Sudden odd smells

bitchonthepitch · 02/04/2020 15:00

The other day I was driving to work and could smell sesame oil for no reason. Just now I noticed a really sweet flowery smell but I'm indoors with only a spider plant and bromeliad nearby so it's not those.
Does anybody else get this ? It's weird, aibu to think I'm imagining things.

Thanks for the reassurance @ofWarren, I hope you're OK.

You don't need to go there, OP. Many who are tested for Covid-19 because they seem to have it actually test negative. The only way to know for sure is to be tested, which is unlikely right now even for frontline NHS staff and I'm looking at you, Boris

@ofwarren is OK.
She has kittens Grin

GinnyStrupac · 02/04/2020 16:49

Ok, we all need to see those kittens now.

Now you're teasing us!

One big old guy here. Can certainly smell him* sometimes - definitely not my imagination or a virus!

I've been getting this too, but with farts. Thought I was imagining it as I certainly wasn't farting.

Turns out that eating a lot of bean-based dishes recently has been too much for the gastro-intestinal functions of the other 3 members of my family (all of whom are male) and the dog has decided to fart up a storm as well for some reason. Combine that with being indoors most the time...! GrinEnvy

GinnyStrupac · 02/04/2020 17:23

It sounds like you need to follow PHE advice more than most to open windows and get those males and Ddog out for daily walks!

FanSpamTastic · 02/04/2020 18:43

I think it's down to the reduction in pollution. I went for a walk last night and could smell the bark on the trees we were walking past. It reminded me of how you used to notice nature smells back in the 70s. Different smells of hedges, trees and the spring flowers.

Wannabangbang · 02/04/2020 19:26

Oh my 😍those kittens

Dita73 · 02/04/2020 21:02

For what it’s worth, this happens to me all the time and has done for years. My daughter gets it too. No idea what causes it but I wouldn’t worry

I get sinus infections and this is always an early symptom for me. Try doing a saltwater sinus rinse for a couple of days to help.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/04/2020 21:39

I was getting a burnt plastic smell . Not just in my house , but at work, in the garden too.
Of course no-one else could smell it.
Now ..no sign !

GinnyStrupac · 03/04/2020 09:16

Thanks for the paw-nography, @ofwarren - I couldn't see the photos yesterday for some reason but they've just popped up to cheer me up on this strange Friday morning. The one with the little moustache is definitely Kitler in my mind. Two reminded me very much of my cats now loved and lost. Smile

Medical advice from one kind pp, a big laugh from another and kitten photos from another. Great thread just now - hope you're ok, OP.

Possibly thanks to this thread I seem also to have become hyper aware of more smells. Luckily the farts seem to have died down but today I'm getting significant whiffs of:

  • that weird sour smell you sometimes smell when clothes stay in the washing machine too long - it seems to be the palms of my hands?? Even though I am washing my hands so frequently and the hand towel doesn't smell either.
  • a kind of smell like fenugreek - I remember smelling like this when I was breastfeeding and drinking a lot of tea to help milk supply, but I don't know why I smell like that now, I'm washing daily and wearing clean clothes and deodorant
  • all the smells in the house seem much more amplified. Outside in the garden too I can smell the earth really strongly. DS2 is eating apples and peanut butter in another room and I can smell the peanut butter.

We live near the M4 and under the Heathrow flight path so I'm wondering if this is a direct result of reduced air pollution in our area now that traffic and flights are massively reduced.
