To NOT disinfect shopping and mail?

When I get into the house with the shopping I just wash my hands then put it all away as normal. And when the mail arrives I just open it and read it. But seems like everyone here is spraying, wiping, setting stuff to one side, the works. AIBU to not do any of that?

I don't. I wash my hands before going to the supermarket, when I come back and after putting the shopping away.
Saw a family of 4 yesterday in the shop (parents with 2 teens) - as soon as they entered the store the parents shouted for everyone to hear: "KEEP YOUR HANDS IN YOUR POCKETS AND ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING!!". Heard they repeat this several times at the top of their voice until they left. Not sure why they all needed to come out in the first place, especially if they can't even control their secondary school kids.

@KDMotherKfGirls
technically true unless she had just coughed on her arm, or hand etc

Post and shopping are low risk. Unwrap, bin the envelopes/wapping and wash your hands. most of the disinfectants hav no power aginst virus anyway

Alwayscheerful · 01/04/2020 12:30

If the virus is not airborne why are they disinfecting the air in the streets in China and Korea? ( akin to crop spraying).

BrightYellowDaffodil · 01/04/2020 12:37

YANBU to not do any of this sanitising post/boiling fruit before it's allowed over the threshold/burning any clothes you wore when you left the house. That way madness lies.

KOKOagainandagain · 01/04/2020 12:38

This video discusses the WHO claims that CV is not airborne and compares to research carried out by MIT from about 10 mins in. Spoiler: MIT research shows it is. Also discuses viral load as do earlier videos.

GabsAlot · 01/04/2020 12:43

nope havent wiped down a thingive bought nor mail-no symptoms so far

Fluffybutter · 01/04/2020 12:46

I did wipe the stuff I got in Costco yesterday , just because I saw a lot of people touching stuff then putting it back . I just spray a little antibacterial spray on some kitchen towel and do it that way

onetwothreeadventure · 01/04/2020 12:57

I try but mostly fail. I do shopping for my own house of 5 and 3 families who are isolated and there are too many items for me to manage. I don't touch my face while I unpack and I wash my hands and any cupboard handles I touched putting stuff away.

The families who are isolating do wipe it when they get it and often they ask me to keep it for 24 hours. I don't know how helpful that is in terms of reducing risk but I'm happy if they feel its useful.

Bleach, disinfectant etc contain extremely harmful chemicals. My worry is that the over-use of these products are going to cause more health issues than the virus. A lot of these products are anti-bacterial which have no effect on the virus.

Hand washing and social distancing are best but if you want to wipe down your shopping then water and soap are fine.

I personally don't wash my post, shopping etc I just increase hand washing and avoid other people as much as possible.

endofthelinefinally · 01/04/2020 15:37

I started off using a bleach solution, but updated infection control information reassures me that soap and water and ordinary detergent is fine.
I don't go out except to the garden now
(immunosuppressed), so don't need the hand sanitiser any more.
I use rubber gloves a lot and wash them, so my hands are ok.

If the virus is not airborne why are they disinfecting the air in the streets in China and Korea? ( akin to crop spraying) the clue is in the ‘akin to crop spraying’, Always. When they crop spray are they spraying the air or the crops? To cover a large area with a liquid, you tend to spray it around and let it settle.
This article from the Washington Post explains why supermarket goods, Post etc are very low risk. It may take you to a main page, but select the free option and it’ll go to the article.

I never even thought to do it in all honesty. I wash my hands about 20 times a day, they’re cracked and bleeding so I think that’s sufficient.
