If you have cabbage with your roast dinners, how do you cook it?

I never cook cabbage with roast dinners but suddenly had a craving for it.

But I only remember my Nan's cabbage which was probably boiled and in gravy that had been made with lard...and dripping or whatever 1940s people made their spectacular gravy out of!

An old shoe would have tasted nice with my Nan's gravy on it.

How do you cook your cabbage please?

I usually cook mine in the steamer like all veg.

Depends if your cooking red cabbage or white?

dementedpixie · 11/04/2020 12:27

Think dh steams white cabbage. Add salt and pepper and its ready

FortunesFave · 11/04/2020 12:30

White cabbage...I don't like the idea of steaming. It sounds boring...is it? Or is it nice?

White cabbage , sliced , in the steamer.

I have never cooked braised red cabbage but I do buy it , it's delicious .

iklboo · 11/04/2020 12:30

Steam chopped white cabbage. Served with a knob of butter and salt & pepper stirred through it.

InOtterNews · 11/04/2020 12:30

It depends on the type of cabbage. For example, savoy would be finely shredded, stir-fried with caraway seeds. Spring greens steam for 5 minutes - lots of black pepper and butter (all cabbage can be improved with pepper and butter Grin)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/04/2020 12:31

You need to keep a bit of crunch with cabbage , so steaming is the easiest not to overcook.

You can sprinkle it with chopped up old shoe if you like though Wink

Another steamer here.

Love it! Steamed Savoy cabbage, lots of pepper.

sulkysukey · 11/04/2020 12:32

Savoy (the crinkly one) sliced as finely as you can, cover with water and a big bit of butter - boil the water off so it ends up frying in the butter once cooked and wilted mmmmm

FortunesFave · 11/04/2020 12:32

Ok how long should I steam it for? Please :D

I always add some sliced leeks to my cabbage. Boil for 4 mins then add butter and black pepper.

Tadghthepup · 11/04/2020 12:33

Finely shred spring greens or a sweetheart cabbage. Remove any thick veins first.
In a large pan bring about an inch depth of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the cabbage and a large nob of butter. Put the lid on and continue to vigorously boil for about 3 minutes.
Strain and serve immediately.

possumgoddess · 11/04/2020 12:33

I cook sweetheart cabbage. Shred finely, cover with boiling water, bring back to the boil and then drain. No need to cook for any longer than that! It is also lovely slightly tried with bacon and garlic, but a bit much for Sunday dinner for me.

listsandbudgets · 11/04/2020 12:34

Very slowly overlow heat with a big knob of butter and ( if we are having pork) chopped up apple.

FortunesFave · 11/04/2020 12:35

Oh I'm definitely using butter...maybe my Nan did that? It all sound gorgeous thanks everyone! You've all reminded me of the joy of cabbage!

Wilted cabbage with garlic. Or red with pears or cranberries ♥️

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 11/04/2020 12:36

I also love white cabbage fried with some tomatoes and a bit of bacon.

Zombiemum1946 · 11/04/2020 12:37

Fry it till crispy in bacon/chorizo fat then mix through with the bacon/chorizo. Don't over fill the frying pan or it will steam and go soggy, want it crispy. Enjoy.

Noodlenosefraggle · 11/04/2020 12:39

My kids love boiled cabbage just plain with a bit of salt! Fried, spiced, Savoy, sweetheart all of them are greeted with 'why cant we just have normal cabbage?'

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 11/04/2020 12:39

Cook it?
Nah. Shred and eat!

Zombiemum1946 · 11/04/2020 12:39

I meant to say shred or chop the cabbage finely.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 11/04/2020 12:41

I like green cabbage or kale. Chopped up and fried with either soy sauce or worstershire sauce.

Anamechangewpukddoyougood · 11/04/2020 12:44

Another vote for stir fry with bacon! Delicious

wowfudge · 11/04/2020 12:44

Tadght's method is the one I use. I shred all types of cabbage before cooking. It's also nice stir fried with onion and bacon pieces.

Baconking · 11/04/2020 12:44

Steam it, then fry saute in butter for a few minutes
