Admittedly it’s only on our local WhatsApp group...

Opened it this morning and there’s a message from a ‘founder’ member of the group.

“Me, hubs and the kids were out last night making lots of noise for our NHS heroes. Disappointed to see that some of this group don’t care enough to give up 2 minutes of their time!!! Maybe you forgot..(then a list of names including mine). Will be sending you a reminder next week!!”

I know she’s a twat but I’m fuming. I’m not going to dignify it with a reply because she and her little crew of followers love a public war. I’m just going to ignore her but if she thinks she’s forcing me out next week she’s got another bloody think coming.

Tbh if I wasn’t on lockdown I wouldn’t even give it 2 thoughts but I’m winding myself up about it now!

AIBU to think that clapping is not compulsory and nobody else’s business?

If you really cared you'd slaughter a goat.

riceuten · 03/04/2020 18:20

Yes, my road as well, though I wasn't listed.

I know for a fact that almost all these morons voted for either the Brexit Party or the Tories and despise immigrants, so frankly, criticism from small minded bigots is like water off a duck's back

rosamacrose · 03/04/2020 18:23

I wonder how many of the virtue signalling clapper bullies will be so ferocious when we come out the other side of this.

When the government continue to dismantle the NHS.

Will they be shouting out and banging pans then?

My bet is, they'll turn away and hush right down.

PixieBigShoes · 03/04/2020 18:34

If people are forced to show there appreciation then it doesn't really mean anything. I feel the same about people (footballers etc) being forced to wear poppies. The whole point of it is the sheer number of people showing how much the key workers mean to them, not that they want to impress the neighbours with how nice they are.

DarnedSocks · 03/04/2020 18:43

I don't see how it helps social distancing particularly for people living in flats who need to use the same hallways to get out to the street...

So many people will be unwell, whether Covid or something else, or caring for an unwell household member, or feeding a hungry baby or dealing with any number of reasons they're unable to go outside to clap. It's a nice gesture for those who want to do it but there's plenty of other less visible ways people can show their appreciation and support.

nuttymomma · 03/04/2020 18:44

me and DD clap but DH refuses to because he's a key worker and no one is clapping for him. Plus he reckons people will give up pretty quickly as this lockdown is going to take months.

IsabelleSE19 · 03/04/2020 18:50

If you really cared you'd slaughter a goat.**

Agamemnon, is that you?

Abraid2 · 03/04/2020 18:56

Busted.

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 03/04/2020 19:01

What effing difference is clapping doing for these workers? Fuck all. They're still being put at the front of this pandemic with inappropriate personal protective equipment. They know they are going to contract it. They know colleagues they work along side will die. What fucking good is clapping doing for them? It's the most patronising act possible.

A once off national moment meant something, maybe. Making it a weekly thing and turning it into a competition is just ridiculous. It's now about who's seen to be clapping, not about any form of appreciation or understanding for what these workers are facing on a daily basis.

And as for this latest one, shine a torch into the sky.

Fuck off.

Rant over.

thetemptationofchocolate · 03/04/2020 19:16

Maybe instead of clapping we should instead (those of us who wish to that is) shout PPE. It would be like a protest march, only spread out.

Cismyfatarse1 · 03/04/2020 19:18

Once upon a time giving someone the clap was nothing to be proud of.

Figmentofmyimagination · 03/04/2020 19:33

It does remind me of vaclav havel’s grocer and his sign - ‘workers of the world unite’. There’s a good article about this in the FT from 2011 -

@Nanny0gg
By the way, where the buggery are people getting fireworks from?

Fucking stockpilers.

iamjustlurking · 03/04/2020 19:38

Not read whole thread as not got energy I'm NHS obviously still working but even I'm over it .
Was incredibly moved last week amazed and heart warmed at appreciation shown but really every week?
👏 to everyone still having to go out to work right now

cstaff · 03/04/2020 19:41

@Cismyfatarse
Loving your post about getting the clap.I was thinking the same earlier Grin

Michaelbaubles · 03/04/2020 19:46

It’s interesting that we’ve been told repeatedly we’re two weeks behind Italy - a couple of weeks ago a friend living in Venice told us people had “started denouncing their neighbours”. Sounded far fetched then but not now.

BootShakin · 03/04/2020 19:51

*Maybe instead of clapping we should instead (those of us who wish to that is) shout PPE"

It's just going to sound like Peeeee... Peeeeee.... Peeeee..

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 03/04/2020 19:52

We didn't go out and clap either week as I don't see any reason to do it, I say this as an ex-nurse married to a senior nurse.

It would be far, far better to thank the NHS by not voting in governments who underfund it and plan to dismantle.

If there was to be a 'Two fingers up to the Tories' or 'Bare your arse to Boris' I might consider taking part...

Oneliner · 03/04/2020 20:08

You're not allowed to clap if you voted Tory.

CalamityShame · 03/04/2020 20:12

Yes, change the bloody clapping to yelling 'GIVE KEY WORKERS PPE!'

Might still be as ineffective as clapping but it sends a clearer message...

Cuddling57 · 03/04/2020 20:14

Instead of clapping if everyone that could donate £1 or £10 to a charity that would be far more expensive beneficial.

Cuddling57 · 03/04/2020 20:14

Not sure why I typed expensive! Ignore that bit!

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 03/04/2020 20:24

Perhaps it would be more appreciated by sleep deprived essential workers if we all just stood on our doorsteps and held a 2 minute silence. We could still use it as an opportunity to smile and wave at the neighbours afterwards.

At the very least we should refrain from blowing whistles, sounding air horns, letting off fireworks and wailing like banshees.

Queeftastic · 03/04/2020 20:34

FFS, I keep hearing this sort of silly and intrusive behaviour. Some great responses above.

RedPanda2 · 03/04/2020 20:38

Oh god I bet she has a 'Live, Laugh, Love' sign and family canvasses in her home!
