I’m disgusted with Mr Hancock and our Govt.’s stance on there being no “likely” direct link to COVID19 deaths and lack of PPE.

They’re clearly shitting themselves at the prospect of having NOT shifted themselves soon and reacted by trying to get the equipment necessary to protect those in the frontline. As a retired nurse I’m f***g furious on my colleagues behalf.

Typical Tory “run away!” reaction.

AIBU to think that when this is over, political heads should roll? That under no circumstances should the “heroes” of this debacle, end up sitting in the Lords?

I don't think any American companies would touch the NHS with a bargepole

TheLadyAnneNeville · 11/04/2020 20:56

@Tonyaster but we were cut to the bone in terms of the country’s services, before all this started. Johnson promised more nurses (even though the sums didn’t add up) and more hospitals and more police on the streets and ...

I agree (to a degree) about “we aren’t the only ones who weren’t prepared” but honestly, promising the necessary equipment and each week it not arriving. And then this “no link” statement is just the icing on the cake.

There are massive logistical issues with providing PPE i doubt they are lying about it being delayed.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 11/04/2020 21:03

Delayed? We could all see the delay at the 5pm press briefings. All those “by the end of the week/month etc. My bug bear is the fact they’re trying to say there’s no link between lack of PPE and deaths. That, is my problem. It’s Trumpish. Wash your hands of responsibility and walk away quickly.

Is there a link?

TheLadyAnneNeville · 11/04/2020 21:11

@Tonyaster... can you not see that viral overload happens when people are working at close quarters with a respiratory viral infection day in, day out that it might. just. increase. your susceptibility to contracting it yourself? Does that make any sense to you? Why are we social distancing? To lessen the possibility of becoming infected.

Makes sense to me.

Yes, if viral load is a proven thing. Are there links?

TheLadyAnneNeville · 11/04/2020 21:15

Then why are we social distancing? Why is the country shut down. Globally, the human race, is shut down. To lessen the possibility of repeated exposure?

No government would have been able to buy the amount of PPE needed in time.

The government is turning down offers of PPE on the basis they have enough

I know of a company who offered to make face visors and basically said “we have the kit and supplies, where would we send them too” and received a generic email saying “Thank you for your email, we’ve received 3000 communications regarding ventilators. We’ll be in touch if your assistance is required”.

They are UK and Norwegian company and has offered the same to the Norwegian government. The first boxes of visors were shipped off to Norway last week.

The ones still in the UK were donated to some nurses and care homes via a Facebook “Does anyone need?” type post

TheLadyAnneNeville · 11/04/2020 21:18

To lessen the viral load. The more contact, at close quarters (2m is recommended in daily life) the more likely you are to become infected. Drs and nurses are at intimately close quarters.

Imagine if we said no PPE no care, can you imagine the backlash. We would not expect a roofer to access a roof on foot, it is not much different.

The Tory's have year on year underfunded and dismantled the NHS they have had warning about potential pandemic and should have ensured we could at least be prepared initially.

As a frontline nurse I am scared to go to work, I don't sleep and am worried about leaving my children without a mother. As a senior NHS nurse this is not what I signed up for but, I will continue to do my best and hope it does not kill me. We do not have enough PPE but there it is, what can we do? Provide care or leave people to suffer and die and risk our lives. you choose. The Tory's have.

The insult that is our health leader suggesting we use PPE inappropriately don't worry Matt I have attended to many without PPE should have saved you some cash, and to say he would look into whether the health professionals died due to exposure at work or in the general population is saddening.

I would never encourage my dc to choose my career. Pretty sure the recruitment after this will be even more difficult.

SeaWitchly · 11/04/2020 21:21

Totally agree with you OP. And you are allowed to be angry about the government failings (as we all should be). Then some numpties pop up on social media wanting us all ‘Clap for Boris’ ... Hmm

TheLadyAnneNeville · 11/04/2020 21:22

@lyralalala... I rest my case. Disgraceful.

@TheLadyAnneNeville They've found it incredibly frustrating

You would think they'd at least suggest that smaller donations (they're making around 500 visors a week that could stay here) should be targeted at care homes or home helps or whatever. Rather than "Thanks, but no thanks"

Someone spotted an appeal by a local authority in Scotland on FB for assistance for gloves and masks so I think they're trying to aim there

Tonyaster · 11/04/2020 21:31

I don't disagree that the process of buying PPE is long and overly complicated. We have to go through a huge amount of testing and certification. It makes quick reactions very difficult.

VeganVeal · 11/04/2020 21:32

I pay my dues in NI, I dont begrudge it, happy to pay more, I can easily afford it, but I also dont see why I have to go outside and bang a pan with a wooden spoon.

VeganVeal · 11/04/2020 21:34

Its the poor kiddies I feel sorry for, we should all clap them, poor darlings

TheLadyAnneNeville · 11/04/2020 21:35

@Rupertpenrysmistress. This negates every single thing I have written, on this 6 page thread. Thank you.

I don't think anyone feels genuinely aggrieved by those members of the public who are clapping for the NHS every Thursday. It's an anger towards the members of this government when they are shown clapping for the NHS whilst, today according to Piri Patel, being 'sorry if people feel that way' about the lack of PPE and deaths of the frontline staff. That is a disgrace and outrage and so so unacceptable, To fathom that that they can even show their faces to applaud the people they have let down so catastrophically.

For Matt Hancock to also say that NHS workers need to use the PPE they do have correctly and carefully, implying they somehow don't appreciate what they do have, must have been particularly hard for NHS staff to hear.

Disgusting.

biscuiteer · 11/04/2020 21:41

Priti

lyralalala · 11/04/2020 21:43

I think the thing as well is that Hancock saying "Look, there's a global pandemic, PPE is in short supply and we are doing everything we can to obtain as much as possible"

People would still have said "they should have planned" because they should have planned, but at the moment he's outright lying because he keeps saying "We have plenty" when it's blatantly obvious that we don't.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 11/04/2020 21:48

@Lyralalala he has to say that. If they ever admitted people were dying because of lack of PPE, imagine the cost in £££ and votes.
