To take DS shopping 30 mins away regardless?

Our two lost local shops are no longer allowing DC in. I don't have alternative childcare and his nursery shut for good, even to key workers, as they couldn't afford to stay open.

My mum is a high risk group so couldn't have him. I have no other choice but to take him shopping but the local ones won't allow DC.

There is a little local shop that allows us in BUT the prices are so inflated and shopping, what I could get of it, is now twice the price. Not affordable.

Can't really get a shopping slot. I'm a key worker and not even click and collect is available. AIBU to just to take him shopping that's a good 30 min drive away? We enjoy the drive too. It feels normal.

Sounds like you haven't much choice.

cologne4711 · 01/04/2020 12:12

Have you explained to the two local shops that you don't have childcare and need to eat?

FresherThanMums · 01/04/2020 12:14

Yes, tried speaking to their managers, who were apologetic but said it was above them. Have complained officially but waiting for a response

I would, quite happily.

DropYourSword · 01/04/2020 12:16

Why even ask? What else are you supposed to do!

I would. Can’t see any problem with that in your case.

kilisibird · 01/04/2020 12:18

I have been shopping in my usual supermarket which is 30 mins away. The local co op just hasn't got the range or the stock, I leave that for the non drivers.

kilisibird · 01/04/2020 12:19

Do you have a local group of volunteers that could help you?

Please, leave the volunteers to help people who are struggling and really need them. OP can do her own shopping Confused

danni0509 · 01/04/2020 12:21

I had to take ds yesterday. No childcare what so ever and had no food.

Not sure what else you can do.

I went to big supermarket at 4pm (15 min drive) and it wasn't busy, no queues.

Ragwort · 01/04/2020 12:22

kilisibird depends on where you live, our local volunteer scheme has more volunteers than people who need help Grin. So many people desperate to ‘do something’.

But regardless, I don’t think the OP would be unreasonable to go shopping further away.

FresherThanMums · 01/04/2020 12:40

There are a few groups on FB for it but they're scarce and high demand vs not a lot of people wanting to help.

Makes more sense to me, if I go shopping myself

Go to the little shop. The increase in price won't be that much more than what you'll have to pay for the petrol to take you to the other one if you are only buying essentials.

FresherThanMums · 01/04/2020 12:45

The little shop is more expensive than if I were to buy it all in a supermarket 30 mins away and use petrol. For example, a pzlx of pasta in there is 1.50. It is 45p in the supermarket.

Plus I want treats in too! Come on, I'm locked down with a toddler and no escape other than working nights in a hospital. I deserve a few treats in

PumpkinPie2016 · 01/04/2020 12:48

I would go - you don't really have a choice.

Out of interest-who has ds when you work? Can they have him while you shop? Or go shopping for you?

WorraLiberty · 01/04/2020 12:48

I'm not sure why you're asking, if there's no alternative?

You'll just need to do it by the sound of it.

FresherThanMums · 01/04/2020 12:49

Pumpkin Ex H. And no, he won't.

OP posts:
JustStayAtHome · 01/04/2020 12:50

who looks after him whilst you work?

JustStayAtHome · 01/04/2020 12:51

x post!

add the shop on after work while your ex still has him

HoneyBee03 · 01/04/2020 12:51

I think regardless of the child policy your local shops have, if it's a cheaper and bigger supermarket further away then definitely go. We have a little local shop that's great for bread and milk, but we drive nearly an hour to our nearest supermarket. You're allowed to go out to buy food.

alltripe · 01/04/2020 12:53

Can’t you go to the supermarket on the way home from work?

Falacy · 01/04/2020 13:01

Write to your MP about them banning single parents and don't ever shop in those stores again.

PerfectPenquins · 01/04/2020 13:03

Just go with him, some of us have no choice and I wish people would be aware of that. Single parents don't always have help or people able to step in at times like this. I will have to take my kids shopping with me and anyone who tuts or buts in with their opinion on that will not like the response they get. We are all doing what we can to get by.

adaline · 01/04/2020 13:04

I would go on your way home from work if possible, but if not, then absolutely go shopping.

I have a click and collect from our nearest shop that offers it, which is 40 minutes away. I'll be driving to collect it - food shopping is a necessity.

We do have a Tesco five minutes away, however it doesn't offer deliveries or click and collect and it's about 1/5 of the size, so the stock levels are often poor, which means I end up going to 3-4 local shops and coming into contact with far more people.

You do what you have to do. If that involves driving to a different area to shop, then that's what you do.

Chillicheese123 · 01/04/2020 13:06

Honestly what else are you supposed to do?
Local volunteers are really for elderly and ill people, I think you’d be more responsible by NOT using them.
