Do you think I can fit in a 1 week holiday this year? Or is 2020 a complete write off? Not thinking of a UK holiday!

Do you think that air travel will be unavailable for the rest of the year or will some flights start maybe June/July time?

The lockdown will stop (I am thinking maybe beginning of May) eventually so what happens next?

I just can’t see this ending this year. Even if lockdown relaxes, there will still be so many risks that life won’t be normal until there’s a vaccine or reliable cure - which is probably a year away.

Maybe try a different type of UK holiday? You can’t expect sun and outdoor swimming but you could have an activity holiday and a spa break if lockdown relaxes.

PersonaNonGarter · 10/04/2020 21:39

It isn’t just a question of us going abroad, it’s the stance the UK takes too. There’s no way tourists will be back in central London before the end of the summer.

Womencanlift · 10/04/2020 21:46

I had 4 holidays planned this year as it’s a special birthday and have been planning and saving for ages. Two city breaks (supposed to be away this weekend for Easter) and two bigger holidays. Absolutely gutted if I’m honest. There will be next year but it won’t be the same as the special birthday will have passed.

But as long as all my friends and family are still here and heathy next year, that more than makes up for the disappointment

JaceLancs · 10/04/2020 22:06

I’ve got something booked for July but assuming it won’t go ahead so am planning on booking some flights for November or December somewhere warm n cross fingers

returnofthecat · 10/04/2020 22:21

I think if you want a holiday this year, you're looking at building a pillow fort in your living room and going camping.

RJnomore1 · 10/04/2020 22:30

I dunno, as soon as possibly I’ll be somewhere hot with a cocktail and I reckon there’s bargains to be had when it starts. Confidence will be low and sadly many people will be out of work.

It should be fine by September.

Crikey0000 · 10/04/2020 22:34

Write it off ffs.

BB8sAntenna · 10/04/2020 22:46

My in-laws live in Spain and they want us to visit when quarantine has lifted. I said that we are probably looking at next year at this rate and they said oh we were thinking September or October Hmm I said that’s a bit optimistic, what if there are travel restrictions still in place? They seemed to think I was BU but I said there’s no point in booking anything until we know what’s happening.

Tbh I think I would write this year off.

Bootikin · 10/04/2020 23:06

Startled that this is the top of your “things to worry about” list. Jesus, really? The world economy is going to be utterly fucked - it’s going to be similar ton(or worse than) the depression of 29/30. There are goin to be such massive problems to deal with over the next 6/12 months!

Matildathehun77 · 10/04/2020 23:22

I'd say when travel between countries is re established it'll be expensive (travel companies and airlines going bust) slow (loads of checks and possibly quarantines) and reserved for essential/important travel only. I'd honestly start looking for something lovely to do a couple of hours from where you live as this is so much more realistic in your time frame. Holidays abroad may have to go on hold for a year or two..., sorry!

TimeAintNothing · 11/04/2020 00:19

Startled that this is the top of your “things to worry about” list. Jesus, really?

Brace yourself for a shocking piece of information.

Okay. Here goes.

People can care about more than one thing at once. They can worry about the details, large and small, of their own lives as well as worrying about the big picture. It's not one or the other.

DianaT1969 · 11/04/2020 01:00

If we're allowed to travel to Ireland in the summer I would recommend it as an alternative to a UK holiday. You can drive by ferry. Activity centres on lakes and long, unspoilt beaches.

rosiejaune · 11/04/2020 01:03

You should stop "fitting in" foreign holidays at all. It is selfish to fly and trash the planet for everyone (though others will suffer more for it than you).

Littleposh · 11/04/2020 01:14

I don't think the end of lockdown is going to be like flicking a switch tbh, there's going to be rules and restrictions for a long time. I've written off a holiday this year to avoid disappointment but I doubt we could afford one now anyway

safariboot · 11/04/2020 01:24

To be honest, nobody knows. But the further in the future, the more optimistic I'd be that holidays will be reopened.

On the other hand if predictions of a global recession pan out, you might not be able to AFFORD a holiday. We'll all be at increased risk of losing our job, or having our credit card interest raised and limit lowered. If the airline industry is decimated the remaining airlines will probably increase ticket prices.

OhMargo · 11/04/2020 01:29

TBH I don't think I'd be happy to be in a crowded plane or airport anytime soon, but others may be more brave than me.

And if planes must observe social distancing the price will rocket for flights.

Oh and the countries we might want to visit may also have a mandatory quarantine period.

I personally would not be comfortable travelling abroad by train, boat or plane for a good while.

81Byerley · 11/04/2020 01:44

Do you think Covid19 is going to miraculously disappear? I wouldn't be surprised if we're still in the same position in a years time. I have a UK holiday booked for September. I'm fully expecting it to be cancelled.

HeretoThereandBackAgain · 11/04/2020 03:53

I was really hoping for a holiday this year, and a big one at that, as I’ve not had one for four years. Kind of got used to the fact it won’t happen though. I have booked to see relatives at Christmas, so hoping that can go ahead at least. Flights were booked before the virus appeared.

tearsandtiaras · 11/04/2020 04:03

Ive got a holiday booked in July to Morocco.
Im optimistically hoping to be able to go

Some people on here are really ridiculous.

TypingError · 11/04/2020 05:17

Even if the restrictions are lifted, there's a real possibility of a significant resurgence in any country at any time. Imagine being on holiday far from home when it all blows up again. I doubt that governments will overlook this possibility. I guess foreign holidays are off the cards until we get reliable therapy or a vaccine.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 11/04/2020 05:19

DH & I were hoping for our first holiday abroad in nearly 10 years in 2020.
Not holding our breath!
After all this shizzle I don't think I'll feel safe enough to do it for at least 12 months anyway.

Glitterbaby17 · 11/04/2020 05:26

I don’t think any of us can know. We are in Australia and have a new baby on the way in July. My Mum was coming for the birth, and my sister coming in June. That definitely won’t happen. We have flights back to the U.K. booked for late Sept - I think it’s highly unlikely to go ahead but if the 15 minute test has been developed may be possible with heavy restrictions. I’m hoping Christmas might be possible but not holding my breath. It’s devastating as miss my family desperately, and will be sad if they don’t see my toddler who adores them or new baby for a long time. However the most important thing is that everyone is alive and well at the end of this.

What we do need to remember is there is a lot that we don’t know. However the best scientists in the world are working on ways to combat this. Getting the airlines and tourism businesses open again will be something governments are keen to do, but not until it’s safe. Two weeks in quarantine at either end isn’t really feasible for a holiday - more urgent travel, medical needs, relocation/repatriation etc

Harakeke · 11/04/2020 05:42

NZ says its borders will be closed for at least a year. I find it pretty amazing that people are planning to go anywhere while there is so much uncertainty. Why would you?!

I’m also hoping this will mean people travel less, mass tourism has done little for the health of our planet.

sofato5miles · 11/04/2020 05:57

@harekeke because people are separated from the ones they love. Absolutely, i hope testing and medical passports become available soon, so that travel restrictions can be be applied in a functional way.

sofato5miles · 11/04/2020 05:58

And also, commerce, the potential deaths from a global economic depression also need to avoided too.
