To think not allowing 'small shops' is silly?

Popped to the shop earlier to get bread, milk, eggs and a few bits of fruit, I can manage on this for a week as have some Brexit supplies in the cupboard, so working my way through that and not buying more than we need for the week. I was told that the new directive is that no one can do a 'small shop', and ended up having to get a small trolly load of stuff which is ridiculous. I'd already been queuing to get in for a while and don't have a car so would have had to get a bus to another shop. I know I could have survived without them, but as I was already there seems stupid.

AIBU to think that this is a stupid policy, and completely goes against stockpiling for some? Also with the restrictions on tins etc you end up either buying crap you don't need, or going elsewhere which means you will have made 2 journeys to 2 shops for a few items. Not forgetting those who live hand to mouth and cannot afford a big shop. I get the idea, that it 'forces' people to buy more and so go shopping less, but as it doesn't seem much common sense is being applied to it; do we think it should be rolled out everywhere?

LimitIsUp

If you want a chocolate bar, then in this modern world we live in that is pretty easy, even given the present threat of Coronavirus.

If you have a potato or even an apple (they tend to be sweeter than potatoes), then slice them, about the thickness of a chocolate bar.
Look at them and accept that they are IDENTIFYING as chocolate.
You now simply have to take a slice, pop it into your mouth and imagine it is Lindt chocolate - enjoy!
If you don't do this, then you are potato/applephobic.

myfav · 30/03/2020 23:40

Ridiculous. I said to DH all these shops will have massive profits. We're so lucky to be unaffected financially but I feel for those who can't afford big shops or the shops they used to do before all the offers were removed.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 30/03/2020 23:55

Most of the commercial brands of bread does too

Not if you eat it. By day 4 it's either gone or starts going mouldy anyways.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 31/03/2020 00:02

You must sit at home in the dark and eat only sawdust.

Don't be daft, sawdust would possibly involved a special trip and we're only allowed to leave the house once a week. And no breathing outside. Stock up on oxygen at home, you selfish git.

AGoodPodcastAndANiceCupOfTea · 31/03/2020 00:09

@FrangipaniBlue You don't - at some point it runs out and you go without. Surely that's obvious??? The world discs end and the sky discs fall in if you don't have a loaf of bread in the house. People are so privileged these days that they can't see that it isn't a catastrophe to not be able to have a sandwich for lunch and that is actually quite tragic. I think the idea that someone can't manage without exactly what they are used to being able to buy is what's ridiculous. These are exceptional times and you are being asked to make changes. Oh, wait - you weren't. Clearly it's only other people who have to make them. You still appear to expect to have your life carry on exactly as it was before.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 31/03/2020 00:11

I don't really want to post screenshots as it will be hugely outing You can blur your name. You can also blur out the location although I'd like to know which police force it is as they sound exceptional!

I don't want to risk outing myself to be honest, hah. Are you the only person who lives in the town? If other people are discussing it why would you be singled out as the poster?

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 31/03/2020 00:14

The world discs end and the sky discs fall in if you don't have a loaf of bread in the house.

I lived through rationing, we still had bloody bread.

Now bread is a blooming luxury item, required only by the spoilt, selfish and privileged? Fuck me

WaterOffADucksCrack · 31/03/2020 00:18

I've tried not to go out & shopped in the supermarket at the weekend but wanted to bake really? Why not wait until you next needed to do a food shop? Your want to bake isn't essential. Why do you think everyone other than you should make sacrifices? We all want to do loads of things. But some of us don't to keep others healthy.

Marieo · 31/03/2020 01:38

@WaterOffADucksCrack if a police force clarifying something when someone asks is exceptional, yeah I guess. Although probably says more about your low expectations. And no.

OP posts:
WaterOffADucksCrack · 31/03/2020 02:38

Marieo I think to get a response that quickly with everything else going on is exceptional. I'm not saying that's right, it's simply a sign of the times especially with how short staffed they are as they barely have time to investigate crimes. It's interesting that you jump straight to trying to be unkind by saying someone has low expectations (which is a weird thing to say when you must know the strain they are under) than posting a screenshot.

Marieo · 31/03/2020 03:10

Okay, but: a member of the staff in the store is telling customers that they aren't permitted to do a small shop, they say this is due to guidance they have been given by the police. Store manager doesn't seem sure that is the case, directs staff to stop people with small shops whilst they make some enquiries with the police, police confirm that it is not policy- and they will continue liaising with businesses to make sure they are aware what the laws actually mean for them. Store accepts that and allows people to buy whatever.

That is not time or resource heavy for the police, and it is part of their duty for the Covid effort really, so not sure why it's surprising that they did something. I didn't know that this had happened until the store manager posted explaining later on in the evening. Of course she could be lying, not sure why she would though. And no, I am not going to provide screenshots of what someone else has posted on social media onto a public messageboard. I'm sure if you search enough you can find plenty of posts on it. I never said that they responded on blues and twos following a flurry of angry 999 calls that people couldn't just buy some bananas.

Ah thanks for that wisdom.

I shall henceforth tell DS that when the bread and milk runs out on day 3 he must go another 11 days living solely on yoghurts, fruit and jam straight from the jar alongside dry cereal because someone on MN says we're only allowed out once a fortnight.

That is such excellent advice, it will save me a fortune!

okiedokieme · 31/03/2020 07:26

I shopped yesterday on my bike, I bought 6 things in Aldi and nobody mentioned a word. No queues here either plus at the weekend I went in with dp which was fine. I always shop daily/every other day because we are in a temporary house situation with only a tiny fridge, little other storage and I shop on foot/by bike

WaterOffADucksCrack · 31/03/2020 07:29

That's all totally different to what you originally said 😂

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/03/2020 07:42

@GreyishDays as I said, I've been finding it hard to get eggs as our local corner shop has been running short of them hence only buying half a dozen.

swishthecat · 31/03/2020 08:15

Of FFS Marieo you keep changing the story. We all know you either made the whole thing up or you were repeating some guff off SM which you hadn't checked the veracity of.

swishthecat · 31/03/2020 08:18

I do hope that jam was purchased before the current crisis. Also you need to reconsider the yogurt, it may not be on the MN list of acceptable goods.

Cacaca · 31/03/2020 08:31

Perhaps the police clarified it because she wasn't the only person this happened to. As she mentioned, it was all over a local Facebook page so perhaps quite a few people throughout the day may have contacted them - or it may have also happened to a police officer when in doing some shopping. Just because it’s not happening in ‘your’ store, doesn’t mean it’s not happening elsewhere. People are being extremely overzealous in some instances with the new regulations.

soloula · 31/03/2020 08:46

What a lot of nonsense. Some folk have no car so can only buy what they can carry. Some folk live on their own so a small shop might be all they need. Some folk might only do a big shop once every few weeks then only need to top up with fresh stuff a couple times in that period. Some shops are sold out of the basics so you've no choice but to go back and try and get them again once they're in stock. Plenty reasons why a small shop is perfectly acceptable.

YouDoYou18 · 31/03/2020 08:52

But what if somebody only has £10 left for food?! Unfortunately it’s a reality for people that they have little to no money left for food after bills, and then they’re being turned away at the till?! That’s awful!

FlissMumsnet · 31/03/2020 09:22

Morning everyone,

It's been confirmed this is definitely not a supermarket policy but a one-off so we are leaving this thread up for the time being.

AGoodPodcastAndANiceCupOfTea · 31/03/2020 09:40

@FrangipaniBlue So the only options in your house are gone off yogurts and jam or bread - okay. I'm afraid that you are meant to be saying that DS can't have some of the things that he wants at the current time including sandwiches and toast everyday if you aren't able to stock up or plan ahead. You seem determined to believe that I am being unreasonable but nowhere have I said for you to feed him garbage just that you might not be able to get everything that you want at all times at the moment. Your government have asked that you go to the supermarket as little as possible and no point did they say but @FrangipaniBlue can go as often as she likes because it's inconvenient to her to give her ds a meal that he might not choose such as soup without a sandwich or a rice based meal. You are allowed to go out but you are only meant to go to shops when you absolutely need to because they are full of people, are difficult to keep a distance in when they are busy and because the workers in them are already being forced to come into contact with too large a chain of possible contagion. People like you show just how little we understand the difference between need and want these days.

Marieo · 31/03/2020 09:43

Pretty pointless posting this as people will likely say I've photoshopped it and written it myself, but a statement from the local police about it.

OP posts:
AGoodPodcastAndANiceCupOfTea · 31/03/2020 09:46

@YouDoYou18 But that isn't the vast majority of people on this thread. Those people have to be allowed to go to get their food and common sense needs to be applied and reading the thread it now is at the store but the reality is that, once again, living in poverty means that those people are being forced to put themselves at increased risk compared to those with enough money to buy in bulk and it's awful. Most people on here who think this is appalling simply don't want to have to alter their shopping or eating practices in any way. I have just eaten fried eggs without toast - it was a bit crap but I'll survive and eventually I'll either make some bread or we'll get some delivered. It's really not the end of the world even though many seem to think it is.

Marieo · 31/03/2020 09:57

If anyone wants to apologize for calling me a liar though you are most welcome Grin
