Do you think I can fit in a 1 week holiday this year? Or is 2020 a complete write off? Not thinking of a UK holiday!

Do you think that air travel will be unavailable for the rest of the year or will some flights start maybe June/July time?

The lockdown will stop (I am thinking maybe beginning of May) eventually so what happens next?

OP posts:
Glitterbaby17 · 11/04/2020 06:19

@Harakeke because not everyone is able to live close to their family, and want to see them when it’s safe.

KitKatKit · 11/04/2020 06:27

I think this year is a write off OP. 😬

Sostenueto · 11/04/2020 06:30

Unbelievable!

81Byerley · 11/04/2020 07:37

@tearsandtiaras Who is being ridiculous? I'd put my pension on you not being able to go away in July. 3 months is a very short time in the life of a pandemic.

Roselilly36 · 11/04/2020 07:44

2020 is a write off as far as foreign holidays are concerned IMHO. We know we won’t be going on our usual Dec trip, but a small price to pay during a pandemic of this scale.

Harakeke · 11/04/2020 09:23

@Glitterbaby17 this describes me - I have family and in laws in Europe. My children have aunts, uncles, grandparents over there.

But I want my children to have a planet with clean air and water when they grow up.

TypingError · 11/04/2020 13:10

I've got a holiday booked in July to Morocco.
Im optimistically hoping to be able to go

Grin

tearsandtiaras · 11/04/2020 14:06

Typing error thanks for the smily face . I too am smiling hoping for the best. Were you in fact trying to make fun of me? Did it make you feel good?

In answer to the question, I find it ridiculous across the mumsnet boards people sharing their opinion as fact. Nobody knows what will happen in 3 months time with the current state of play

It makes me sad the negativity that is blasted across the boards at the moment
Whatever we have collectively lost across the globe people are allowed to have hope . Hope and faith.
You wouldn't think it with the sniping and negativity that comes from a lot of posters

ilikebooksandplants · 11/04/2020 16:46

I really hope everyone who is hoping to go away this summer (me included!) is able to.

Bathroom12345 · 11/04/2020 16:48

I didn’t ever state that this was the top of my priorties!

There are some real doom mongers on MN. There is one poster who is starting numerous threads and is constantly criticising the government and making everything political. I wonder why she doesn’t think about standing herself she goes on and on so much.

We cannot carry on locked away for months on end. Other things that people are dying of are getting ignored. Tank the economy and there will be little left over to help people who cannot afford to heat their houses, help them get back to work. Everything is being put on hold, operations, transplants etc are being cancelled. Some of those people will die. I like the idea about opening the lockdown slowly, don’t mind restaurants and pubs being restricted on numbers. If people are turned away so be it. Same with supermarkets. There is plenty on the shelves, the weather is getting better, it will be fine to queue.

I hope we don’t get so bogged down that we start to say ‘one life saved means we need to keep everything closed’

TheStarryNight · 11/04/2020 17:09

I wouldn’t bank on a warm reception anywhere tbh.

Coffeecak3 · 11/04/2020 17:17

My dgs normally spends the summer holidays with us in France. If he can't get here there will be no-one to care for him whilst his parents work.
Luckily my ds has already booked flights so I'm hoping he can come.

MooseBreath · 11/04/2020 17:20

I'm another one having a baby (end of May) whose family lives in another country (Canada). I was really hoping to visit at least by December so that my parents and brothers could meet their grandson/nephew and so that I could see my grandparents, all of whom have seen better days. Fingers crossed some international travel can go forward.

Ponoka7 · 11/04/2020 17:31

tearsandtiaras, do you think you've had Covid, or would you take the chance of ending up with the virus in a hospital in Morocco, bearing in mind the insurance companies won't be covering it?

We might touch lucky and get an antibody test. It is being said that a vaccine could be available in September. But the whole of the world, including Africa won't have had it.

Everyone's health systems will be recovering and there will be law and order issues in lots of countries, i could see some countries going back to being dangerous for western tourists.

tearsandtiaras · 11/04/2020 18:18

I have had covid 19 earlier in the year.

When the time comes I will weigh up the options given to me to determine the best way forward.

Until then I will have optimism, hope and faith.

Iflyaway · 11/04/2020 18:33

If we're allowed to travel to Ireland in the summer I would recommend it as an alternative to a UK holiday. You can drive by ferry. Activity centres on lakes and long, unspoilt beaches.

Oh, please don't!! Plenty of beaches on the mainland!

Iflyaway · 11/04/2020 18:35

I have had covid 19 earlier in the year.

How do you know? No tests available for the general public....

midgebabe · 11/04/2020 18:46

Won't it depend a lot on the border crossing rules of the countries you want to visit?

Bathroom12345 · 11/04/2020 20:47

Is anyone else tired of people saying that they have it already, so many of my worried well friends and colleagues going on and on about how they are about to have it, have had it or know someone who had it.

WITHOUT A TEST THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN SAFELY STATE YOU HAVE IT!

tearsandtiaras · 11/04/2020 21:25

Why are people assuming I haven't had a test ! Yet again more opinion being laid out as fact 😳

Srictlybakeoff · 11/04/2020 21:40

Read up about the Spanish flu pandemic and the second wave. Personally I will be very happy if I manage a short UK holiday this year. It s all about protecting ourselves until there is an effective vaccine. International travel is one of the reasons we are in this situation now

user1471500037 · 11/04/2020 21:59

I’m keen to go to Iceland, can still get there in at the moment, restaurants and hotels open, good system of testing in place. I’m going to leave it till end of May. Whatever situation here, worth a trip out and flights only £220 return.

TypingError · 11/04/2020 22:21

Heh. There's no way Morocco are going to allow holidaymakers from the UK this side of next Easter. I'm not being negative. Just realistic.

Well I read up on it....... really wish I hadn't!!

TypingError · 11/04/2020 22:36

That's true. My cousin came back from Italy in mid march with a cough that turned into pneumonia. He was very poorly. They did give him a CV text which came out negative, but they said it wasn't entirely reliable. Until there's an antibody test it's not an exact science
