To think not allowing 'small shops' is silly?

Popped to the shop earlier to get bread, milk, eggs and a few bits of fruit, I can manage on this for a week as have some Brexit supplies in the cupboard, so working my way through that and not buying more than we need for the week. I was told that the new directive is that no one can do a 'small shop', and ended up having to get a small trolly load of stuff which is ridiculous. I'd already been queuing to get in for a while and don't have a car so would have had to get a bus to another shop. I know I could have survived without them, but as I was already there seems stupid.

AIBU to think that this is a stupid policy, and completely goes against stockpiling for some? Also with the restrictions on tins etc you end up either buying crap you don't need, or going elsewhere which means you will have made 2 journeys to 2 shops for a few items. Not forgetting those who live hand to mouth and cannot afford a big shop. I get the idea, that it 'forces' people to buy more and so go shopping less, but as it doesn't seem much common sense is being applied to it; do we think it should be rolled out everywhere?

Good to know!

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 30/03/2020 20:10

Why is it
"Good to know"
When it's a pile of misinterpreted bollocks and won't apply to any other shop
I'm seriously beginning to wonder how utterly ridiculous and stupid people are

Spacerader · 30/03/2020 20:12

A weeks shop is normally sufficient for me. But with my ith teenagers at home daily I'm going through food so quickly a loaf of bread is lasting no time at all, and you can't really stock up on bread (I refuse to freeze bread).

I think I buy enough for a week but it's not, ir I cant buy enough for a week because the shops dont have enough. So I find I'm having to shop every 3/4 days.

On another note, I dont know if it's been said. But j bet all the Brexit preppers are loving life right now with thier stockpiles.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/03/2020 20:17

PinkSparklyPussyCat we get through loads of eggs and my DS is an Olympic milk drinker. I've been buying 4 X 4 pint cartons of milk at a time which lasts us all week. How much are you using that you need to buy a couple of times a week? I am absolutley not criticising you, I am just fascinated to know how much you get through!

I don't drink milk but DH gets through 2-3 4 pint cartons a week but we don't have room to store them along with food in the fridge (I'm waiting for DH to say he was right, we should have had less cupboard space and a bigger fridge freezer!). We've been struggling to get eggs so have only been able to get half a dozen at a time so they don't last long.

We haven't been going to the supermarket but to the local corner shop twice a week so I don't think it's excessive, although I have been told on here that it is.

ilovecakeandwine · 30/03/2020 20:18

Hmm I've read the whole thread and I thought utter rubbish that's not true and now the op said the police have spoken to them and it is wrong . I suspect it wasn't true in the first place .

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 30/03/2020 20:20

One of the big ones, starts with A and it isn't Asda

Why not just say 'it was in Aldi'? You're just recounting an actual event.

Marieo · 30/03/2020 20:21

@ilovecakeandwine surely I would make up something more exciting if I was going to? I don't really want to post screenshots as it will be hugely outing, I have asked MN to delete the thread. If it was some sort of weird lie for fun id surely be enjoying it enough to keep winding people up. The police have spoken to the store to clarify the guidance, not to arrest them or anything.

I don’t agree with the stupid nonsense rules...but wanted to say for those people who don’t know, that eggs will last several weeks past the date (and quite a bit longer than that if they’re refrigerated). Bread lasts at least two weeks quite easily - first 4 or 5 days, fresh, use for sandwiches as usual, next 4 or 5 days move it to the fridge to preserve it for longer, and toast it to use. After that the leftover bits can be dried to make breadcrumbs or croutons. Milk will easily last a few days past the date as long as it’s stored in a cold fridge, and when it’s no longer fresh enough can be used for cooking/baking.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 30/03/2020 20:22

If MN could delete it as I do see how this could be causing anxiety for some, and I should have realised that before posting. Apologies to anyone who this has been upsetting

Oh right. That's why it should be deleted.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 30/03/2020 20:22

But if you know that it's not actually true or going to be enforced and that the police have resolved itHmm
Why start a wind em up and let go thread about it
With the oh so coy it starts with an A comment

MyDaughtersLeftFoot · 30/03/2020 20:24

I was in Aldi near me yesterday and no such rules

Marieo · 30/03/2020 20:24

@hobnobsaremyfave because it was only clarified since I posted, I can think of far more exciting wind them up and go threads if so inclined. This isn't a particularly exciting one, is it?

OP posts:
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 30/03/2020 20:26

You posted this thread shortly before 7pm. Since then, and in between posts, you have managed to get hold of the local police, and they have, in these busy times, managed to go to Aldi and clarify the situation and advise them? Yeh, righto.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 30/03/2020 20:26

So how do you know the police have been to the store since you posted?
I'm intrigued
And clearly far too bored
But sick to death of the scaremongering on here

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 30/03/2020 20:26

Indeed Spongebob

Marieo · 30/03/2020 20:28

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants no, people have been posting about it all evening on the local group, someone else has contacted them, I can ask exactly what time if you want details and how they contacted the store?

OP posts:
hobnobsaremyfavourite · 30/03/2020 20:28

Dear god the pitchforks are out
Blimey

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 30/03/2020 20:29

And what a pathetic waste of police time
Bet they love whoever reported this imaginary pile of bollocks

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 30/03/2020 20:29

No mention of any of this earlier though? At best, a big old drip feed...

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 30/03/2020 20:31

the police are speaking to them and explaining it is not policy and they have misinterpreted it

Have they kept you up to date? Were you there in person? The police response to this is absolutely astonishing. Which force is it?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 30/03/2020 20:31

So did you actually witness any of this
Or another game of "he says she says" on Facebook
Hmm

ilovecakeandwine · 30/03/2020 20:33

surely I would make up something more exciting if I was going to?
I dunno , if it's not then I apologise but it was a very short time from you starting the thread and finding out it was all nonsense.

MrsSnitchnose · 30/03/2020 20:33

It's because you absolutely aren't meant to be popping out for a few bits - you are meant to be doing one big ship at a time and making that last

I don't have enough room to store everything I would need to buy for a week, and only letting customers have 3 of each item renders a once week shop impossible

GreyishDays · 30/03/2020 20:34

@PinkSparklyPussyCat
Can’t you buy more eggs at a time? Our milk usually has a week’s date on it, and eggs definitely last way more than a week.

Namechange4nowt45 · 30/03/2020 20:34

Sounds like a security guard gone power mad, that or let's see how many people to believe their bullsh#t. Ignore them op, infact I'd complain, as for small shops what if you only have so much money? I think the security guard has tried to say essential shopping etc and said it the wrong way I.e my neighbor's will hit the shop for his daily bottle of Jack daniels and tobacco rather than sticking to a good shop once or twice weekly,? My neighbor's are alcoholics which breaks my heart for them.
