I’m disgusted with Mr Hancock and our Govt.’s stance on there being no “likely” direct link to COVID19 deaths and lack of PPE.

They’re clearly shitting themselves at the prospect of having NOT shifted themselves soon and reacted by trying to get the equipment necessary to protect those in the frontline. As a retired nurse I’m f***g furious on my colleagues behalf.

Typical Tory “run away!” reaction.

AIBU to think that when this is over, political heads should roll? That under no circumstances should the “heroes” of this debacle, end up sitting in the Lords?

Might be ok, but how is it relevant? don't know, Matt Hancock mentioned it and people were angry thst he had. I was pointing out that yes people do often use it incorrectly.

Tonyaster · 12/04/2020 12:47

The staff that have none or bare minimum, won't get infected because the gloves were put on/taken off wrong

They most definitely could get infected because of this!

EffieIsATrinket · 12/04/2020 13:13

Good to know when NHS staff die there will be victim-blaming and comments that they probably didn't follow the rules rather than just sympathy or respect for their sacrifice.

Next we'll be saying some of our soldiers in the ME died from meteorite strikes and it was just one of those things.

Tonyaster · 12/04/2020 13:57

Well, as a designer of PPE, I'd prefer to face the fact that people under stress don't always use it correctly, which could harm them. Then we can try and take that into account where we can. It does noone any good to pretend everyone knows how to use PPE correctly and best not to offend by suggesting some don't.

Poppinjay · 12/04/2020 13:58

They most definitely could get infected because of this!

Not if they don't have it.

Tonyaster · 12/04/2020 13:59

That's a pretty convoluted argument Confused

TheLadyAnneNeville · 12/04/2020 14:22

@Tonyaster. Thanks for your insight. What comes across is that the people who need it also require thorough training in correct use. Let’s hope this is brought into training as routine, some time soon.

I saw a lady with blue gloves on in Aldi yesterday. She was touching everything and then on and off with her glasses and rubbing her eyes. With the blue gloves on.

I saw a lady with blue gloves on in Aldi yesterday. She was touching everything and then on and off with her glasses and rubbing her eyes. With the blue gloves on I've seen similar. The best thing I've seen is a woman in the supermarket queue with a mask, slipping the mask onto the top of her head so she could cough Confused

Bargebill19 · 12/04/2020 15:11

We didn’t get training. We had to use YouTube to work out how to put on the surgical masks. No one told us how long they should be used for. Management just said at least a week. Longer if possible.
The ambulance crews told us they were only good for four hours.

lyralalala · 12/04/2020 15:14

Matt Hancock mentioned it and people were angry thst he had. I was pointing out that yes people do often use it incorrectly

I didn’t think he was suggesting that people were using it incorrectly in that they weren’t putting it on right, but more in suggestion people who didn’t need it were using it and people were changing it too often and therefore blocking other people from using it by wasting it?

Bargebill19 · 12/04/2020 15:14

When people are honest, no matter how horrible the truth, people will often accept it and dig deeper to pull together and get through it.
It’s the blatant lies that destroy people’s resolve to power in through. You know you are going to be thrown under the proverbial bus, but it’s nice to be able to see it coming first.

TudorRoses · 12/04/2020 16:54

Maybe buying it 3 months ago would have been good?

Well, @Aderyn19 (as people have already pointed out until they are blue in the face) there were already shortages by then because the Chinese make most of it, and they stopped sending it to us before we even knew Coronavirus existed.

Aderyn19 · 12/04/2020 17:14

But there were other UK based organisations offering alternatives to the standard products we usually buy.

The govt had reports on a potential pandemic situation as early as 2017, yet did nothing to prepare.

Aderyn19 · 12/04/2020 17:17

And if the govt truly couldn't buy what we needed, why did they let life carry on as normal for so long, when it was apparent to them that the health services would be fucked if too many people got sick? Why not shut down earlier? I don't understand their thinking. We out to have closed down borders and schools, stopped sporting events and closed bars back when Ireland (or even Italy) were doing so.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 12/04/2020 17:24

Aren’t you seething? I am. But then I spend 3 decades working the NHS.

Yes I am seething, OP. I have a family member currently working in a critical unit and wearing DIY plastic covering in lieu of proper PPE. I'm terrified for her. The Government have majorly screwed this up and anyone who says 'we shouldn't politicise this' can go fuck themselves.

Saucepanlid · 12/04/2020 18:06

Nurse here . I think I became truly angry when Priti Patel apologised in case people "feel" there has been a failure to provide PPE . No I don't " feel" that . I feel exhausted , I feel frightened ,I feel worried about colleagues and family who are vulnerable . I am close to the age of being vulnerable because I am elderly . I don't think I'll make it to retirement . I do not work in ICU but in a close environment with risky mentally ill patients. That comment really hurt . As if we are being precious and unreasonable . Sit in your office with your smart dress and perfect make up and sneer at the cannon fodder . Sorry , I'm tired , hot , too hungry to sleep . Too tired to eat . Shower and a cup of tea I think ... and do it all again tomorrow. Good luck and best wishes . Lost in admiration for the front line staff .

Poppinjay · 12/04/2020 20:31

If the government was aware of a shortage of PPE in January, the decision not to lock down earlier was even more irresponsible than it at first appeared. Who would decide to allow thousands of people to contract the virus unnecessarily, knowing that your NHS didn't have the resources to keep themselves safe.

Furthermore, who would make the decision to allow more people then necessary to contract the virus, knowing that they wouldn't have sufficient ventilators and, even after implementing that decision, still not pull out all the stops to aquire more?

Whatever way you chose to present it, this government has been reckless, prioritising their political well-being over the lives of those they purport to represent. They are now doing everything they can to shift the blame for their ineptitude onto their victims.

Tonyaster · 12/04/2020 20:32

They do have sufficient ventilators.

Poppinjay · 12/04/2020 20:36

They do have sufficient ventilators.

It seems very unlikely that this will continue to be the case.

Tonyaster · 12/04/2020 20:41

Poppinjay hopefully it will. Apparently London hospital admissions are dropping.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 12/04/2020 20:45

@BatleyTownswomensGuild... spoken with true Yorkshire plain talking! You are correct of course.

I think in terms of shutting down, they were hoping it was going to be a “normal” flu ie. you get it...you pass it...you have two days off work ...you get better.
