To not walk down the shop to buy an icecream for my DH?

Knobblybobbly · 05/04/2020 16:06

My husband has taken himself off to sulk because I have refused to make the non-essential visit to our corner shop to buy him an icecream as part of my 1hr exercise.

I have point blank refused and he thinks I’m being over the top and ridiculous. He wont go though.....

I had to "pop in" to a garage to buy sanitary towels as I'd come on unexpectedly (bloody pill!) and I felt judged. I tried to beef up my shop with some other bits but unless it was cake or chocolate, there wasn't much in!

Bluetrews25 · 05/04/2020 17:23

@Shouldbedoing - I don't know if I should thank you or throw something at you.... I'll go for the thanks, and rely on my restraint not to make too much!
Thank you! Star

Zaphodsotherhead · 05/04/2020 17:24

I work in a shop.

We don't mind at all people buying ice cream as part of their weekly shop. Or chocolate or cake or newspapers or any other 'non essential' item. Essential shopping only doesn't mean only 'essentials' must be in your basket - it means the whole trip should be essential, ie, when you've run out of food and need to top up.

We are sick of serving people who want an ice cream and a lottery ticket. Or a bar of chocolate, three cans of coke and a packet of crisps. We could be sick to death of them soon.

Hannah021 · 05/04/2020 17:25

@Knobblybobbly went to tesco today for the first time since the lock down, i dont know how ppl manage to keep contamination at bay!!
I put latex gloves on and off i went... Then i got home, didnt know to go in with my gloves or throw them outside!!! How do i take them into the kitcken without contaminating door and cupboard handles and surfaces... Then ppl kept coming towards you ignoring the arrows on the floor... No one cared, and the staff there were overloaded with stocking to get the idiots to decipher the bloody arrows!!!

Good for you not to go... It is the unneeded exposure to stupid ppl who ignore basic common sense

Fatasfooook · 05/04/2020 17:28

Show him the list of nhs staff that have died. Show him the children that have died. Show him the graphs. That should Curb his appetite for luxuries and if it doesn’t then LTB

Aesopfable · 05/04/2020 17:29

There is nothing in the rules to say you have to live in bldy gruel at the moment.

Gruel isn’t essential, don’t even think about crawling out from under the bed to make gruel! The dust under there should be able to sustain you for months!

justasking111 · 05/04/2020 17:30

Oh I would be so tempted to buy an ice cream, go on a long, long, walk and make sure the bloody thing had melted by the time I got home.

You are in the right OP.

MsJaneAusten · 05/04/2020 17:31

@CalmerViolet - I get that. What I mean is, if he wants it, he should be the one who breaks the rules, not pass the ‘decision’ over to the OP, or get pissy with her.

anothernotherone · 05/04/2020 17:31

Shoxfordian have you seen the simulation with the moving dots which helps you understand how the virus spreads? If you're in contact with just one extra unnecessary person per day you pass your germs to everyone that one extra person is in contact with, and you take their germs and those of everyone they've been in contact with home to your family.

The model is illustrated here but you have to accept the Washington Post's data protection declaration which you might not want to do. I thought everyone had seen it by now. We even have it on our intranet at work to explain to residents with learning disabilities why they can't all individually go to the local shops every day for a single item, but are putting everything on one list and getting it in one to two shops per week (14 residents) ...

roarfeckingroar · 05/04/2020 17:34

I think you're being a bit petty

ifonly4 · 05/04/2020 17:37

It's not so essential that you need to risk contact with others/put them at risk. If one of you were popping into the shop for a proper shop or a few items like bread, milk, fruit/veg, protein for main meal, then yes I'd say it'd be ok to buy a treat. As I've read so often, we're all in this together and it takes all of us to follow the restrictions.

OwlFox · 05/04/2020 17:38

You were certainly in the right. There are three of us in this household (one 12 week isolation) and we have been to the shops 3 times. Twice for weekly shops and once for milk. There are many times I have fancied extras - chocolate, prawn crackers and cake but I haven't made a special trip.

PeacockPies · 05/04/2020 17:43

You would have to save up for a year to but ice cream at the Tesco express next to me!

anothernotherone · 05/04/2020 17:43

Hannah021 disposable gloves are only useful if you put them on just before you handle your trolley/ enter the shop and remove them before touching anything in your car.

Working in care disposable gloves are removed, disposed of and replaced constantly, otherwise it's utterly pointless using them.

Imagine you're getting dog poo on your hands every time you touch anything - you wouldn't wear the poo covered gloves to drive home in would you?

In the end there is actually very little point trying to use disposable gloves for supermarket shop unless you're undressing at your front door and sealing your clothes in a bag which you boil wash, and using 5 or so pairs of gloves (dispose, replace, dispose etc), just wash your hands properly as soon as you get into the house.

SpillTheTea · 05/04/2020 17:47

This thread just shows people really don't understand what 'essential' means. Popping into shops you go past doesn't count as essential and people are stupid to be saying this is okay.

Zaphodsotherhead · 05/04/2020 17:48

Halleluja, Anothernotherone. So many people are wearing gloves in the shop and berating us if we don't wear gloves. I keep pointing out that, unless we changed gloves between every customer then gloves are no more use than hands that are regularly washed. But still people think that gloves are 'magic' and stopping us 'spreading germs'

And don't get me started on the power of knitwear to, apparently, stop germs...all those customers wearing knitted gloves or knitted scarves over their mouths and noses. I know it's giving them an illusion of control, but...really...

FizzAfterSix · 05/04/2020 17:49

It’s good to support local shops.

PotholeParadise · 05/04/2020 17:50

You were completely in the right. It's not fair on supermarket staff (probably on minimum wage) to go in just for ice-cream .

Hannah021 · 05/04/2020 17:53

@anothernotherone, the gloves i moved outside, but handling the goods and the bags without the gloves was also pointless because i was holding them with the gloves... It was really a nightmare lol

ButteryPuffin · 05/04/2020 17:54

*“It comes to something when you can’t even have an ICECREAM on a Sunday”

'Why don't you go yourself then?' is what I would say to this. Not that I think he should, but it's even worse that he expects you to do what he won't do himself!

midsomermurderess · 05/04/2020 17:54

I don't understand why you need to ask.

willowmelangell · 05/04/2020 17:56

Get your DP to read the thread 'to talk to you about life in Spain'
Huge wake up call.

CalmerViolet · 05/04/2020 18:04

So 7 people on this thread think that popping into a shop for an once cream when you don’t need to do any other essential shopping is ok?

If you think it is OK, why do you think so? I am baffled.

MadameJosephine · 05/04/2020 18:04

Yabu because you could easily walk past the shop instead on your allowed daily walk

Surely you can see the difference between walking past a shop and actually entering it, touching things inside the shop and interacting with the staff within?

I despair, I really do.

YouDoYou18 · 05/04/2020 18:07

Yeah you’re definitely not being unreasonable at all, it’s a bit of a long one but you could make ice cream if you have the ingredients! It’s lovely once it’s finally ready!
