To think not allowing 'small shops' is silly?

Popped to the shop earlier to get bread, milk, eggs and a few bits of fruit, I can manage on this for a week as have some Brexit supplies in the cupboard, so working my way through that and not buying more than we need for the week. I was told that the new directive is that no one can do a 'small shop', and ended up having to get a small trolly load of stuff which is ridiculous. I'd already been queuing to get in for a while and don't have a car so would have had to get a bus to another shop. I know I could have survived without them, but as I was already there seems stupid.

AIBU to think that this is a stupid policy, and completely goes against stockpiling for some? Also with the restrictions on tins etc you end up either buying crap you don't need, or going elsewhere which means you will have made 2 journeys to 2 shops for a few items. Not forgetting those who live hand to mouth and cannot afford a big shop. I get the idea, that it 'forces' people to buy more and so go shopping less, but as it doesn't seem much common sense is being applied to it; do we think it should be rolled out everywhere?

So we are onky supposed to go to the shop for essentials, but we must buy a trolly fully to be allowed into the shop.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 30/03/2020 19:42

Oh god more imaginary rules for people to wank over

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 30/03/2020 19:43

What is a “small” shop and how do they decide?

My weekly shop has always fitted in one of those wheeled baskets in Lidl. That’s for me and 2 dc. A single person without children would be buying less again. Who decides what’s “small”?

CodenameVillanelle · 30/03/2020 19:43

I absolutely don't believe this happened. Come on people.

GrumpyHoonMain · 30/03/2020 19:44

Go to social media and name and shame them

Elieza · 30/03/2020 19:44

Yeah, too many people on here have been at Aldi recently without issue.

You’re having a giraffe OP.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 30/03/2020 19:45

Clearly bollocks
Fresh food can be bought when needed
Ffs where do people get off making even harder rules for other people to fail at
Does it make some posters feel super smug and clever?

TwigTheWonderKid · 30/03/2020 19:47

PinkSparklyPussyCat we get through loads of eggs and my DS is an Olympic milk drinker. I've been buying 4 X 4 pint cartons of milk at a time which lasts us all week. How much are you using that you need to buy a couple of times a week? I am absolutley not criticising you, I am just fascinated to know how much you get through!

GloGirl · 30/03/2020 19:47

I would probably report this to my MP - someone with a bit of clout but not taking up valuable emergency service time.

thismeansnothing · 30/03/2020 19:48

This is what's bothering me. We did a 'big shop' back end of last week. We have stuff for main meals to last us till middle of next week. But I'm going to need more fruit n veg (only have a small fridge to store it in and it only lasts so long anyway) plus bread and milk. But then I feel bad that's its going to be judged as an unnecessary trip to just get these bits, but they are bits I need. But I'm not buying more for the hell of it and to justify going out either iyswim.

Gruffalomom · 30/03/2020 19:48

That is totally bonkers?! The staff member must have been misinformed?!

Haffiana · 30/03/2020 19:48

Oh god more imaginary rules for people to wank over

Exactly.

Clampdown on those willfully spreading their misinterpretation of the rules is now starting.

I want to see Mumsnet active in deleting posts on threads like this one which have wilful misinformation on them.

There's been a lot of froth bollocks on here today
Invariably started by hairy handed PBP

JanewaysBun · 30/03/2020 19:50

What if you're poor- do you get the rest of the stuff for free? Bonkers...

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 30/03/2020 19:50

Starts with A and isn't Asda? Also then?
Must just be your shop if they did that as I was in Aldi yesterday and just did a "little shop."
Was absolutely fine to do so.
So sounds like utter crap to me and definitely not either "the law" or a rule in all the stores.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 30/03/2020 19:51

Aldi not Also, bloody auto correct

SuburbanFraggle · 30/03/2020 19:53

What if you're down to your last fiver?

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 30/03/2020 19:53

It's because you absolutely aren't meant to be popping out for a few bits - you are meant to be doing one big ship at a time and making that last

I live alone and always have a supply of ambient goods to create meals out of. I could spend a tenner in a supermarket and that WOULD last me a good while. Over a week depending on what i had in. I am also paid weekly and there are many weeks when i could not afford a big shop.
Luckily i was able to afford a big shop before this kicked of big time so havent needed a supermarket for a few weeks.
This was before the panic buying started before anyone accuses me of contributing it, and i dont think anyone was panic buying quinoa or ryvita which was some of the stuff i was getting.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 30/03/2020 19:56

That's inhand @Haffiana.

Marieo · 30/03/2020 19:59

It's genuinely what the local store was saying, the police are speaking to them and explaining it is not policy and they have misinterpreted it. I was also panicking about it and wondered if I was being unreasonable to be annoyed and worried about it. I didn't post to worry others and it genuinely happened today; thankfully seems that the store was in the wrong and have been set straight. If MN could delete it as I do see how this could be causing anxiety for some, and I should have realised that before posting. Apologies to anyone who this has been upsetting.

And the prize for the most ridiculous statement on MN today goes to @AGoodPodcastAndANiceCupOfTea Confused

Do please impart your wisdom on us as to how you make fresh products such as bread last a week (or in my case two weeks) between "big shops"?

ilovedjerrymore · 30/03/2020 20:05

I would say this store have misinterpreted the information somewhere along the line. I went in to this supermarket in Saturday and had a few items in my basket and wasn’t stopped. Man behind had one item he paid and left no problem.

RedskyAtnight · 30/03/2020 20:05

I've been buying 4 X 4 pint cartons of milk at a time which lasts us all week.

We are restricted to buying 1 or 2 4 pint containers round here (depending on shop). We've reduced the amount of milk we use, but do need to pop out and get more in the week. And yes, I'd much rather buy more at one go and shop less frequently. The food restrictions are unfortunately at odds with the "shop as little as possible" restrictions.

Marieo · 30/03/2020 20:06

@ilovedjerrymore thankfully this seems to be the case, and they are being spoken to.
