If you have cabbage with your roast dinners, how do you cook it?

I never cook cabbage with roast dinners but suddenly had a craving for it.

But I only remember my Nan's cabbage which was probably boiled and in gravy that had been made with lard...and dripping or whatever 1940s people made their spectacular gravy out of!

An old shoe would have tasted nice with my Nan's gravy on it.

How do you cook your cabbage please?

red cabbage - slow braised for hours with apple, onion, red wine vinegar
savoy - shredded, quickly coat with butter in the frying pan and then add enough bouillon to steam it a bit.

FrenchyQ · 11/04/2020 12:46

Shred and stir fry with a knob of garlic butter

DefConOne · 11/04/2020 12:47

Braised with onion sometimes caraway seeds as well.

Appiandterri · 11/04/2020 12:54

Savoy cabbage, a light sauté in olive oil, lots of black pepper

White cabbage boiled then drained and a knob of butter stirred in.

I would love someone to cook me a roast dinner right now.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/04/2020 12:55

Finely shredded, cooked in as little water as possible, drained and then a good knob of real butter and lots of pepper.

Longdistance · 11/04/2020 12:59

Olive oil in the pan, add your cabbage and fry off. Add cracked black pepper. My mil and fil love it with my roasts. You can also do this with leek added.

White cabbage fried in bacon fat, possibly with onion is the food of the gods.

FutureDays · 11/04/2020 13:12

I tend to do red cabbage as I'm not a fan of white or savory.

I chop an onion and cook in a pan for a few mins. Then add sliced red cabbage, a tbsp water and put a lid on it, after a few mins I then add a tbsp vinegar, tbsp sugar and another tbsp water if I think it needs it, then stir it & put the lid on it, after another 5mins I add sliced bramley apple (usually half, depends on the size of it) cook on high for a couple of mins then stir and put the lid back on.
I then cook it at a low heat until it's done.
I usually cook it in our wok as it's our biggest pan with a lid.

ButterbuttSquash · 11/04/2020 14:25

Savoy, stir fried in butter.

OnlyaMan · 11/04/2020 19:55

Cabbage! Same as Brussels Sprouts. Cook them slowly and carefully in whatever means seems good to you, and then throw them out.
It is an insult to serve them to normal people.

wowfudge · 11/04/2020 20:13

I do braised red cabbage in the Instant Pot - takes minutes. Brussels are only worth eating if small imho.

AmelieTaylor · 11/04/2020 20:18

Finely sliced, in a vey hot pan with butter & proper. Just stir until it's done (couple of minutes). You'll never eat it any other way again.

smeerf · 11/04/2020 20:20

Braised with bacon - I use this Jamie recipe

HelloTerrance · 11/04/2020 20:25

Fried in butter with diced chorizo. It's the best way. Same with sprouts.

CSIblonde · 11/04/2020 22:10

White cabbage strips fried in butter is the food of the Gods. Normal cabbage, my Nan just boiled for v short while, (chopped finely) then served smothered in butter too. (with mashed carrot & swede)

theschoolonthehill · 11/04/2020 22:13

Finely shredded, cooked in as little water as possible, drained and then a good knob of real butter and lots of pepper.

I cook it like that but with chopped garlic too.

I don’t think I could eat it without garlic tbh.

bettybattenburg · 11/04/2020 22:14

Fry it with some mustard seed.

Sarahlou63 · 11/04/2020 22:16

@bettybattenburg - you beat me to by seconds!!

msmith501 · 11/04/2020 22:18

Thinly slice and steam for 8 mins ish. Lightly toss in a knob of butter. Delicious and just on the right side of crisp.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 11/04/2020 22:20

Shred white cabbage and an onion. Melt some butter and stir fry the shredded onion and cabbage, taking care not to colour it. Add approx 300ml of chicken stock and plenty of black pepper. Heat, cover the summer gently until the cabbage is cooked. It's delicious.

I just use stock from a stock cube.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 11/04/2020 22:21

Cover them simmer!!!

Barbararara · 11/04/2020 22:22

Cut finely, in the wok with a few spoonfuls of water and a generous knob of butter. Turn heat to high and boil off the water and stir fry in the butter. Only takes a few minutes. Season well.

But if you’re having bacon and cabbage, the cabbage should be cooked in the bacon water.

bettybattenburg · 11/04/2020 22:24

@Sarahlou63 Great minds think alike.

ScorpionQueen · 11/04/2020 22:25

Steamed with leeks and tossed with butter and black pepper.

LionessRoar · 11/04/2020 23:02

Savoy cabbage cut into wedges and browned in a pan. Add stock and braise. Lovely!
