and to make DH wear one to work? With a mask on underneath obviously. Do you think it’ll catch on?

Not lighthearted. Deadly serious.

@FunkyKingston - reminds me of a street market stall I passed a couple of weeks ago; the guy setting it up was smoking a cigarette, taking masks out of a box and tying them individually on to the top of his stall, flapping around his head, they must have been very bug ridden by the time he untied them, handled some cash and passed them over. Confused

YABU, and China does not have anything under control. They’re lying.

What are you basing this on? What do you think they are lying about? Do you think our government are lying?

I'll tell you what they are doing in china. Putting anyone flying into the country in quarantine and not releasing them unless they are symptom free after 14 days. They are doing more to protect their citizens than the uk is.

myfav · 03/04/2020 05:48

My opinion is a mask cannot do any harm as long you know how to wear and remove it safely. Hands need to be washed before and after it is removed. The one you linked is sold out but assuming you get similar the plastic visor would need bleach and the fabric hat in a hot wash. Then wipe down controls of the washing machine. My impression was that they weren't recommending them yet as people in the UK are not used to wear one abs therefore they may fiddle around with it on their face thus bringing their potential unclean hands in close proximity with their eyes and mouth. Obviously other non mask wearing nations have started wearing masks regardless of this.

Ponoka7 · 03/04/2020 06:58

@wafflyversatile, have you Googled China Coronavirus lately?

They seal off districts, knock on doors every 4 days and whoever is dead, is dead. There's been children left with dead relatives for days.

Granted our government didn't publish our first death, in February from the virus and our record gathering made it look like we'd only had half the deaths a day that we had. But that was admin issues, which the new act will overcome.

@EveryDayIsADuvetDay, it will lessen the chance of you spreading the virus, but not protect you. It can still go in via your eyes. For a, mask to work it needs to be tight fitting.

OP wear what you want, but you can't dictate to your DH what he wears. For people to wear them all day in work, you'll need two, for when you eat/drink. But they aren't going to be comfortable. Especially during summer.

Reginabambina · 03/04/2020 07:05

The medical style masks are extremely uncomfortable. I’d sooner wear a visor but I’m not sure how useful it would be in preventing my germs escaping.

Reginabambina · 03/04/2020 07:06

@wafflyversatile I really don’t think they’re doing it to protect their citizens.

Downunderduchess · 03/04/2020 07:47

I’m in Australia, I just ordered two washable face masks online last night. Picture attached of one. I never thought I would wear something like that, but I’m coming around to the idea.

Sorry if I am being thick, I'm not remotely scientific but if you had a mask, wore it & it became infected. If you left that mask in the car for a week, would it still pose a problem if you used it again? Obv as long as you didn't touch your face etc while wearing. I thought it didn't live for more than a few days on fabric?

Downunderduchess · 03/04/2020 09:01

I would be wearing it as an extra way to avoid contamination, the ones I ordered are washable so I imagine a cycle through the washing machine would suffice.

wafflyversatile · 03/04/2020 09:03

@Reginabambina well my friend who lives there and has just been through it feels much safer and more protected than she did here where they did precisely nothing when she landed here. So I'll take that over your chinny reckon.

wafflyversatile · 03/04/2020 09:06

@Ponoka7 if you think the only problem with our government is a slight admin issue maybe you should do some googling.

IckyIsAFuckingStupidWord · 03/04/2020 09:06

You can’t make your husband do anything!

Reginabambina · 03/04/2020 11:24

@wafflyversatile they literally kill their citizens over there, it’s not done with the intention of protecting them, I promise you few fucks are given about human life over there. I’m glad that your friend feels safer but it’s not a reflection on the government’s paternalism.

Reginabambina · 03/04/2020 11:25

@Downunderduchess have you worn it? How does it feel?

differentnameforthis · 03/04/2020 12:12

EVERY single person (members of the public) I have seen wearing gloves and a mask are using them incorrectly.

Right from the people shopping in supermarkets, to the people behind the tills, to the bank cashier today, even the bakery people, to the man shoving his gloved hand down his pants, to the lady walking around holding her phone to her face, even m y dh.

Putting them on, utilizing them while wearing and taking them off..one way or another they have ALL somehow failed at cross infection control.

If you are not practicing correct cross infection control YOUR MASK AND GLOVES ARE USELESS.

If you want to use them right, learn about infection control (not from a "hack" on YouTube, either) and use them right, otherwise all you are doing is wasting precious PPE for those who need it.

iheartislesofwight · 03/04/2020 12:17

no way would i wear this and certainly not if my dh said i had to he could go and do one !

Sloff · 03/04/2020 12:46

I am going to get one of these

Downunderduchess · 03/04/2020 23:59

@Reginabambina I’ve not received them yet, just ordered online recently.

PhilCornwall1 · 04/04/2020 07:29

@JustCantShakeIt I'm just wondering how you are going to make your husband wear this to be honest. What's the follow up from you if he tells you to jump on your bike?

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 14/04/2020 18:32

Mine just arrived - red hat with a visor
Comfier than a mask - just opened the packet and it's a bit smelly and the plastic squidged, hopefully it will smooth out and lose the odour!

Bit restrictive (my neck is not as long as the dummy in the picture!), but hopefully it will stop me touching my face when I'm wearing it.
Good suggestion @JustCantShakeIt
