Is this a case of do what I say, not what I do......
“The Chief Medical Officer in Scotland, Catherine Calderwood, 51, was snapped strolling across a golf course with her husband and kids after flouting lockdown advice by heading to her coastal property this weekend.”

The response from the Scottish Government......
”An SNP Government spokesman replied: “Since this start of this epidemic, the CMO has been working seven days a week preparing Scotland’s response.
“She took the opportunity this weekend to check on a family home in Fife as she knows she will not be back again until the crisis is over.
“She stayed overnight before returning to Edinburgh. In line with guidance she stayed within her own household group and observed social distancing with anyone she was in passing in the village.”

I am sure everyone else who has a second home would like to use it, or check on it, as well! Am I being unfair in thinking this is double standards and an absolute disgrace that this has been defended by a Government spokesman.

fleamadonna me too This did not surprise me:

"The Conservative stalwart... came 650th out of 650 in the 'People-Power Index' compiled by campaign group Change.org.

The index was determined by assessing each MP’s availability to their constituents, their participation in Parliament and how they listen to the public.

This was done by assessing availability of each MP, online and offline, their voting record in Parliament and how often they issues from constituents, and how much they listen to the wider public in regards to highlighting mass public campaigns and priority issues.

Sir Geoffrey, 66, who has been the MP for the area since 1992, said he was 'angry' with the result.

Change.org said: "The intention of this Index is to spark a conversation about what it means to be a 'good' MP. It should be used to celebrate MPs who are the most open and responsive to their constituents and inspire future MPs."

The index was calculated using data of the most recent term of office, since 2017"

Stop conflating this with the Royal family all you royal-haterz. We get it you don't like them. But this is from a CMO - a medical professional tasked with advising the public -and who has been on adverts advising people to stay at home, save lives.

People have been cooped up in small flats, not visited elderly relatives, not attended funerals... but a CMO can go and "check on" their second home with all their family in tow? This is disgraceful.

What if everyone who owned a second home did that this weekend? Do key workers not matter as they can't afford second homes anyway? Put your politics and prejudices away and acknowledge that this was a massive error of judgement and her position is untenable. The people of Scotland will not be able to take her advice seriously. "Stay at your second home, save lives" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Mummyshark2019 · 05/04/2020 13:08

I have stayed away from my second home.

Xenia · 05/04/2020 13:09

Although with MPs who work in London and have their children and work in a constituency too they are by the way allowed as are most other workers to drive to work and drive at work from place to place under the regulations which expressly allow driving to work and travelling once you are at work. That is the English ones. I have not read the scottish regs and i think the Scottish Bill has not yet got royal assent unlike the English one.

AmelieTaylor · 05/04/2020 13:13

@Bringringbring12 are you on her payroll??

Stop defending the indefensible.

She was part of the team making the rules, breaking them is indefensible.

If there had been a problem ONE adult could have gone to the house (preferably a neighbour or tradesperson). Not her, her DH, kids, dogs, aunt fanny & all, and no ‘issue’ I know of is helped by strolling around a golf course. Ffs

She’s lost all credibility NOT what anyone needs right now. NS should make an example of her IMO

STAY AT HOME

means YOU & YOU & YOU.

NO exceptions .

Pelleas · 05/04/2020 13:14

In my view it's disgraceful that people have second homes in a country where there's a housing shortage.

JellyFishSquish · 05/04/2020 13:19

If "stay home and saves lives" is for real, then what she did amounts to reckless endangerment

GinDrinker00 · 05/04/2020 13:22

Stay at home. Your first home.
NHS should be allowed to refuse treatment to those who don’t listen, sickening disabled people are being forced to sign DNR forms yet people are more concerned about their second homes. Don’t be a knob. Stay home. Protect the NHS. Save life’s.

Rosehip10 · 05/04/2020 13:34

She should resign - either she doesn't give a shit about the rules or thinks they are shit/wrong - neither of which is compatible with her position.

Mascotte · 05/04/2020 13:35

I always skip the ads, but does she not do one on the tv saying stay home? I might be wrong?

KaronAVyrus · 05/04/2020 13:39

Yes, she does one for SNHS.

On numerous times, on multiple channels, throughout the day.

lyralalala · 05/04/2020 13:43

It’s completely undermined any authority her words may have had, and the fact she didn’t think about the effect of being seen shows a naivety I wouldn’t expect from someone in her position

middleager · 05/04/2020 13:43

On my sickbed, listening to Animal Farm.

'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.'

Ohdeariedear · 05/04/2020 13:51

She’s had a visit from the Polis this morning and been issued with a warning about her conduct. No fine though.

Rosehip10 · 05/04/2020 13:53

Let's say a Westminster minister or very senior adviser did this - the SNP/SG would be howling.......

Cohle · 05/04/2020 13:53

The police visiting her is bloody hilarious. Christ she must feel like a right dick.

Redglitter · 05/04/2020 14:07

Typical bloody SNP making pathetic excuses. Dr Calderwood has at least admitted she was wrong to do it. The SNP idiots should have done likewise instead of making ridiculous excuses for her.

Mascotte · 05/04/2020 14:24

Thanks @KaronAVyrus I thiught I must have imagined it: you just couldn’t make this up

TheLadyAnneNeville · 05/04/2020 14:24

We’re not supposed to drive more than 2km Unless for food/medicine/care of vulnerable.

One rule for them ...

And NHS staff have been putting in 12 hr shifts, 7 on a row. They probably don’t have a second home, though.

Rather than releasing that statement, they ought to have apologised and said that this was wrong. Now, we’re all free to do what we want as long as we have an “excuse”.

DidoLamenting · 05/04/2020 14:30

I do wish people would not confuse ‘making a mistake’ with ‘quite deliberately doing something you know you shouldn’t, while imagining you’ll never be found out.’

Excellent point

Ohdeariedear · 05/04/2020 14:51

She’s getting her arse handed to her on a plate at today’s press conference, but Nicola Sturgeon seems to be saying she needs to stay during the crisis. I think she’ll stay til the lockdown is over and then go.

ChicCroissant · 05/04/2020 14:51

Also, I think the Scottish Government missed a golden opportunity to say 'this is not acceptable', their response also leaves them wide open to accusations of double standards as well.

Not removing her from her post - or suspending her at the very least - has meant this has been all over the media today, when it could have been used as an example to reinforce the advice given and close the issue down much quicker. They are dragging out the inevitable and making it much harder for themselves in the process.

MintyMabel · 05/04/2020 14:52

So i trust that she did nothing wrong. No interaction and an essential travel (who knows - a leak? ).

She broke the rules set down for the nation but the government, on her recommendation.

You don’t need 2 adults, 2 teenagers, and pets, for a whole weekend to sort out a leak.

You send one adult to deal with it.

Experience, intelligent and formidable she may be. But at best this was a huge error in judgement and the worst thing the SNP can do is make excuses for her in public. That’s the sort of sleazy cover up they would accuse others of doing.

Ohdeariedear · 05/04/2020 14:58

Sounds like the adverts featuring her telling us to stay home will be pulled, judging by that last answer given. This would make sense.

Flavabobble · 05/04/2020 14:59

I'm half expecting her to quit on the spot at this press conference.
