they both do such good work. I feel like I should be giving more though

Animal ones.

Grace763 · 11/04/2020 18:26

Red Cross and Food banks.

myself2020 · 11/04/2020 18:29

the one associated with our local hospital - they buy stuff needed in the moment. and our foodbank

nahowe · 11/04/2020 18:31

Is it better to give cash to a foodbank or donate at the supermarket? I do the latter as thought it would be easier and more direct?

Please don't forget your small local charities. They don't have the luxury if millions in reserves, and a lot are reliant on funding from projects, and obviously few projects are running now

Thingscanonlygetwetter · 11/04/2020 18:39

Don’t forget to give yourself a pat on the back while you’re at it

Kay1341 · 11/04/2020 18:40

I donated to a local homeless street support (there's increased demand when usual sources for food and cash aren't available due to lockdown) and animal shelter running low on food (no adoptions during lockdown either).

what does that mean?

The poster thinks you are showing off and looking for praise because of an ancient law that one must never ever mention giving to charity

This does make it difficult if you actually want to ask what charities are most in need/delivering most to people in need

Ginfordinner · 11/04/2020 18:46

Food banks

FinallyHere · 11/04/2020 18:47

Usually support

https://www.asn.org.uk and our local food back. Added some brilliant causes on patreon.com and these brilliant people:

I’m not giving anything apart from extra hours as I work for a small local charity
We as are many others struggling - lots more people in need - less donations and having to spend more on remote working and equipment
2 of our local hospices are struggling as they rely on income from their shops (closed) lotteries and raffles plus other donations (going down rapidly)

RoseAndRose · 11/04/2020 18:52

Food Bank

Intensive Care Society - are we allowed to link fundraising pages of bona fide charities?

Supersimkin2 · 11/04/2020 18:56

I've stopped giving to the Salvation Army. Our local branch slammed the door shut (literally) on the community and have failed to help locals in lockdown.

nahowe · 11/04/2020 18:56

Is this their site? www.ics.ac.uk/

Looks very well deserving at the moment

Regarding charities “reserves” which charities sensibly try to hold.. I am afraid that because they are invested, they are currently not really worth anything because of the state of the stock markets.

So sadly all charities are in trouble right now.

Give to charities that you care about. But remember that sadly big charities aren’t protected right now either, despite their reserves.

Asthma UK

Thanks for the link, really appreciate it and they seem to really be in need hadn't crossed my mind

That’s not what you asked though.

oatlyexhausted · 11/04/2020 19:07

Local palliative care hospice.

They provide a complementary service to the NHS, and are therefore helping the NHS focus on other things.

AgentProvocateur · 11/04/2020 19:08

Food bank and women’s aid.

GivenchyDahhling · 11/04/2020 19:11

Ronald McDonald house. Whenever I used to pop in for a coffee (and the occasionally egg McMuffin..) and used the self service machine I would always round up as I think it’s an incredible charity that most people don’t even think of as being necessary until they need it. I’ve set up a regular donation.

I also already donate to the Lullaby Trust through direct debit. Such an important charity.
