To not walk down the shop to buy an icecream for my DH?

Knobblybobbly · 05/04/2020 16:06

My husband has taken himself off to sulk because I have refused to make the non-essential visit to our corner shop to buy him an icecream as part of my 1hr exercise.

I have point blank refused and he thinks I’m being over the top and ridiculous. He wont go though.....

Does he always act like he has a servant at his beck and call?

MsJaneAusten · 05/04/2020 16:59

Why is HE not going if he wants one?

LavenderQuartz · 05/04/2020 16:59

those who say 'you are there anyway'.....can you not think about SHOP STAFF experiencing all the extra footfall???

why should they be faced with an extra threat on top of regular shoppers?

Iwantacookie · 05/04/2020 17:00

I agree with @rhonia it's fine to pick up none essentials when your already in the shop for essentials.

CalmerViolet · 05/04/2020 17:02

@stripesareforlife @StrongMama1989

People need to cut the number of trips out and to the shops to the absolute minimum.

So yes, but ice cream alongside essential groceries when you have to shop, but don’t pop in for non essentials.

Because shops are places many other people have been every day, why add risk for the shopkeeper, why add risk to yourself??

I live within short walking distance from the family whose 13 year old died, we are in the most infected borough.

Every time I go out I risk infection.

This 2m thing in a shop is not going to protect you much.

It really seems as if some people are not getting it.

anothernotherone · 05/04/2020 17:03

Richwitch that's not what the OP's husband is asking her to do. He's asking her to go into a shop and come into closer contact with people including but not only shop staff just to buy an ice-cream.

Surely everyone capable of writing a sentence on MN is capable of understanding that every single extra contact with another person outside the household is a contact with everyone that person has come into contact with in terms of risk. When you go into a corner shop you might come into closer than 2 meters contact with several customers and certainly with the cashier. You have to have this contact once a week or so to buy your meal ingredients and that's the time to also put treats and snacks in your trolley or basket.

Putting treats and snacks into your main shop doesn't add an additional unnecessary exposure to droplets from other people's breath and the number of people exposed to your own droplets.

CalmerViolet · 05/04/2020 17:04

Why is HE not going if he wants one?

Because he shouldn’t be going either!

TemoraryUsername · 05/04/2020 17:05

He's sulking because you won't but he also won't... Confused how's lockdown going living with an overgrown toddler?

I wouldn't either. Shops are high contact areas - lots of people pass through them. Passing through once a week/as infrequently as you can and not more often on a whim helps keep the foot traffic down and to less of a risk to EVERYBODY.

Ritchwitch nobody's being asked to live on gruel. They're saying have your luxuries, but build buying them into your normal weekly shop. Nobody died of waiting a few days for ice cream. More people will die if we pop to the corner shop more often then strictly necessary.

anothernotherone · 05/04/2020 17:08

Knobblybobbly your update suggests he's also expecting you to take a small child into the shop to buy him an ice-cream... Is that right?

madcatladyforever · 05/04/2020 17:08

Yes thanks very much I'm desperate for some chocolate now and I can't go out.

KaptenKrusty · 05/04/2020 17:09

Omg your all mental - the fucking ice cream police will come and get you!

😂

TemoraryUsername · 05/04/2020 17:09

@Shouldbedoing HOLY MOLEY that recipe looks good, and it seems I now have an answer for what to do with the frozen smoothie fruit I have, too, thanks! Grin (My nutribullet broke and rather than order a new one I'm trying to do without unnecessary deliveries to avoid extra pressure on couriers and RM for now)

Lookabee · 05/04/2020 17:09

How lovely for the shop staff that he's willing to put them at risk because he wants an ice cream. entitled twat.

LockedInMadness · 05/04/2020 17:10

Are you walking past the shop on your walk OP?

That's not the bloody point. Op would be putting herself at risk and the shop workers for something that is not essential. How can people still not get it??? I despair.

Zisforstripyoss · 05/04/2020 17:14

YANBU. I was craving an ice cream earlier and didn't get one because it's not essential.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 05/04/2020 17:14

Omg your all mental - the fucking ice cream police will come and get you!

So you think it’s ok to put extra pressure on already frightened shop workers, just to buy an ice cream. I think the definition of ‘mental’ is a selfish prick who places more important on an ice cream, than the health of a shop worker. Nice priorities there.

Wehttam · 05/04/2020 17:16

OP you did the right thing. 💯

anothernotherone · 05/04/2020 17:16

KaptenKrusty deliberately goady or unable to engage brain?

Put a massive Multipack of icecream in your weekly shop. Don't go and breathe your droplets over the cashier in the corner shop, and come into contact with his or her exhaled breath to buy a single item in addition to the people you're exposing to your germs and being exposed to when you go grocery shopping.

Honestly a small child can understand this...

CalmerViolet · 05/04/2020 17:16

@KaptenKrusty love, fair enough, could you give us a brief explanation as to how the virus transmitted then? And why corner shops are an infection free zone?

NoSquirrels · 05/04/2020 17:17

Our local shop were telling us that idiots (their words) were coming in all last week for ice creams or just a bar of chocolate.

This is genuinely how the retail workers in our local Co-op feel too.
They HAVE to go to work.
They HAVE to handle your items and be exposed to all the people "popping in" on their 8-hour shifts.
In a lot of cases they would directly prefer to be bored at home and not going out.

I get it - it's very hard to resist, especially on a sunny day when you're having a lovely walk and the shop's right there and "what's the harm, I just need a bottle of water" but you're thinking about yourself.
You're not thinking about the shop workers, who do not appreciate you bending the rules to suit yourselves.

Trust me, they know who you are. And they are judging you.

Shoxfordian · 05/04/2020 17:17

Yabu because you could easily walk past the shop instead on your allowed daily walk

Knobblybobbly · 05/04/2020 17:17

Yes I was out with my child, so additional unnecessary risk.

“It comes to something when you can’t even have an ICECREAM on a Sunday”

Shop worker here who was very frustrated yesterday at all the people just popping in for a can of pop or ice cream or similar, every person that comes in increases my risk of catching it (potentially anyone could be contagious but not yet showing symptoms)
You were right OP and I’m sure the staff would be thankful to have had one less customer

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 05/04/2020 17:21

Yabu because you could easily walk past the shop instead on your allowed daily walk

No, YABU, because you haven’t bothered your arse reading the thread. 🙄
