and to make DH wear one to work? With a mask on underneath obviously. Do you think it’ll catch on?

Not lighthearted. Deadly serious.

Erm yeah, go ahead! 🧐

Hannah021 · 02/04/2020 23:20

I wouldn't wear it, yet I wouldn't frown on it... do what makes you comfortable

glueandstick · 02/04/2020 23:25

Loads of people are in China. Seems sensible to me.

Defenbaker · 02/04/2020 23:28

YANBU, wear whatever protection you want to, it can't do any harm and may help keep you safe (but you'd still need to keep a safe distance and wash hands when you return home).

Also, when removing the mask after use, be aware that it could be quite germ ridden, so you probably need to wash/wipe it down regularly, just in case.

I just started a thread about a man who coughed his way around the supermarket today, so YADNBU.

AmelieTaylor · 02/04/2020 23:29

Oh that’s quite stylee!

I have one of these. With a pair of safety goggles.

Not quite so stylish

The very easiest thing to take care of and wash is you. How are you going to ensure that equipment is going to be safe to use again? Removing it will be difficult and may cross contaminate things.
When you're out, touch things only with your hands. Come home and wash them. Wash them after you've unloaded and unpacked. Wash the things you've bought if it makes you feel better. Change clothes and shower if it makes you feel better. But by far and away the easiest surface to clean this virus from is your own skin.

JustCantShakeIt · 02/04/2020 23:37

Yes Glue. It’s also more normal for them after SARS. Wondering if that could be the reason China seems to have its community transmission under control at the moment?

There are mixed messages in the UK about masks. I can’t see how they wouldn’t at least prevent infected people’s, (who don’t know they’re infected due to lack of testing!) breath and saliva flying off into the atmosphere.

When are we going to cop onHmm. We should be mass producing the things here surely.

I don’t need to be reminded to wash my hands but thanks!

Well it might not be here til 3rd June, so I think that defeats the purpose unless neither of you go out til then

raydeeo · 02/04/2020 23:42

I wasn't reminding you. If you're looking at these I am sure you already do, a lot! I'm just saying that reusing any form of PPE comes with a it's own set of hazards and is far more difficult to manage that just cleaning the skin you already have.

Cillmantain · 02/04/2020 23:47

Wear it if it makes you feel better.
However taking if off will be the problem.
It will be covered in all sorts and that's a bigger problem.
How will you clean the hat part
Easier to possibly wear a scarf and put in washing machine as soon as you get home.

Sh05 · 02/04/2020 23:51

If you look at theost recent articles, I think the face mask is the next recommendation on the government's list
So maintain the two metre distance but also wear a mask.

EndIsNigh · 02/04/2020 23:51

I've just ordered two N95 masks for me and DH. Couple of weeks ago I felt a bit weird wearing plastic gloves but not now.
DH is recovering from cancer treatment. Can't be too careful. If I saw you OP, quite frankly wouldn't bat an eyelid now.

heartsonacake · 02/04/2020 23:59

YABU, and China does not have anything under control. They’re lying.

buckeejit · 03/04/2020 00:03

If you took the potentially germ ridden mask off in the car & left it there for a week, then would it be ok?

EileenAlanna · 03/04/2020 00:20

It's perfectly sensible & I'm sure you'd be taking all necessary steps to keep it properly cleaned. I've been wearing a mask for weeks, felt a bit self-conscious at first but that passed quickly.

Evilspiritgin · 03/04/2020 00:22

Those masks do bugger all, the only people they would help are people with a virus

Kingcole · 03/04/2020 00:22

I am making one out of a miele vacuum bag for my whole family yadnbu

Kingcole · 03/04/2020 00:23

They are washable so straight into wash.

FunkyKingston · 03/04/2020 00:44

I wonder, how are you going to make your husband wear this to work? He'd be a laughing stock for no tangible safety benefit as outlined above. If my partner tried to make me wear this contraption, I'd say 'yes love, of course' and dump it in my work bag never to see the light of day again.

FunkyKingston · 03/04/2020 00:46

I saw a mask on the dashboard of my neighbour's car, covered in receipts, pens and sweets. It sure ain't going to do her any good after a few days mouldering in there.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 03/04/2020 01:14

I bought a neoprene cycle mask earlier in the year, anticipating the virus, but I've not used it yet because of the differing opinions of benefits or not of masks.
Cycle Mask this sort of thing (but an attractive khaki camouflage pattern Blush )

Because of concerns about germs living on the fabric, I was considering using it, but lining it with kitchen towel that I could throw away after using. What do you think?

Luci459 · 03/04/2020 01:16

Omg

Oxo01 · 03/04/2020 01:20

I saw them on the news where children was wearing them on the beach abroad, i bought 2 weeks ago but children's ones they are better than I expected, but they have not been used as they have to stay inside due to high risk health issues.
The face bit attaches onto the sun hat by velcro and sticks well. The hat and cover can be washed / wiped and dryed. I've seen so many different things being worn by people in my locality I wouldn't be surprised if these catch on with more people if other things have are not available.
I told my O/H I'll get our full face snorkeles out of the garage and he can wear one to travel to work, you can guess what his reply was !!!
