To be really disappointed in Neils Yard?

I’m not under any illusions that Neil’s Yard products are amazing but they’re nice and have a shop local to me so I get stuff there occasionally and have found some nice products over the years. Today a post came up on a community page on fb reminding us to ‘support local business’ from someone claiming to be a Neil’s Yard ‘consultant’. A quick look on their website reveals that they operate as an MLM on the side. I feel really disappointed, I thought this was a legitimate business and have been buying their products for years (and more embarrassingly giving them as gifts). Is it a total overreaction to never use them again?

See Ben Goldacre. his book criticises homeopathy but he also comes down very hard (harder actually)

I disagree. He came down way harder on homeopathy than "big pharma" and rightly so. There is absolutely no evidence, properly carried out, meeting correct scientific standards, that has proven any efficacy in homeopathy.

On the other hand, the vast majority of medications on the market do what they say they will.

Neal's Yard don't do much in the way of homeopathic remedies. Their main products are simply organic cosmetics made with natural ingredients based on aromatherapy, which is different to homeopathy.

Checked and the starter kit is £100, for which you get quite a lot for your money and you aren't required to sell anything more.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 10/04/2020 14:32

The ingredients lists for Neal Yard's homeopathic "medicines" seem pretty accurate! 😉

To be really disappointed in Neils Yard?

Regardless of what you think about homeopathy healing a bruise, they not only sold this as a MALARIA treatment - they then refused to answer questions about it. Surely if you believe enough to profit from it and have people risk their lives on it you should at least defend this decision?

I don't think Boots sold homeopathic malaria 'treatments', although please correct me if I'm wrong. There is a vast difference between this and people giving it a go to make a cold better.

bettybattenburg · 10/04/2020 14:36

I love Neal's Yard stuff. I have been known to do an hour long train journey to the station that has one of their shops Grin

MrsGrindah · 10/04/2020 14:42

I thought the Covent Garden branch had closed down?

donquixotedelamancha · 10/04/2020 14:45

Homeopathy is not "just water".

Of course it is.

It also works on animals.......how would you explain that?

It doesn't work on any animals, humans included. If you could produce firm evidence to the contrary you'd win a Nobel prize.

Alternative medicine which is shown to have an effect is just called medicine.

TBRuton · 10/04/2020 14:48

TiredofSM · 10/04/2020 14:50

@OhhhPeee and the Avon representatives.

goldfinchfan · 10/04/2020 14:59

And what do you know about Homeopathy? Like really know?

or are you repeating something you read?

JasonPollack · 10/04/2020 15:01

I hate mlm. I didn't know this about Neil's yard though and won't use them again.YANBU.

CaraConcerned · 10/04/2020 15:07

And what do you know about Homeopathy? Like really know?

This HAS to be a windup. From the person who literally just posted "It is the preferred medicine of the Royal Family and has been since the Queen's parent's have used it.".
Did you see that with your own eyes? or did you... READ IT somewhere?!

anyway

goldfinchfan · 10/04/2020 15:12

I know. I worked at Nelson"s

Look it up. Own eyes, ears and Brain....

goldfinchfan · 10/04/2020 15:12

where did you think Prince Charles got into it from? His grandparents....

MiggyMoggyMoo · 10/04/2020 15:19

I refuse to shop there now after I went in to buy my friend some bits for after she had her twins and got a lecture of the benefits of breast feeding. It was so rude and uncalled for that I emailed head office and they ignored me!
Haven't shopped there since and the twins are 4 now!

ItsGoingTibiaK · 10/04/2020 15:23

I looked it up and read about it, but as I haven't actually seen it with my own eyes, I don't believe it exists.

I'm so tired of people, y'know, reading and shit to learn about stuff.

donquixotedelamancha · 10/04/2020 15:24

I worked at Nelson"s

Personally if I preyed on the vulnerable I would not be so chuffed about it.

Why on earth does you you having worked for a company which sells snake oil change the evidence that homeopathy is bobbins?

If you want to show a medicine works then links to peer reviewed double blind triaps are your best bet.

donquixotedelamancha · 10/04/2020 15:27

I refuse to shop there now after I went in to buy my friend some bits for after she had her twins and got a lecture of the benefits of breast feeding.

If that happens again, tell them you use formula but really, really water it down, so it's extra effective.

VodselForDinner · 10/04/2020 15:30

For anyone willing to educate themselves about homeopathy-

www.howdoeshomeopathywork.com/

goldfinchfan · 10/04/2020 15:32

You think the Roayl fam are vulnerable?

No really I did not prey on anyone...I was a worker not an owner I only made my not very high salary.

But it does piss me off to see a harmless alternative to toxic meds being dissed by people who KNOW NOTHING about it.

And that is all i have to say on it.

goldfinchfan · 10/04/2020 15:32

sorry Royal Family

NoMoreDickheads · 10/04/2020 15:34

YANBU if you feel that strongly about MLMs. Overpriced and flakey stuff anyway.

I suppose Avon is an MLM but people don't view it as harshly.

Yes I knew someone years ago that used to try and sell Neal's Yard stuff.

NoMoreDickheads · 10/04/2020 15:37

@goldfinchfan 'a harmless alternative to toxic meds' = expensive snake oil with no real evidence of effectiveness; dangerous in that, as you've just implied, it might discourage people from seeking the evidence based treatment they need.

donquixotedelamancha · 10/04/2020 16:22

it does piss me off to see a harmless alternative to toxic meds being dissed by people who KNOW NOTHING about it.

May I ask what qualifications you would accept which would permit someone to comment on the effectiveness of homeopathy?

RuffleCrow · 10/04/2020 16:34

It seems so pointless. Why would anyone buy from me rather than direct from the website? (Other than pity)
