Do you think I can fit in a 1 week holiday this year? Or is 2020 a complete write off? Not thinking of a UK holiday!

Do you think that air travel will be unavailable for the rest of the year or will some flights start maybe June/July time?

The lockdown will stop (I am thinking maybe beginning of May) eventually so what happens next?

Oh, please don't!! Plenty of beaches on the mainland!

What the actual fuck does that mean?? The mainland? Ireland is not a fucking part of the uk.
Jesus fuxjing christ.

banana64 · 11/04/2020 22:42

After the absolute balls the uk made of it the british wont be welcome anywhere. For about a generation at the least.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/04/2020 22:49

DH and I cancelled our June holiday (cruise) and I really don't want a UK holiday . It doesn't feel like getting away and if I do take leave and can travel I'd sooner just go and visit my parents .

Last year DH and I went away , I nearly died and spent 2 weeks in hospital abroad , many weeks recovery .
Travel Insurance is 100% vital. To think of travel without being properly covered is lunacy.

TypingError · 11/04/2020 22:53

Well I read up on it....... really wish I hadn't!!

I know, but I think people should. It's a very serious threat. The second wave can take populations by surprise and be more severe.

I had flu in the circa 1960 Asian flu pandemic which affected more children than adults. I was 4 years old but I remember it clearly. Our entire family of 5 went down with it and we relied on community help for fluid and food (though too I'll to actually eat) Many families suffered the same.
Coronavirus appears even more virulent than that. I and others are taking it very seriously. We are not being ridiculous or negative.

motortroll · 11/04/2020 23:04

I'll be happy to get away in the caravan in the uk at some point this year! Even if I could go away abroad I don't think I would. Our planned holiday was ferry to France with the caravan in August. I'd rather not go on a ferry or plane straight after lock down.

If we drive our car with the caravan to a more remote campsite I'd be happy with that just for some screen free family time outdoors and if we're lucky maybe a small cafe or macdonalds!!

Obv not using my caravan atm like some morons!!

So to answer your question, I'd write off 2020 for foreign holidays. Large group transport options in an enclosed space are not something I'd fancy even if they were available.

Srictlybakeoff · 11/04/2020 23:05

I posted about Spanish flu because I feel that people are unrealistic about how long this will last , including the need for social distancing. We are not at the top of the curve , but even when we are it’s a long way back down.
There are reasons that the second wave of Spanish flu was more virulent which hopefully won’t apply this time, and usually viruses become less virulent as time goes on. But international travel seems totally unlikely to me any time soon.

babasaclover · 11/04/2020 23:13

I have a few trips booked - 2 already cancelled by airline - I reckon November one I have booked 'may' go ahead if we're lucky!

rookiemere · 12/04/2020 09:12

70isalimit I've always been a great advocate of travel insurance, but our annual policy hasn't been much help, even when I managed to add on travel disruption before this all got too bad.

They won't refund a penny of my ski trip as that was disinclination to travel - yup strangely not keen to travel to France 2 days before the lockdown. I have a few small trips where cost of flights is around the excess limit. So our main summer trip BA cancelled the flights which is great because means I can claim and it's not coronavirus related. I asked about claiming connecting flights from our local airport to London and a deposit in Costa Rica and was told that I should always try to get refunded through the provider. So basically no point in having travel insurance in these present circumstances and you might as well save yourself the money - and I never would have said that before.

Feel a bit sorry for the airlines and travel industry, but insurance should surely be there exactly for these circumstances.

Fluffybutter · 12/04/2020 09:27

You can read all these posts by people who think they have all the answers but nobody does , nobody knows and nobody can tell you what will happen.
If you book anything now it won’t be covered by insurance if it’s for this year , that’s the only factual bit of info

Fluffybutter · 12/04/2020 09:29

@banana64 what the fuck are you talking about ?

1981m · 12/04/2020 10:05

I am keeping my fingers crossed for a last minute holiday in August. Reckon they will be very cheap

JRUIN · 12/04/2020 10:57

People are dying and all you're worried about is your next holiday abroad. I was hoping this virus might at least have taught us a little something, but it seems not.

rookiemere · 12/04/2020 11:15

People are always dying that's kind of how it works. What lessons should we learn - to sit in sackcloth and ashes until this is over ? Tourism pays the wages of lots of low earners around the world, without it they won't have enough money to feed their families.

Fluffybutter · 12/04/2020 11:30

Op is not “worried” it was just a question.
Stop being so offended about those looking forward to this being over .
People die everyday from things other than this so by your reasoning people should never look forward to anything or go on holiday .. Hmm

HostessTrolley · 12/04/2020 11:44

I’ve got two weeks in Turkey booked for the start of July. British airways vouchers are no use as you have to use them to completion within a year of the date of your original outward travel, so if we went next year we’d have to be back by the end of June which doesn’t work with uni terms. I’m just pondering moving our booking for the first two weeks of September - the villa has capacity and I can change the flight dates for free, just paying any difference.

Matildathehun77 · 12/04/2020 11:59

Please point out the part where op (or anybody else) says "I don't care who dies as long as I get my holiday" ??? Confused I hope to God that this is nobody.
Caring about the small, every day stuff like holidays or clothes doesn't mean we don't understand or appreciate the gravity of the situation. It doesn't mean we don't care. It just means that people can have more than one thought process going on at a time and that sometimes you need to distract yourself by thinking about things that are a bit lighter.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/04/2020 12:24

@JRUIN people are allowed to feel however they want about things. It's not a competition and you've got no right to police people. Asking about a holiday does not mean OP doesn't care that people are dying.

Peopleshouses · 12/04/2020 12:32

Odfo with your sanctimonious twattery.

I have a permanent knot in my stomach thinking about the worldwide implications of this but can still be sad about holidays lost. It's like there is before Covid and after - I was watching Absolutely Fabulous the other night and it seemed so distant and nostalgic watching them flitting about in Cannes. We can feel sad that our lives and many others have changed for ever, the large and small elements alike.

Spied · 12/04/2020 12:38

We cancelled our July 2020 holiday and tbh I'm not even thinking about 2021.
It'll be more 2022 I'm thinking or maybe I'm being overly pessimistic.

Fluffybutter · 12/04/2020 12:44

Massively pessimistic I’d say

JRUIN · 12/04/2020 12:56

But OP wants to go on holiday next month! As if everything's going to be back to normal by then ffs. Of course it won't be, and I should hope the government won't be allowing anyone to fly out or into the country until the end of the year at least! It just feels so wrong to be worrying about holidays abroad this soon, when we are still very much in the middle of such a serious situation that is risking people's health and livelihoods. And here's another bit of sanctimony for you all-how about we allow the earth a bit more of a cleansing before we all get back to merrily polluting the air again.

GenderApostate19 · 12/04/2020 13:06

We have a week in Prague booked in July, I’m not expecting to go, don’t imagine I would want to get on a plane anyway.
DSil is convinced they’ll still be going to Disney/Florida in September, I think they have more chance of winning the lottery tbh.

I’ve managed to move our May half term UK break to next year, no choice really as Hoseasons will not refund anyone and travel insurance / claiming section75 on credit cards won’t pay out if a company is offering credit notes/vouchers. So they have everyone’s money and people can’t do a damn thing about it - Including £2500 of mine for a 4 bedroom hot tub lodge ( was a special family holiday for 7 of us)

BogRollBOGOF · 12/04/2020 13:07

If we make it out of the UK to see the ILs before next Easter, I'll be presently surprised.

The reality of balancing the health/ social/ economic impacts of the virus are completely untreaded water.

My logical guess is that international travel will be one of the last elements to return to "normal". There is no point in country A managing the virus if a tourist from country B enters and starts a new wave of transmission. Domestic tourism will be viable before that point, and the UK is a fantastic, diverse country to travel around. As much as I've loved a diverse range of experiences around the world, they have also taught me to appreciate what the UK has and how different it can be to a place 10 miles down the road.

banana64 · 12/04/2020 13:26

@Fluffybutter what do you think im talking about. The uk is not 'the mainland' to Ireland.
And the uk have made a total shitshow of handling or not handling the pandemic. You wont be allowed in any country for years and years after it.

sofato5miles · 12/04/2020 13:47

@bananabutter do you have much any international experience?

I am white with a British accent , and am still overseas, where i have spent most my life. You have come to quite an unusual conclusion, in my opinion.

Really, no one gives a fuck about individual countries other than the US, Russia and China (dependent on where in the world you live)
