Am I the only one who actually couldn’t give a shiny shit what she has to say at this time.

People are dying , everyone is affected so the last thing we need is a rich old woman sitting in her ivory castle asking us to stay calm.

It’s really wound me up, it’s constantly being mentioned on the news!

OP posts:
LaurieMarlow · 05/04/2020 10:11

Well, initially by conquest

See, I don’t understand why someone’s ancestor, hundreds of years ago, having a bigger army and knocking the shit out of the other side, should have any bearing on who rules the UK now.

And that’s not even taking account the less than clear cut decisions over the years as to who’s the rightful heir. Shipping in random Germans and so on.

I could never accept this as an authority to rule.

chomalungma · 05/04/2020 10:13

I notice @CendrillonSings still can't answer the simple question.

If the Monarch of the day uses their undoubted power and influence to go against the wishes of the elected Government and undermine their policy aims, is that a problem?

The obvious example is WW2 and the potential for having a Nazi sympathiser on the throne.

audreysview · 05/04/2020 10:13

The poor woman can't win

She could win if she gave a huge chunk of money to help the doctors and nurses fighting against the odds. Until that happens (which it won’t) no she can’t win.

CendrillonSings · 05/04/2020 10:14

What do think about the possibility that we could have had a Nazi sympathiser on the throne in WW2 and there would have been nothing we could have done about it?

I imagine that if the British Government had hard evidence that the Head of State was a traitor, then he would have been quietly “Epsteined”, to coin a phrase. Not legal, but quite swift and effective.

chomalungma · 05/04/2020 10:14

But like I said, I believe the Monarchy will eat itself. It's far better for something to destroy itself rather than be destroyed.

The actions of some members are already leading to its slow demise.

boli · 05/04/2020 10:15

It's not compulsory to watch or listen to, please yourself

chomalungma · 05/04/2020 10:16

I imagine that if the British Government had hard evidence that the Head of State was a traitor, then he would have been quietly “Epsteined”, to coin a phrase. Not legal, but quite swift and effective

But there could be a lot of support for them.
If only we had a written Constitution with understood rules especially when it comes to the Head of State.

CendrillonSings · 05/04/2020 10:17

Now that I’ve answered your silly question, will you acknowledge my point about manifestos not needing to spell out retention of the status quo? Or will you dodge it because it completely destroys your argument? I think I can guess which one you’ll choose Grin

Noodlenosefraggle · 05/04/2020 10:17

derxa but if the throne hadn't gone to the Hanovers and had instead gone to Bonnie Prince Charlie, would she be Queen? And if the Princes in the Tower hadn't been murdered would she be queen?

so does know what she's talking about when telling us we're in it together.
.
Yes, we are in it together. Everyone is at risk at the moment, rich or poor. Our financial circumstances are not relevant except that those better off can afford to buy expensive things online.

I do not resent the Queen at all for being rich, nor any other rich person. I'm content with my lot. I'm pleased to, so far, not have caught the dreaded virus and hope to stay that way.

chomalungma · 05/04/2020 10:21

Now that I’ve answered your silly question

A silly question about power and influence of an unelected Monarch?

Oh - and your manifesto point is wrong.

You said that it was in the manifesto.

Technically, you should have said that there was no support for abolishing the Monarchy as that was not in a manifesto.

They are 2 different things.

Words matter.

Exoffice · 05/04/2020 10:23

The poor woman can't win

they could have offered their empty palaces (after all, they all flouted government advice and went to their second homes) to the NHS or to house the homeless. Will and Kate could have offered to volunteer at the frontline like a million others - after all they are healthy, unemployed and don't have childcare issues during the day...that would have sent a message across. Not hiding and posing for a few pictures and issuing condescending messages full of platitudes.

They truly made themselves redundant in this crisis (not that there was ever a point of them) but their responses where just shameful. nothing else.

FaFoutis · 05/04/2020 10:23

Apologies if it has been covered, but : What happens about the queen's servants? are they isolating with her and away from their families (like slaves in a pyramid) or is the queen managing without servants?

If she has food (soup, biscuit crumbs) down her top tonight it may be the latter.

CendrillonSings · 05/04/2020 10:24

Technically, you should have said that there was no support for abolishing the Monarchy as that was not in a manifesto.

I’m saying it now. Do you acknowledge it, or will you dodge it pathetically?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 05/04/2020 10:25

King George V was euthenased by his doctors in 1936 so that news of his death would appear in the morning papers rather than the Evening Standard.

The BBC broadcast sombre music all night, punctuated with a repeated statement, "The King's life is drawing peacefully to a close," when he was in fact already dead.

KG5 himself did not go quietly. Very weak, he cursed his doctors as they injected him. His secretary attempted to distract him with his scheduled visit soon to Bognor Regis. "Bugger Bognor!" he barked, and croaked his last.

Crazylately · 05/04/2020 10:27

@CendrillonSings Do you laugh at your own jokes in real life or only online?

chomalungma · 05/04/2020 10:29

I’m saying it now. Do you acknowledge it, or will you dodge it pathetically

Saying it now Grin

CendrillonSings · 05/04/2020 10:29

Do you laugh at your own jokes in real life or only online?

Obviously there’s no sound on MN, so I have to simulate the gales of laughter my jokes receive in real life somehow...

NB That was a joke.

Pelleas · 05/04/2020 10:30

I think people are finally realising that the sentimentality they have for the Royals is meaningless.

It's all very well in normal times to chunter on about what a trooper the dear old Queen is but when it comes to a crisis where she is sitting on wealth and property which could be of huge help to the nation, and has done nothing but swan off to Windsor (against travel rules) to make a five minute speech - at last people are realising how privileged, selfish and useless the Royal Family is.

LaurieMarlow · 05/04/2020 10:30

are they isolating with her and away from their families (like slaves in a pyramid)

I expect so. She’s not doing without servants, now is she?

CendrillonSings · 05/04/2020 10:31

chomalungma

Oh dear, looks like you’ve lost the argument quite comprehensively - there’s no democratic support for abolishing the monarchy.

It must be tiring to lose, lose, and lose again on every political issue you care about! Grin

BubblesBuddy · 05/04/2020 10:32

Why cannot we just be happy that some people will want to hear her? It’s such a small amount of time and we could go back to bickering afterwards?

Crazylately · 05/04/2020 10:32

You are incredibly skilled at dodging questions, you must be an MP, a solicitor or an estate agent or something of that ilk.

chomalungma · 05/04/2020 10:34

Oh dear, looks like you’ve lost the argument quite comprehensively - there’s no democratic support for abolishing the monarchy

Oh,, you've got me. Completely demolished. Well played. Couldn't have done it better myself....

But like I said - the Monarchy is effectively destroying itself. It doesn't need democracy to do that. It is capable of doing it to itself - and that's the best way, personally.

Crazylately · 05/04/2020 10:34

That was to CendrillonSings btw who is still laughing ... albeit alone.
