Sudden odd smells

The other day I was driving to work and could smell sesame oil for no reason. Just now I noticed a really sweet flowery smell but I'm indoors with only a spider plant and bromeliad nearby so it's not those.
Does anybody else get this ? It's weird, aibu to think I'm imagining things.

I got this a few days before covid symptoms started

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 02/04/2020 15:01

At least you havent lost your sense of smell

Thelnebriati · 02/04/2020 15:06

Do you get migraines at all?

UnfinishedSymphon · 02/04/2020 15:21

I keep getting a bleach smell, we don't use bleach

cornflakegirl · 02/04/2020 15:25

Adam Rutherford said the hypersensitivity to smell was a symptom for him.

Lozz22 · 02/04/2020 15:27

Pregnant? My sense of smell changed drastically when I was Pregnant. It was one of the first tell tale signs that I was

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 02/04/2020 15:30

Probably wafting in the windows from everyone bleaching their shopping.

Wannabangbang · 02/04/2020 15:32

Pregnancy? I had enhanced sense of smell with all pregnancies, i could smell like a blood hound

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 02/04/2020 15:33

I wouldn't automatically put it down to Covid. There have been many threads about "imagined" smells before this all kicked off.

SerenDippitty · 02/04/2020 15:33

Oh no I'm terrified now. Smelt a marzipanny sort of smell in the bathroom yesterday! I'm definitely not pregnant - late 50s!

emmielia · 02/04/2020 15:37

I had this yesterday followed by a migraine a few hours later.

YouTheCat · 02/04/2020 15:39

I have a hypersensitive sense of smell anyway. And my hearing is very sensitive to very high frequency sounds (like sonic cat scarers etc).

I'm like some kind of frumpy superhero.

Haffiana · 02/04/2020 15:41

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/04/2020 15:44

Maybe you're being haunted?!

bitchonthepitch · 02/04/2020 16:18

There's no way I'm pregnant and I don't get migraines. I'm ignoring the possibility of Covid as I first noticed it about 10-11 days ago and my anxiety is bad enough about catching that.
I guess it's just one of those weird things.

I had similar before I had an sinus infection. It was a particular smell and taste. I kept saying thing were gone off. Then chills and fever came a day or so after.
Still assuming it was sinus infection rather than Covid as my glands were all swollen.

GinnyStrupac · 02/04/2020 16:23

A virus, not necessarily the virus is a likely cause.

I get smoke. I don't smoke and nobody around me smokes.

AmelieTaylor · 02/04/2020 16:24

@bitchonthepitch

I get this. Have for months, if not longer. It was driving me a bit nuts before Covid turned up, no it’s not bothering me at all. I’m just going with the oddness 🤪

ofWarren is a lovely, sensible, MNer too though, so I wouldn’t discount the idea of it being an early Covid symptom - be as prepared as you can be

tothesea · 02/04/2020 16:28

I get this sometimes but unfortunately it’s the smell of dog shit. No dog in the house!

GinnyStrupac · 02/04/2020 16:31

I hate smoke too!

Not relevant with me, but I seem to remember it can also sit alongside OCD.

bitchonthepitch · 02/04/2020 16:32

I'm carrying on with my head in the sand with that one...I'm sure ofWarren is lovely and sensible but I'm not going there.

OlaEliza · 02/04/2020 16:35

Maybe it's the lack of pollution. Smells are getting clearer and carrying further maybe.

RandomLondoner · 02/04/2020 16:35

I've been smelling something that isn't there for a couple of months. My first thought (before I realised there wasn't an external cause) was that my boiler flue was faulty and linking fumes into the house.

It's most noticeable when sitting still at my desk or lying on the couch watching TV.

Google says phantom smells is a medical condition, forget the name, and it'll probably go away on its own.

I've noticed it slightly less recently.

Definitely not pregnant. Don't think it's Covid.

ofwarren · 02/04/2020 16:35

@bitchonthepitch
I think it's been too long for it to be covid. I started really quickly after that symptom.
I'm sure it's nothing bad, just one of those things.

bitchonthepitch · 02/04/2020 16:36

Anosmia (loss of smell) is down as a symptom of Covid according to the NHS, perhaps that's what OfWarren is thinking of.
