To think the talk of so many NHS clappers is mostly down and out lies?

I missed it last time but gave it the benefit of the doubt. Until Tonight. I listened closely outside at 8 and did not hear a single clap in my area. Also, on Channel 4 news it was showing people clapping and it was literally only a few people clapping, very unenthusiastically and slowly and even sarcastically, I hasten to add. I’m not saying it’s not a “thing” but to claim it’s all “up and down the country” no it’s not, loads of people don’t give a damn. I wonder at all the stories shared by MNers about entire streets coming out to clap and wonder where they live where this happens as everyone that replies seem to agree

OP posts:
We3kingsoforientareandabump · 02/04/2020 22:26

We had clapping, cheering, whistles, fireworks and ships blowing their horns.

HooplaHoopla · 02/04/2020 22:27

We live on the edge of an expensive area with some fairly posh, well educated and refined sorts, and there definitely was applause, and fireworks, and stamping of feet etc. Even the posh people did it. Smile

MadameBee I object to being called ' an utter grump ' just because I choose not to join in as I personally dont see the point of it, totally cringeworthy in my opinion. Their choice to do it, my choice not to do it . How on earth are the clappers 'doing something' by standing in their street making a loud noise ? If anybody were to stand in the street round here clapping, shouting and banging a pan I would expect somebody would be calling for medical assistance. Baffles me. If they want to do something they can , if able, go volunteer or whatever.

chocolicious · 02/04/2020 22:34

Loads of people in my street out in their front garden or at an open window.
A near neighbour is a charge nurse and got a cheer when she came outside to join in.A few people in our street work for the NHS.

mummymayhem18 · 02/04/2020 22:36

I forgot last week as got engrossed in a film with my husband and then heard lots of noise and realised what it was. Felt really bad that I had forgotten about it. So this week all 3 in our house were upstairs in the front bedroom windows opened and clapping. I could see at least 8 other houses from my window joining in. I understand that some people are still appreciative of the NHS but don't want to go out and join in and I agree fireworks are a bit much. But to the few miserable buggers that moan about it either on here or to other people.."Get a life". I'm sure you use the NHS services and we are very lucky to have free healthcare so get over yourselves and find other things to moan about whilst your safely tucked up in your home.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 02/04/2020 22:37

I live in a very rural very middle class area. We went out and had a clap tonight plus a couple of drinks many many metres apart. Friends from up the road joined us and most happily, some lovely neighbours who are now recovered from a 2 week bout of Covid 19.

Public cheering is definitely not my normal thing but I felt moved and part of a bigger picture. From our tiny hamlet I could hear cheers from up the road.

GiantKitten · 02/04/2020 22:37

Loads of clapping, cheering & whistles here (small town, Lancs)

I didn't join in, but only because I'm too repressed. I did video it out the back though, & DH joined in at the front Smile

ChickLitLover · 02/04/2020 22:45

we are very lucky to have free healthcare

It’s not free though. It’s paid for by tax. And we all need to pay more tax. Most people moan they pay too much, I hope all these clappers remember this when taxes are hopefully put up after this all settles down. Unfortunately people have short memories and aren’t so keen when it means paying more, not just clapping, banging a saucepan, playing bagpipes or setting off awful bloody fireworks.

HooplaHoopla · 02/04/2020 22:46

Neveranynames well possibly there is someone in the local area who is a key worker/NHS and appreciates the gesture?

Also it is one way (the only way really) that anyone can be a part of a community event without it compromising health, and seeing as we are all on lockdown without any community events, classes or places open from libraries, coffee shops, schools, parks, gyms and places of worship, it probably means a lot not just to those who are the key workers it is intended for but also people who are shielding, vulnerable or self isolating for 7 or 14 days and might be going for days without hearing or seeing anybody else in their local area. Just hearing the community is still there could mean a lot to someone. You don't know.

Scbchl · 02/04/2020 22:47

They 100% have in my area in South Ayrshire in Scoand. Everyone was out, someone was playing bagpipes. Loads of videos on fb of folk in our towns streets all out cheering, whistling, someone was singing on a karaoke 😂

HooplaHoopla · 02/04/2020 22:50

Chicklit Are you saying the NHS and key workers shouldn't be shown appreciation for the fight they are putting in on all our behalf by way of public applause, because in the future the taxes might go up!? Really?!

MarshaBradyo · 02/04/2020 22:51

SE London pretty much whole street

BramwellBrown · 02/04/2020 22:51

Where I live it was really loud last week, loud enough that I heard it indoors over the tv but I live in a block of flats, with quite a lot of other blocks of flats round us, so lots of people squashed into a relatively small area, standing on balconies that overlook the courtyard which echos anyway, it would probably have sounded far less impressive spread out between houses.

This week I didn't hear a thing.

YesILikeItToo · 02/04/2020 22:51

I took wooden spoons out last time because I thought more noise would be needed, but not at all - didn’t bother tonight, there was plenty of noise with clapping alone.

morriseysquif · 02/04/2020 22:52

Well if everybody thought like you OP and didn't want to clap in case they were on their own then nobody would be out at all.

Just go out next week anyway!

StarUtopia · 02/04/2020 22:53

Loads clapping down my road (north west)

Mumshappy · 02/04/2020 22:56

Lancashire. You can hear the whole area. Fireworks, cheering, whistling and clapping.

ChickLitLover · 02/04/2020 23:00

HooplaHoopla

No, I’m not saying that at all. Try reading my post again.

I’m simply saying that I hope that people don’t have an issue with taxes being higher. Every single ‘clapper’ I know doesn’t want to pay more tax. The Tory wankers in my road think they should pay less. 🙄 I think the clapping is a waste of time, as do the nurses I know BUT that’s besides the point. The point is, to fund the NHS properly in terms of equipment and staff, we all need to be prepared to pay more in, not just bang a saucepan. Doctors and Nurses deserve more pay, that would mean a lot to those who are shattered and not paid their worth. It would mean my nurse friend isn’t struggling every month to make ends meet and thinking of leaving nursing, not because she wants to, but because the pay is shit for what’s expected of her.

justasking111 · 02/04/2020 23:01

North Wales loads out clapping, whistling, pans being hit, more than last week, it echoed around the whole area. Maybe us welshies are less buttoned up. All our hospitals did it too all over facebook.

FedupwithCFs · 02/04/2020 23:01

Tbh I was more clapping for the supermarket and other workers this week.

CaptainNelson · 02/04/2020 23:03

You might want to read this: theconversation.com/coronavirus-why-clapping-for-carers-feels-so-strangely-uplifting-135092
There's also arguments that the singing in Italy has helped people endure the lockdown. There's no doubt that the clapping is as much for the people doing it as it is for the NHS, but the NHS workers I know are deeply touched by it. Both of which are enough justification for me. Plus the fact that it really annoys my teenagers...

OohIsThatAFlake · 02/04/2020 23:03

Lots of people out clapping in Douglas, Isle of Man, and a guy from the local paper took my picture!

tactum · 02/04/2020 23:06

Loads clapping in our village. Whooping and clanging of pans. FB full of people feeling its helping

LadyHooHa · 02/04/2020 23:08

Not a single clap (or anything else) to be heard where I live, OP. There wasn't last week, either. However, I don't think it's a lie. I think it just depends on your location.

cloudspotter · 02/04/2020 23:09

YABU. In our area (suburban not urban) there was a wave of sound coming towards us as people started clapping, whistling, banging pans.

That's pretty usual from talking to friends and family.

As for all the bellyaching about resenting people who voted Tory etc, I think this needs to be seen for what it is.

It's a spontaneous act of recognition, acknowledgement and gratitude towards people that are going into a workplace that must be stressful and terrifying at the moment.

For once not political, not partisan, just acknowledgement of everyday people showing heroism.
