To think not allowing 'small shops' is silly?

Popped to the shop earlier to get bread, milk, eggs and a few bits of fruit, I can manage on this for a week as have some Brexit supplies in the cupboard, so working my way through that and not buying more than we need for the week. I was told that the new directive is that no one can do a 'small shop', and ended up having to get a small trolly load of stuff which is ridiculous. I'd already been queuing to get in for a while and don't have a car so would have had to get a bus to another shop. I know I could have survived without them, but as I was already there seems stupid.

AIBU to think that this is a stupid policy, and completely goes against stockpiling for some? Also with the restrictions on tins etc you end up either buying crap you don't need, or going elsewhere which means you will have made 2 journeys to 2 shops for a few items. Not forgetting those who live hand to mouth and cannot afford a big shop. I get the idea, that it 'forces' people to buy more and so go shopping less, but as it doesn't seem much common sense is being applied to it; do we think it should be rolled out everywhere?

Where was this this is really worrying me?

sheeplemyrtle · 30/03/2020 19:13

What happens if you don't have a car or can't physically carry loads?

wildcherries · 30/03/2020 19:17

Insane. I'm on a tight budget. That would screw everything up for me.

CodenameVillanelle · 30/03/2020 19:17

I don't see ANYTHING about this on Twitter. It would be there if this was happening. I'm sorry but I don't believe you.

SinglePringle · 30/03/2020 19:18

Tweet this. It’s outrageous.

Unescorted · 30/03/2020 19:18

I was just in Aldi half an hour ago - no mention of "no small shops". A couple of people with baskets.

NameofTheWind · 30/03/2020 19:21

We went to Aldi two days ago - no problem with small shops. Sounds like an over zealous security guard

AGoodPodcastAndANiceCupOfTea · 30/03/2020 19:21

It's because you absolutely aren't meant to be popping out for a few bits - you are meant to be doing one big ship at a time and making that last. If everyone were just popping out for bread and milk the shops would be very busy. It's unfortunate that panic buying means that people are having to leave their big shop without everything that they need but it is also true that in a time like this you might have to sometimes manage without the things you would normally have or source them from a delivery firm that you haven't yet used. Hopefully the panic buying has now subsided add this won't be an issue anymore. People should be in supermarkets for the least amount of time possible.

Hmm
cabbageking · 30/03/2020 19:22

Shop elsewhere.

This is the shop trying to get you to spend more money.

Purchased a loaf of bread and 6 tins of cat food this afternoon.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/03/2020 19:23

This is blatant rubbish.
You need to report them, not sure who to, though. Trading standards?

MagnoliaJustice · 30/03/2020 19:23

I was in Aldi earlier. I bought milk, butter, apples, tomatoes, wraps, sliced ham and sliced cheese. Nobody commented that I should have had a trolley full to the brim and lots of other shoppers were buying a handful of items.

I would be inclined to contact Aldi head office and ask if this is actually policy, because there are a lot of people who never do a big shop - single folk, elderly people etc

izzywizzygood · 30/03/2020 19:26

That's awful, not everyone can afford a big shop in one go, nor carry tonnes of stuff home if they haven't got a car.

adaline · 30/03/2020 19:30

It's because you absolutely aren't meant to be popping out for a few bits - you are meant to be doing one big ship at a time and making that last

It doesn't say that at all. It says you need to pop out as infrequently as possible. There's a difference. You can do a big shop but still run out of fresh produce and need to top up.

Kitchendiscodiva · 30/03/2020 19:31

How bonkers. Surely the quicker you are in and out the better for everyone. Agree with poster that suggested tweeting them about this. It's mad.

AutumnRose1 · 30/03/2020 19:32

This can’t be right. I live alone in a small flat. Am I supposed to buy more than I need just to satisfy the rule?

I shop at Aldi but in my area there will be many people in my situation. Apart from the ethics of buying more, who can afford it?

bellabelly · 30/03/2020 19:32

On the Aldi website, link here it explicitly says to "buy only what you need - our stores are being replenished every day. So someone's talking bollocks. Confused

AutumnRose1 · 30/03/2020 19:32

Oh, I never use a trolley!

HighNetGirth · 30/03/2020 19:33

This is terrible. I have to shop for my mother so would quite likely have to do a ‘small’ shop- one 80 year old with a small appetite living alone doesn’t need much. And of course there are countless perfectly good reasons why people would only buy a little. This absolutely stinks.

TranquilityofSolitude · 30/03/2020 19:33

I've been to Aldi today and the assistant at the door told me that there weren't any baskets, so if I needed more than a handful of stuff I should take a trolley. I wonder if the store you went to have misinterpreted that message and thought it was to do with the size of shop, not hygiene of baskets.

Haveitheright · 30/03/2020 19:35

people were actually being turned away at the tills with little shops

So stuff they had handles was being put back for other people to buy? Lovely.

nicknamehelp · 30/03/2020 19:35

I got a hand basket full of bits today and no one told me I hadnt purchased enough.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/03/2020 19:40

It's because you absolutely aren't meant to be popping out for a few bits - you are meant to be doing one big ship at a time and making that last

So how do I make milk and eggs last? I can go a while without needing to buy meals but I need to buy milk and eggs a couple of times a week.

Goawayquickly · 30/03/2020 19:42

This isn’t a policy, if it happened it’s someone in that store misinterpreted. Their website says only buy what you need and people would definitely be complaining on Twitter if this were true.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/03/2020 19:42

That makes absolutely no sense. I walk a good distance to my nearest big shop and carry a rucksack, so how the hell am I supposed to carry a big shop home? Stuff and nonsense.
