To create a cheeseboard for our "date night" ?

fairnessshairmess · 03/04/2020 18:37

Dh and I are having a "date night" once dc have gone to bed and I'm putting together a cheeseboard. So I got everything today when I was shopping.
6 different cheeses, crackers, fruits, nuts, chilli jam, fig jam, and then I also got some meats for the side. Salami, pastrami etc

I was on the phone to my sister, who said and I quote "isn't that a bit excessive given the current situation?!"

Aibu to think we can still enjoy our fave foods/dishes if I can find them!? ConfusedHmm

It sounds like a lovely idea. Maybe your sister is finding times hard.

What’s the current situation got to with food usage Hmm. We don’t have a shortage of food.

It’s like those OTT posters who say you can’t have a BBQ as Clovis-19 is a respiratory illness Hmm

1300cakes · 03/04/2020 18:47

Yum! There isn't a shortage of food, especially not of these items. Now a pasta and loo roll board might be rubbing it in.

I think people are getting confused with the ‘only buy the essentials’ thing.
I saw a woman the other day boasting on social media that her nails were a mess as she hadn’t bought nail varnish remover as it wasn’t an essential Confused.
Could your sister be getting confused between making sure there’s enough basics to go around aka ‘the essentials’ and not being able to buy anything but the essentials?

iklboo · 03/04/2020 18:48

What does your sister wash her hair shirt in? Enjoy your evening OP.

Windyatthebeach · 03/04/2020 18:49

Whatever it takes maintain a decent relationship at this time is great imo!!

BuffaloCauliflower · 03/04/2020 18:50

Sounds ideal! Ignore your silly sister and have a great night

Seetheprettysnowdrops · 03/04/2020 18:53

Sounds lovely.

There are no food shortages. I'm having snacks later. And wine.

hadenough · 03/04/2020 18:55

Of course it's not unreasonable.

The only thing I have 'enjoyed' about this period is that I have more time to cook without feeling guilty about trying new things, or taking my time over it.

I've tried various chicken dishes, paellas etc and tonight will be doing some homemade onion rings, chicken goujons and some fish and chips.

I8toys · 03/04/2020 18:56

I'm disappointed you don't have honey.

After holidaying in Italy many times, my ds2 came downstairs and demanded crackers, cheese and honey the other night!! Smile

sunshineandshowers21 · 03/04/2020 18:56

of course you can still enjoy your favourite treats. being in lockdown doesn’t mean you should survive on basics - it’s not prison! my lovely sister today dropped me a bag of goodies off on my doorstep because i’ve been a bit down. yes easter eggs, cookies, pick and mix and milkshake aren’t essential - but i’ll bloody well still enjoy them (when the kids are asleep so i don’t have to share!)

AwkwardPaws27 · 03/04/2020 18:59

We don't need to only buy the essentials. We need to only make essential shopping trips. Big difference. Try to only make one trip to the shop a week / fortnight, only visit one shop if possible (+ a pharmacy if you need medications). Buy enough for your family but don't hoard.
For the example above, obviously don't go out specifically for nail varnish, but I can't see the harm in picking some up in a supermarket if you are there for other stuff.

Ohtherewearethen · 03/04/2020 19:00

I really don't understand why some people seem to think we all need to be eating just spuds and spam all of a sudden. There isn't a food shortage, our food habits really don't need to change (flinging the stink eye towards all the panic buyers). It really is a bit ridiculous. This is probably why there was no pasta, bread, beans, etc, because people who don't normally buy them started buying them like mad because they think that's all they're allowed to eat!
Your cheeseboard sounds amazing, enjoy every bite! I hate having dinner envy!

AwkwardPaws27 · 03/04/2020 19:02

I bought three packs of hot cross buns in Aldi, with the rest of my shopping - they had all different flavours, all half price as about to go out of date. Frivolous, yes, but I was in the bread aisle anyway. I put some in the freezer, and they are a nice treat. Why not?

Travis1 · 03/04/2020 19:04

That sounds delicious I am jealous!

Wineislifex · 03/04/2020 19:06

Sounds delightful with a nice bottle of vino and maybe some fresh crusty bread 😍

iklboo · 03/04/2020 19:06

I've got some mini cheeses in, some Boursin etc. Unnaturally excited that our cheese shop is opening again tomorrow for delivery orders. There goes about £20!

user1493413286 · 03/04/2020 19:06

Her reaction is odd; if you’d had to go to 6 shops for all those things then yes excessive but we need to get our enjoyment how we can in this current situation

Samtsirch · 03/04/2020 19:08

That sounds lovely and very romantic 🥰
I would copy the idea myself but we’d only end up fighting over the cheese, lol.

msmith501 · 03/04/2020 19:08

You need celery, apple and grapes. Sounds lovely. Actually I'd get some nice pate as well. We all need small treats at the moment to provide some sense of normality and sanity. Enjoy 😀

Samtsirch · 03/04/2020 19:09

As in, I hate to share my cheese 😊

checkingforballoons · 03/04/2020 19:12

I thought most people would be adding extra treats to their food shop if they’re able to! Having a drink or a bit of chocolate at the end of the day is keeping my spirits up at the moment.

limpingparrot · 03/04/2020 19:13

Thanks for the good idea for confined date night :)

onanothertrain · 03/04/2020 19:20

I think that sounds lovely, I'm planning on doing an online order for a local cheesemonger for Easter weekend. My OH has also suggested we get dressed up for dinner tomorrow night and open the expensive bottle of red we've been saving
