To be worried? Siatica or DVT

AvocadoPrime · 10/04/2020 17:48

Sorry, posting for traffic so maybe BU for that. I have pain in my calf it seems to move from my ankle to my groin and sometimes in my butt and thigh mostly in my calf though. I have lower back pain but not very often and so my doctor said it was siatica. This was around a week ago and obviously this was a phone appointment. The pain seemed to disappear for a couple of days and is now back with a vengeance. I'm quite anxious about health and really worried it's a DVT. I have no swelling or redness. Fully prepared to be told to get a grip. Obviously dont want to waste a health professionals time in the current circumstances. Anyone that's had siatica think my symptoms sound familiar?

I’m have the same thing at the moment. I work for the nhs and have a logical brain but still can’t help thinking but what if it’s a dvt. Pretty sure it’s just sciatica though. I haven’t spoken to anyone about it.

AvocadoPrime · 10/04/2020 18:04

I'm sorry you are experiencing it too. Its worrying when you aren't sure. From what I've read online (which is alot) the symptoms can be similar. The no redness ect is reassuring but if these were normal times I would want to have it checked Flowers

I’ve had several dvts which have ended up as pulmonary embolisms. I’ve never once had swollen, red or hot to the touch legs. Contact 111. It’s really not worth the risk.

AvocadoPrime · 10/04/2020 19:49

@sn0tnose do you mind me asking what the pain was like? I've got it in my butt cheek and behind knee at the moment which makes me think it's my back.

I have sciatica on and off. I never would have suspected dvt tbh. I feel what i have is quite clearly linked to having done recent exercise. And my lower back is weak from three pregnancies and sciatica runs in my family. Do any of those ring true for you? You can call 111, but i suspect if you don't have classic dvt symptoms you're unlikely to be told to go to a & e at the moment.

Heygirlheyboy · 10/04/2020 20:00

Butt cheek would make me think sciatica but definitely make a call at least. My sister was wrongly diagnosed with sciatica, in person tho GP didn't actually check leg Hmm but it was dvt.

Dita73 · 10/04/2020 20:02

How long have you had the pain? Two weeks ago I was in agony with the worst nauseating pain. It was on one side of my bum and down the back of my thigh. I’ve never had back problems or anything. My daughter said it was sciatica. A few days later I had weird lumps over the back of my legs. Turned out it was shingles. So painful

Raera · 10/04/2020 20:02

Lie on your back.
Draw your toes up to point towards your face.
Where does that make it hurt (if at all)

AvocadoPrime · 10/04/2020 20:03

@rufflecrow I'm probably being irrational worrying about dvt. I have had 2 children and an epidural + lumbar punctures. One is still very young and so is picked up lots. I had done some of the joe wickes pe videos and few weeks ago. Right now I am laying down with toddler and electric type pain in butt cheek more than anywhere else. Do get alot of pain in calf which I think is what's worrying me but anxiety may be playing a big part. I very much doubt 111 will deal with me considering I have no textbook worrying symptoms .

OP posts:
AvocadoPrime · 10/04/2020 20:09

@Raera it just feels like the calf is stretching more uncomfortable than pain, the other leg feels the same. The pain moves alot. It's now in my groin. Very strange.
@Dita73 oh no! I hope you are better now! My pain has been going on just over a week. I wouldnt say excruiticaying. More annoying.
@Heygirlheyboy oh no! I've heard they can be easily misdiagnosed. Maybe I read too much and panic myself! I did speak to the doctor last week on the phone who asked lots of questions about pain. It's now in my foot (moved again from groin) it's so weird!

Anyone who tells you to get a grip can piss off. Anxiety about your health is a terrible thing (I have health anxiety and I'm in the middle of a bad spell at the moment). I can't offer you any medical advice but I just wanted to say I understand your feelings. I hope you feel better x

Heygirlheyboy · 10/04/2020 20:12

I think call and give all that info, it should surely be enough to distinguish between the two. The fact it's moving so much makes me think sciatica.

RuffleCrow · 10/04/2020 20:16

Yeah OP mine is almost always butt cheek based - and i did Joe wicks for the first time yesterday and now have a mild flare up Confused. If you search 'Do Yoga With Me' on Youtube they have a specific sciatica video that really relieved my symptoms last time i had the electic bum shock thing. Also Adriene has a specific video which helps quite a bit, but you have to approach it with caution, as she says. Do call 111 if you're really worried it could be something worse though.

AvocadoPrime · 11/04/2020 16:43

Thank you unusualusernames! I have done a few exercises for sciatica. It just seems to be getting worse if anything. The pain in my calf is awful!

As someone who has had 3 DVTs please get checked. Best case its nothing serious, worse case you receive the appropriate treatment needed. Good luck

Mawbags · 11/04/2020 17:15

Sciatica with me of shooting and stabbing pain

I think dvt is more like a throbbing

Ihatesocialmedia · 11/04/2020 17:18

Electric type shooting pain sounds like classic sciatica. I had emergency back surgery and now have scar tissue that causes the shooting sciatica pain daily and honestly I would happily stick a needle in my own back to get rid of it!

AvocadoPrime · 11/04/2020 17:59

Yes I may just get it checked. It's got much worse today. No back pain just agony in the calf where it hurts to walk Hmm frustrating that it's a weekend as options are limited and I know 111 wont touch it because there isnt any swelling or redness.

OP posts:
Sixgeese · 11/04/2020 18:53

I have had 2 DVTs and only had swelling with one. For both, for the leg with the clot, it felt like like I was walking around with a wellington boot that was filled with water on.

If in doubt it is always worth getting it checked.

Heygirlheyboy · 11/04/2020 19:12

Yes my sis said she was dragging her leg along. Hope all OK OP.

Sn0tnose · 11/04/2020 19:41

@sn0tnose do you mind me asking what the pain was like?

Sorry Avocado, I didn’t see this. The first time, it felt like a pulled muscle from my calf to my thigh. While in A&E it got more painful. It hurt to put my foot on the ground and to stretch my toes upwards. The second time was a slight dull ache. The third time, I had no pain at all and it was just not being able to breath that made me think there might be a problem! A subsequent ultrasound showed trauma in my vein.

AvocadoPrime · 11/04/2020 20:21

I've put my big girl pants on and rang 111. Once I got through they were very quick. I've been sent to the hospital to see a doctor so I'm waiting in A&E now, thank you all Smile

Runningjayne · 11/04/2020 20:44

I hope you get sorted out quickly op. Thanks for posting this, I've been suffering the last few days with pain on and off shooting from my bum cheek through my thigh. I had no Idea what it was. Have now googled and sounds just like sciatica

mummymayhem18 · 11/04/2020 21:04

Hope you get seen soon and are ok.

AvocadoPrime · 11/04/2020 21:39

I am home now. Doctor was horrendously rude. Sat me away from her and made me wear a mask. Wouldnt look at my leg because I have 0 risk. Told me to take co-codamol even though I am breastfeeding. Was awful :( so still no reassurance or answers and now feel terrible and upset. So I really shouldn't have bothered.
Hope you're okay @RunningjayneFlowers
