Queens speech

Am I the only one who actually couldn’t give a shiny shit what she has to say at this time.

People are dying , everyone is affected so the last thing we need is a rich old woman sitting in her ivory castle asking us to stay calm.

It’s really wound me up, it’s constantly being mentioned on the news!

I haven’t listened to it as I’m not very interested in what she has to say - her Christmas speeches sound stilted and lifeless so I assumed this would be the same. Might be wrong. But each to their own, and as the head of state I think an address to the nation is the right thing for her to do.

LaurieMarlow · 06/04/2020 09:28

None of it brings happiness, peace of mind or good health

And yet she’s never shown any inclination to share any of it more freely with the nation beyond what she’s absolutely required to do.

She’s never suggested that the bits she ‘couldn’t care less about’ be sold to provide essential services in tough economic times. Or be placed in museums across the country for better access for the population.

She’s never indicated that her many public residences could be better deployed.

Interesting.

This woman has the run of 7 palaces, stuffed to the gills with priceless art and antiques, stables full of thoroughbreds, her own train and the run of a seven billion pound jewellery collection

and whose strongest emotion shown to them nation' was when she had to give up The Royal Yacht!

Don't forget these palaces are stuffed to the rafters with lackies, servants, butlers, maids, cooks, valets, chauffeurs, nannies, gardeners, 'ladies' in waiting (for what I'd like to know), advisers, dressers and any relative they can stuff in to them.

And don't forget, us hardworking taxpayers are forced to pay for this sheer indulgence of one family. The crumbs of the table we are meant to be impressed by is 'Oh, Kate wore a high street dress', 'How frugal, she wore the same dress twice', 'Kate and William made a phone call to support the NHS' etc ad nauseam.

But no worry, we can marvel at the 'we are all in this together' idea, and how Charles saw fit to leave for Balmoral after we were told to stay at home. Oh - and found access to a Covid 19 test that our NHS nurses cannot!

Money makes a helluva difference in health outcomes. You can eat healthy, have access to the best doctors and medical care etc

It does not help in every case but statistically, the difference is huge!

derxa · 06/04/2020 09:35

Money makes a helluva difference in health outcomes It doesn't make much difference to CV. Lord Bath has recently died from it.

StoneofDestiny · 06/04/2020 09:44

The fact he lived a highly active life to the age of 87 suggests he was doing ok in financial luxury.

Exoffice · 06/04/2020 09:44

that was a general comment and if someone from the royals needs a ventilator, I am pretty sure they would come before anyone else in case there weren't enough available. People on ventilators still die but it increases your chance.

If you are a royal, you can actually get access to testing on the NHS even with mild symptoms. I have friends who think they have it and are quite ill with it. They cannot get tested, cannot be seen by a GP, nor can they get medical help in any other shape or form despite being quite ill now for over 3 weeks. This would not happen to a royal.

bellinisurge · 06/04/2020 10:31

Money hasn't kept Boris Johnson out of hospital or saved Lord Bath.

dontdisturbmenow · 06/04/2020 10:37

I find her speeches so uninspiring as totally lacking emotions. She reads a script and that's that. However, she is the Queen, and if she didn't do her speeches, people would moan.

Mamamia456 · 06/04/2020 10:50

Don'disturbme - If it's a personal address the Queen writes the speeches herself, all her Christmas speeches are written by her. She will of course run them past other family members, Prince Phillip used to help her, not sure if he's able to now. She will of course also be advised by her aides. Nothing wrong with that, but for the most part they are her own words.

Me too. I can't see what good it will do?“

A lot of very elderly people who might not take kindly to advice to stay home from their younger relatives just may take more notice of her. There’s a lot of respect for her amongst her own generation,

Alsohuman · 06/04/2020 10:53

The fact he lived a highly active life to the age of 87 suggests he was doing ok in financial luxury

My dad played his final round of golf when he was 98, no financial luxury - whatever that means - for him.

sunglasses123 · 06/04/2020 10:56

God - there are some misery guts on these threads. Would you have rather Aunt Mavis who has lived her life on benefits and never worked?

I think she did a fab job. I hope I am like this at 93!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/04/2020 11:03

I also appreciated her speech and thought it was vey good.

DateLoaf · 06/04/2020 11:04

The Queen is doing her job well. Of course she should be talking to us all at a time of national crisis, so she has done. Her speech was positive, forward looking, it rightly showed gratitude to key workers for looking after the rest of us, she rightly thanked the rest of us for staying at home, while recognising that being away from family and friends is very hard for most people. The broadcast was appropriately timed, it will be watched in the Commonwealth countries and beyond.

As the Queen has been around for all our lives for the majority of us living in the UK, she is a meaningful figure in lots of people’s lives.

Importantly, she has given comfort to a lot of people by making her speech. That giving of comfort in itself is an achievement at a time like this. She is helping to mitigate this national crisis in a specific way that only she can do. There’s everything right with doing that.

Whoareyoudududu · 06/04/2020 11:04

Made me laugh personally. Addressing the dying peasants below, like something from the Medieval era.

derxa · 06/04/2020 11:14

The fact he lived a highly active life to the age of 87 suggests he was doing ok in financial luxury. My dad died at 92 and lived like a pauper. The tight-fisted old goat Grin

BubblesBuddy · 06/04/2020 11:18

But many people don’t see it like that so if it makes some people happier right now, that’s ok isn’t it? Many older people are housebound and appreciate what she says. I get lots don’t care but some people do, so let them hear her. Surely we can all appreciate that?

BubblesBuddy · 06/04/2020 11:20

Anyone who plays golf has a bit of money spare! Gold club membership or fees cost money over and above paying for food and bills never mind running a car to get there.

pigsDOfly · 06/04/2020 11:50

Apart from the horses I think she couldn't care less about all of that.

How can you possibly know what she cares or doesn't care about?

If you think wealth like her doesn't bring happiness, peace of mind or good health, you're very naive.

You only have to look at her to see that she's had the best of everything. How many 94 year old women living on a state pension look like her with her untroubled smooth face. She looks like someone with a great deal of peace of mind to me.

And health? You're not going to see her turned away for the umpteenth time for her hip replacement operation because other operations take priority and she's not in enough pain to make it urgent.

Alsohuman · 06/04/2020 11:54

His club gave anyone over 90 free membership. And his friend took him. Having a bit more money than your food and bills come to is hardly untold wealth.

BurneyFanny · 06/04/2020 11:58

So he took up golf aged ninety having never played before ? Well done him.

LivingOnAnIsland · 06/04/2020 12:05

I thought she was great. The people complaining would have complained regardless of what she said, so I don't know why they bothered watching it other than to give themselves something to complain about.

Alsohuman · 06/04/2020 12:06

So he took up golf aged ninety having never played before ? Well done him

He played all his retirement. He was very fit at 98. He wasn’t fabulously wealthy. This isn’t about my dad, it’s about the Queen. I used him as an example to prove that wealth and healthy old age aren’t synonymous.

Exoffice · 06/04/2020 12:08

there will be always poor people who grow very old and rich ones who die young. People will always have examples or know someone who live long despite being piss poor.

but there is statistically a very clear link between life expectancy and wealth. And the gap in the UK is growing .
