To NOT disinfect shopping and mail?

safariboot · 31/03/2020 23:24

When I get into the house with the shopping I just wash my hands then put it all away as normal. And when the mail arrives I just open it and read it. But seems like everyone here is spraying, wiping, setting stuff to one side, the works. AIBU to not do any of that?

But we are talking about the coronavirus.
Not normal everyday shopping

Rubybluesy · 01/04/2020 01:38

I leave all packages for 48 hours and wipe over all shopping with anti bac before putting away. Washing hands too of course

safariboot · 01/04/2020 01:54

Good to read I'm not the only one.

If you haven’t been trained in how to remove gloves you are likely to contaminate yourself when doing so.

Manchestermanchester · 01/04/2020 02:24

Nah I don’t even wash my hands more than I normally do.
I don’t however leave the house and when I do I’m walking as far away from people .

You’re wrong. It’s is not airborne. It’s is spread by droplets, and in fact you could touch anything and catch it.

YANBU - I think that is just going overboard. The handwashing and not touching your face is far more important I think.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 01/04/2020 02:39

I kick any parcels inside the house and then burn my shoes.

LucaFritz · 01/04/2020 02:41

Ive been washing my hands after opening mail/putting away shopping as i always do but i think disinfection of your groceries is a bit too far though i guess that's what all the panic bought anti bac wipes are been used for

Sertchgi123 · 01/04/2020 02:54

I’m doing everything I can to avoid the virus. Why wouldn’t you?

Manchestermanchester · 01/04/2020 03:06

Can I ask why people wear gloves to go shopping, drive their car, pay for their shopping, pack their bags etc.... surely it’s just the same as using your own hands?

PenisBeakerDipper · 01/04/2020 03:12

@Manchestermanchester according to WHO it’s actually worse as it leads to complacency! It also said there’s no evidence of Covid being transmitted through food. Like everyone else I’m also just washing hands and not touching my face.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 01/04/2020 03:16

I disinfect my shopping, but that doesn't make it right or wrong. I've heard that the risk of catching the virus off groceries is v small, but it makes me feel better to do it.
Each to their own I say.

AdoreTheBeach · 01/04/2020 04:14

I am now doing this. My last “shop” was a pop up fruit & veg shop walking distance from my house. Old style wicker baskets you fill yourself from open boxes. I know lots of people have been picking up and touching the fruit & veg. So as soon as I got home, took off my shoes at the door, in kitchen I washed my hands then washed all the items with warm soapy water. I had never washed bananas, eggs, etc before in my life but I knew my family would be picking up the things I bought pretty much right away to eat, so I washed everything.

Had the items been supermarket prepackaged, no I don’t think I would have done the same.

Post - I’m washing my hands right after opening.

Curious78 · 01/04/2020 04:36

I didn't stock pile on anti bac sprays or surface wipes, so sadly I cannot

orangejuicer · 01/04/2020 04:55

Anti bac won't help you with a virus anyway.

RedHelenB · 01/04/2020 04:57

Wow! No need there really isn't.

Sh05 · 01/04/2020 05:01

I don't use anti bac spray not did I panic buy it, I just use fairy liquid and hot water. The panic buyers of anti bac were probably people who'd never used it before in their lives but thought it would be best to start using.
I also wear gloves when shopping, bag everything up then uncurl one off to pay by contactless.( I've seen midwives remove gloves so that they're inside out , ball them up and bin them so try to copy that).
They're just a reminder really not to touch the face, as I know if I'm thinking,' don't do it' I will get an itch or something and end up touching it!

e1y1 · 01/04/2020 05:04

My hands are already resembling a crocodile's skin with all the washing...Getting through so much hand cream too.

This!!!they're so dry now that called in the big guns, half jar of face cream, yes face cream, way past hand cream territory - rubber gloves on and running my hands under the hot tap so the cream on my hands is melting in the gloves and soaking in. Upside every time I wash my "hands" I'm washing the gloves.

EffOrf · 01/04/2020 05:13

I wash my hands after handling post and packages and putting packaging in appropriate bin

PhilCornwall1 · 01/04/2020 05:27

We don't bother doing the shopping, parcels or post or well anything much to be honest. We are going to be a nation with OCD very soon.

Treaclepie19 · 01/04/2020 08:05

Same as @CremeEggThief. I can't do it or my OCD will be the bigger risk to my health.

cactus2020 · 01/04/2020 08:29

You are right. I don't clean this stuff or delay opening/using it. Agree that way madness lies. But you're right, MN seems to have a high proportion of people doing this stuff.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 01/04/2020 08:38

I am personally not but I wouldn’t scoff at anybody who did. Whatever you need to do to give yourself peace of mind in times like this.

I’m a key worker in a large supermarket so still going to work every day. The concessions I’ve made are to take my uniform off and wash it as soon as I’m through the door then shower and thoroughly cleanse my phone (I wash it with hand soap and a clean flannel).

I see a lot of people wearing gloves touching trolleys, shelves etc then getting their phones out. Since you press it against your face I’d think it’s more of a risk.
