To feel nothings left for average families

I fully support the vunerable and elderly getting special times to shop and think it's great that some supermarkets have kept slots for them. But.... Is anyone else feeling like it's a catch 22 for families? Especially ones with kids.

I have managed to get one slot in April through Asda. It was pure luck! I have children aged 2 and 4. My partner's still working all week and he's worried about catching this virus like the rest of us. We are trying to stay home because I'm anemic and don't know how dangerous it would be as I've been quite poorly. It's not recognised as a huge problem but I've read that we don't have enough red blood cells. (I've made another post on this)

Anyway I've just been on Asda to try add a couple of things on and see how much is now out of stock. It says I'm not allowed to amend until 2 days before it's delivered now. Fair enough. But for god's sake.

I've been on Iceland this morning and they put up a bright red warning that if I'm not elderly or vunerable there are no slots.

Morrisons said they have no slots at all anywhere.

Sainsbury's the same.

Tesco's the same.

I went on Amazon to try do a pantry shop. Nothing on there.

Luckily I get milk delivered. But it's becoming a nightmare trying to work out how i will get food in a couple of weeks time.

What do they expect from people? We are slagged off if we dare take a child or two in shops. We are judged for even being in town with kids. Not everyone but quite a few are vocal about it on our local page on Facebook. People are taking pictures of people trying to get them in trouble for being irresponsible. I'm trying to be responsible and keep the kids indoors and us out of germy shops with mucky trolley handles. But I'm being told on all supermarket websites we should go to the store If we can.

I am not sure how many more weeks this is going on for, but like many others we don't want to risk getting this virus so we want to stay home.

I guess there's nothing we can do. But I think the elderly and vunerable have had a fantastic amount of help and support as they have special times to shop, slots online, volunteers shopping for them. It just feels like families are being treated like vultures for wanting to feed their kids.

Also I didn't panic shop and now I wish I did!

Jeez oh. Lay off the OP a bit.

This is a shit situation for everyone. We’re all doing what we can to get through it. Is it really so bad to let off a bit of steam about the things she is struggling with?

Or, must we always revert to “at least you aren’t an NHS worker, they have it much harder than the rest of the world right now”

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 16:24

Bold:*The extremely vulnerable are not getting these slots.

The supermarkets have not got the information from the government and it's not happening.*

And the government hasn't even sorted out a lot of us, so we are not even on the government list, My BIL in on chemo and I am immunosurpressed, as are both my sister, and my other BIL has COPD and none of us have received a letter. so we just have to manage. I live alone away from my family so I have no one. and not only at risk but also mobility defective so struggle to get out. got very upset in Sainsbury's other day, was in terrible pain and was then accused of being aggressive to the cashier, all I was doing was saying how all these tannoy messages were just making people even more paranoid. and the till supervisor told security guard I was being aggressive to staff. I paid and left don't think I will be going to sainsbury's again. Been using delivery for long time as have trouble getting out and cannot get one at all not even a collection.

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 16:28

oh dear @Greendin that seems a bit extreme you need to eat to keep up your immune system and little one need calcium and vitamins for growth and development, but I must admit I have had to resort to counting out pasta as cannot get for love nor money, My loval shop closed so cannot get essential from them now and to get to SM it is a drive, but my local plant shop has started to sell fruit and veg which is great.

EmeraldShamrock · 02/04/2020 16:37

@Aubrystrawberry You're right health is not a competition, so stop trying to use your health issues against people who'd risk losing their life due to compromised immune system to shop. You've a perfectly healthy partner to shop, you're not in the vulnerable category yet you took a very vital delivery slot for your family.

WelcomeToShootingStars · 02/04/2020 16:39

You don't NEED an online shopping delivery, you just want one.

Meanwhile there are people with no other option than to shop online, who can't get slots.

So you'll have a long time waiting for sympathy from me.

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 16:43

No that is what White blood cells do and Anemia is easily corrected by taking iron tablets

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 16:46

They do know Hypertension is a risk factor, although I am not sure why. as again it is treatable, but unfortunately there are a lot of people out there don't know they have it. But as I said earlier there are loads of people who should be on list are not, and we are all making do

MARMITEcheese2020 · 02/04/2020 16:47

Your partner can shop.. On the way home from work if need be.
Or before work if he does shifts.

You have a choice. A 80yr old vulnerable person doesn't have that luxury.

Get a grip.
I'm at home with 3 dcs Inc a 2m old.
DH is working 6 days. One of us Goes on the Sunday or an eve. I wouldn't even want to take a slot from someone who genuinely needs it

Mia1415 · 02/04/2020 16:49

Both my 7 year old DS and I are asthmatic and I'm a single parent.

We just have to go to the supermarket (as in-frequently as possible) and take every sensible precaution we can.

I've not even tried to get an online deliver slot as there are many people far more vulnerable than we are.

soupforbrains · 02/04/2020 16:49

Have a biscuit Biscuit

Your household has two active and healthy adults. One of whom is out of the home anyway. I’m sure you can manage to plan something between you. Unless your partner is both incapable of going to a shop and of looking after his own children.

Get a grip.

JorisBonson · 02/04/2020 16:52

OP, I'm anaemic, working on the frontline, fitting in food shopping as and when I can and eating tins out the cupboard when I can't.

The world isn't out to get you. Everyone is in the same boat and there's many, many people worse off than than you. Count your bloody blessings.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 02/04/2020 16:54

Op - blood pressure isn't a risk ( whatever that means)

Having high blood pressure increases your risk - high as in needing medication to treat it.

Having iron deficiency anaemia isn't a risk factor. On your other thread you say your Hb was 10 in February which is really not very low. It's not significant disease and your risk is not raised.

Honestly, mild anaemia is not comparable to people with severe heart disease, on chemo, immunocompromised following organ transplant, having cystic fibrosis etc.

It's really offensive that you are seeking to band your mild anaemia in with people who have life threatening conditions.

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 16:55

@Mia1415 have to spoken to your GP surgery? there is meant to be a support person in all GP's at least once a week. who can talk to you about your issues and will probably be able to give you the details of the support section of your local Council and then email them to say you are in the vulnerable group and will be contacting them.

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 16:56

High Blood Pressure is a risk but it is not in a vulnerable catagory, they know that some who have contracted the virus with high blood pressure and nothing else have gone on to further complications and died.

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 16:59

Ooooh!! @Hearhoovesthinkzebras I fit into at least four of the things you mention, does that mean i get a gold star???

mrsbyers · 02/04/2020 17:03

Your husband can easily pick up supplies on drive to and from work surely ? Try smaller shops , garages etc - most still have the basics

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 02/04/2020 17:04

peterlon1

That would depend - do you have mild anaemia?

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 17:06

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras Damn no do I only get a silver one then???

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 17:07

trying to lighten the thread a bit it really is getting a bit heavy

Shitsgettingcrazy · 02/04/2020 17:11

I think the issue is there are so many people who are shielding or very vulnerable (or caring for those that are)to hear op moan she cabt get more than one delivery, when you her DP is perfectly capable, of doing it....is going to piss people off.

Especially when she is claiming her illness is something it isnt and doesnt put her in the vulnerable category.

I mean its bound to wind people up.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 02/04/2020 17:11

Peter - I think a runners up rosette will be the most you can hope for.

Above you will be people with a slight toothache, those with a slight pain in the little toe on their left foot and in first place those who get a headache when there's a "r" in the month - all far more deserving of a shopping delivery than you, I'm sure you can agree?

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 17:14

HAHAHAHAHA ROFLMFAO

Oooooooooooooooooooh · 02/04/2020 17:17

YABVU to have taken that delivery slot. I’d love to be in your position.

How anaemic are you? Do you need a blood transfusion?

Tbh I am coordinating volunteers whilst shielding due to cancer and being a single parent, and there are people FAR WORSE OFF THAN YOU who are volunteering to help!

You really don’t know how lucky you are. Get a grip. Your husband could also be shopping for vulnerable neighbours.

peterlon1 · 02/04/2020 17:19

OOOH!!!! I think OP has really been told off now. not that i have seen much from her of late

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 02/04/2020 17:20

How anaemic are you? Do you need a blood transfusion?

On another thread op said her Hb is 10. Taking iron tablets.
