To be annoyed at note through door asking us to clap

Seriously, surely everyone knows about the clapping at this point and would do it if they wanted to/could?

I don't need a note through my door to make me feel crappy for not taking part. I thought at first it was a note asking if anyone needs assistance/shopping etc but nope, just a passive aggressive note thanking everyone for taking part and if those that haven't could join in this week. Eff that.

Don't get me wrong I applaud the NHS and keyworkers and have the upmost respect for them but I'm not clapping for my own practical reasons (getting baby to sleep is hard work, I'm not going to clap/bang pots just to wake them up again).

I'm not sure if it's my own attitude thats the problem or I'm rightly annoyed at people trying to guilt trip us into clapping. I don't need that, I've donated money and food in the last couple of weeks, I go out as little as possible (rarely), I'm doing my bit.

I think if you are going to complain about a note then you really don't have enough to worry about. If u don't want stuff through your door block it up but it's not really about that is it? The note? It's the content. If u don't agree or can't be bothered clapping then don't just keep it to yourself. But instead u decide to broadcast to everyone. Attention seeking of the upmost.

Angiemum24 · 07/04/2020 18:12

It doesn’t need to be every week. If they did it the once it would have more meaning.

natsays · 07/04/2020 18:15

They should not be going out spreading the virus. This is not essential outing.
As the NHS staff say, no point in clapping if you are spreading the virus and putting our lives at risk.
I will not be clapping for Boris either, but that is another story.

WifflyWaffle · 07/04/2020 18:15

These are the same people that get the huff if people don’t like their stupid Facebook posts which say ‘I wonder who my TRUE friends are who will like and share this?!’

keffie12 · 07/04/2020 18:16

When I first saw this title I thought it was going to be about the clap for Boris tonight which is circulating social media, which I certainly won't be joining in.

My heart and applause goes out to those working in these environments and the key workers, those dieing and their families, so on and so forth.

Even with the clapping which I do on a Thursday, it would certainly put me off having a note put through the door. Ignore if you wish too. It would certainly put me off. Being told what to do makes people do the opposite.

People have also got very pretentious I have found. Good and bad in every situation

WifflyWaffle · 07/04/2020 18:18

Random advice from NicolaDicola to just block up your door if you don’t want to receive unwanted notes, btw. How’s OP going to get her other post, Dicola? Hmm

nicoladicola · 07/04/2020 18:19

Well if u don't want to clap dont but don't come here with your pity pot expecting a positive reaction and sympathy cos some of us are just trying to survive not attention seek over petty ssues.Get in the real world. People are dying. It's no joke.

winkywonky · 07/04/2020 18:20

You sound all sound a bit boring TBH. It's a wonderful gesture and all my friends who work frontline also agree when you are standing there it feels like they are clapping for you and brings a tear to your eye. A reward that reminds you why you wear these masks all day. It also brings a sense of community, looking at your neighbours. I would never put a note through my neighbours door but I now know which ones I will bother to spend my time on. You OP would not be one of them if you can't drag your butt of the sofa for 1 minute. Sorry but only my opinion. However you should not be shamed into it. It should be something in your moral compass that makes you want to be a part of something. My kids love it and I feel you are genuinely missing something special.

nicoladicola · 07/04/2020 18:21

I have a box that the mail goes into and I quarantine it for 24 hrs and then open it. It's worked well so far

Vexed80 · 07/04/2020 18:24

I'm going to commit a cardinal sin and make a comment after not reading past the OP 🤭 but this is also something that would annoy me no end!!! I work for the NHS myself, last week I was so knackered after my run of shifts that I was already in bed for 8pm, so I didn't go out and clap. The clapping is lovely but I'd much rather people would just stay home and stop wearing gloves to go to the supermarket. This is just some busybody trying to assert themselves as head of the street. Most streets have one!!! Ignore them!! If you don't want to clap, don't xxx

Cam2020 · 07/04/2020 18:28

Some people are just overbearing and I agree it's complete virtue signalling.

@NigellaAwesome Grin I am a PA and that made me chuckle. Obviously I am not one of those PAs Grin

MouthBreathingRage · 07/04/2020 18:29

@winkywonky, it's nice that it's a good thing for you and your kids but some people not going out has absolutely nothing to do with their 'moral compass'. It says a lot about you that you'd judge your neighbours on not going out. You have no idea if your neighbours are self isolating, ill in other ways, putting kids to bed, trying to keep quiet for their frontline neighbours on shift, or just feel the clapping every week is merely for the benefit of the person doing it rather than for the 'community spirit'.

Oh and people who say 'sorry it's just my opinion/just being honest' don't realise their opinions are like a fart - you might enjoy a good whiff of it, but everyone else just think you're full of shit.

nicoladicola · 07/04/2020 18:33

Yes we loved it too. And in years to come when your grandkids are asking u about the clapping -you can say yes I did it. We were there. It felt great.Or u can say actually I couldn't be bothered so I just sat on the sofa! If all the people at home during the world wars had not bothered with things then we would all be in a different place right now

starfishmummy · 07/04/2020 18:33

We're not able to clap. We are in a "doors together" terrace so not far enough away from our neighbours on one side to go out.

YouokHun · 07/04/2020 18:33

@winkywonky there could be reasons why people aren’t out there clapping which is not because they don’t care or are “boring”. And @nicoladicola is not wanting to be told to clap a petty issue? I think notes through people’s doors telling them how to behave isn’t right. I was at my wits end when I got my telling off about not clapping and it upset me.

winkywonky · 07/04/2020 18:35

Aye whatever @MouthBreathingRage. I think I have a pretty good idea about what my neighbours are like but cheers for the heads up. I did not swear or lower the tone so your opinion means nothing to me. Off you pop.

ScrumptiousBears · 07/04/2020 18:37

I was out there clapping last week. This week our household will be in bed asleep as we are both back to work at the crack of dawn. No one knows what's going on in other people's houses.

MouthBreathingRage · 07/04/2020 18:37

If all the people at home during the world wars had not bothered with things then we would all be in a different place right now

First of all, people need to stop comparing this to a war. People are not 'fighting', it suggest those who dont make it weren't fighting hard enough.

Secondly, sitting our 'butts' on the sofa and not doing anything else is exactly what we are meant to be doing. The irony that people are being told off for not 'bothering' to go outside for the NHS is astounding.

Cam2020 · 07/04/2020 18:42

@winkywonky I agree it is a nice gesture, but it stops being a nice gesture when people feel railroaded into it; it somewhat loses its sincerity. I'm sure there are very few people in the country who are not appreciative of what everyone on the frontline are doing for us, and all those in other essential roles that are keeping the country going.

MouthBreathingRage · 07/04/2020 18:43

I think I have a pretty good idea about what my neighbours are like but cheers for the heads up.

You think but you don't actually know. My neighbours could have be 'thinking' exactly the same as you of me - a young healthy woman who hasn't gone out either time. The truth is, I had a major medical episode that happened into the first week of lockdown, and the only places I've been is in and out of hospital or in bed. My husband has been dealing with two young children all by himself, and certainly had better things to take care of than going outside 'just for a minute'. You absolutely have no idea why some of your neighbours aren't out, and unless they have specifically told you 'we're not doing it, fuck the NHS' then you have zero reason to judge them.

skyblu · 07/04/2020 18:44

I will go out and clap. I am VERY appreciative of ALL the services that are having to keep going, for the sake of the rest of us.
It’s a VERY small price to pay!
And sorry, but I think shame on all the miserable f***s that find some way or excuse to belittle this small act of appreciation & unity across the country in times like this.

Rachel1874 · 07/04/2020 18:46

Ignore it, I haven't clapped not because I don't believe they deserve it but because my child is asleep by then. If it was earlier we probably would take part. I was nervous the first night that everyone was going to wake him up but so far not that many in my street have taken part.

bigmumsymcgraw · 07/04/2020 18:48

I think the note is a real cheek. NHS workers would appreciate a pay rise and correct PPE MORE. than a round of applause. Keep doing your own thing

LadyMary50 · 07/04/2020 18:48

People could have shown their appreciation for nhs and key workers by not stripping the supermarket shelves of toilet rolls and all and any food 2 weeks ago.I find all the self congratulatory posts of people clapping on social media very shallow. On my community site they are actually naming and shaming any street that doesn’t clap.Ffs they even had a self distancing street party.Im finding it increasingly sinister, the “your either with us or against us”attitude.

deandra · 07/04/2020 18:49

I work in the NHS...I don't do it, it sets my teeth on edge!!!! Can't see the point of it.
