Starting to get annoyed at people who don't think rules apply to them

WelcomeToShootingStars · 30/03/2020 08:42

So the rules say we can go outside for 1 form of exercise a day. Yet I see so many people saying things like "but we live in the countryside and it's quiet", or "my dog is used to 3 walks a day" etc

Then there's the newer stipulation of not driving anywhere non essential. And yet I see people saying it's OK less than 10 miles, or it's OK if you're driving somewhere remote to exercise.

Why are people unable to make such a tiny miniscule sacrifice? And why do they think the rules (designed to keep everybody safe) apply to everybody else but them?

Are those the government rules?

Do we all really need to be told, exactly, down to the detail, what to do and what not to do? Are we all so self-centred and selfish that we will do what the hell we want as long as we're not told not to? How about, for once, we take heed of the general guidance to only do things that are essential/necessary - i.e. to act within the spirit of the guidance rather than the detail of the law?

Same with all the stupid idiots who actually left the UK to go on holiday 2 weeks ago, "because they weren't told not to". Were they really so stupid not to understand the seriousness of the situation, risk of travel abroad, risks of not getting home, etc. Do these people not watch/read the news?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 30/03/2020 11:45

People are enraged about TFL. But what are key workers meant to do? Not go to work?

On the other hand, what can you do about not going out for multiple walks per day, which is against NHS advice?

Their advice is to take one form of exercise and even then minimise the amount of time you are out. Why wouldn't you follow that advice, even if it isn't against the law?

PurpleDaisies · 30/03/2020 11:47

I haven’t said that I’m not janus.

I am uncomfortable with the police stopping people and sending them home when there’s no law saying you can’t drive somewhere local to exercise. The prime minister hasn’t even said not to do that. I am very uncomfortable with the police shaming people out for a walk while observing social distancing rules.

yellowfishes · 30/03/2020 11:49

Just use common sense. They made it a blanket rule so that it's idiot proof, but obviously the same rules need not apply to people living in remote country houses who can walk around all day and not see anyone, and someone living in a London flat who walks past 10 people just to get to the end of their street.

Janus · 30/03/2020 11:49

Our local police have put it on Facebook that you HAVE to walk from home, you CANNOT drive to walk your dogs or do exercise. They must have got that law from somewhere??

Tootletum · 30/03/2020 11:49

Yes, but there's a world of difference between someone wh drives 5 miles to walk their dog on curbar edge, and the people who were discovered having a huge house party. The former doesn't really increase risk regardless of what Derbyshire police want to claim, the latter is fucking stupid and makes a joke of all our sacrifice. It's about having good judgement, which we now apparently need forced on us because of morons.

species5618 · 30/03/2020 11:49

How about Stephen Kinnock driving to his Dad from Wales to London (and back presumably). He was delivering "essential supplies".

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/03/2020 11:49

People are enraged about TFL. But what are key workers meant to do? Not go to work?

I’m a bloody key worker and I am be a risk in the cattle wagons TFL has deigned to provide.

So I can go there, but am not allowed to go for a walk where I won’t meet another soul?

MarieQueenofScots · 30/03/2020 11:52

We live near a deserted spot where we walk daily (not since Corona started). Last weekend we couldn't get out as it was so busy with idiots driving to take their walk.

The residents at the bottom have taken to not parking on their drives and parking on the road blocking people from stopping. It has worked a treat!

species5618 · 30/03/2020 11:53

Sorry, that should read "deliver necessary supplies".
And then had the nerve to post pictures on Twitter.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 30/03/2020 11:53

But the virus was found to remain suspended in the air for three hours. They are still doing research to find out exactly how it is transmitted and whether it will remain suspended outdoors or could be thrown up from the ground. So, while there is uncertainty why would you increase the number of occasions that you are possibly at risk of catching it?

PurpleDaisies · 30/03/2020 11:53

I haven’t seen evidence of it. I’d be pleased if someone could show me.
Some police forces appear to have been behaving very heavy handedly.

What’s the better situation-someone in inner city London driving 15minutes to exercise somewhere quiet or crowds of people tramping circles round their blocks of flats?

aupresdemonarbre · 30/03/2020 11:54

Last time I check Boris isn’t world king, the government can’t issue decrees and parliament still makes the law. I have sympathy with objecting to lawbreaking, I have no time for jackboot lickers sowing division in society and denouncing their neighbours over perfectly legal actions. This kind of conduct is absolutely toxic. If you don’t like the law, write to your mp or otherwise campaign for change. Vigilante internet shaming is not good for our society.

WelcomeToShootingStars · 30/03/2020 11:54

I think it's really sad that some people need the threat of police action in order to do the right thing.

I dread to think how many of our population would fare in something like a war.

It isn't about whether there'll be police in the remote parts of the country. And it isn't about whether the law is exhaustive and covers every single scenario as an exclusive point.

It's about being told to limit the amount of times we leave our homes, as there is no zero risk for anybody, and it's just the responsible thing to do in order to protect those who may be coming into contact with this virus second hand, completely unnecessarily, despite doing all they can to avoid it.

We are driving 2 miles to an enclosed garden of an empty house for ds's exercise. We could in theory walk there but that would mean pushing his wheelchair up a steep hill on a narrow pavement with him trying to grab at people and spitting constantly through anxiety. Driving is safer.

I also might sometimes go for a walk very early in the morning to relieve the stress of being a punchbag all day. We are at the extreme end of need but sometimes at the extreme end there needs to be adjustment.

WelcomeToShootingStars · 30/03/2020 11:55

Oh and I, like many others I'm certain, had no idea there was a specific section for coronavirus posts.

North Yorks Police are doing spot checks. Their policy very clearly includes "travelling to exercise" as non-essential

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 30/03/2020 11:57

species5618

See, people on here will argue that the law doesn't prohibit that, and that it doesn't define essential. So therefore, legally he wasn't doing anything wrong.

In fact, we are allowed to travel to provide care for a vulnerable person.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 30/03/2020 11:59

FFS just stay at home, it's that's simple.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 30/03/2020 12:00

WelcomeToShootingStars

I completely agree. I think it's very sad that some people need a law to make them do the right thing.

Kazzyhoward · 30/03/2020 12:00

To all these people driving around for non essential journeys... Would you be happy to be left to fend for yourself if you broke down or had an accident? Would you be happy for the police/ambulance/fire service to not attend to help you? If so, fine, crack on. But you're potentially putting other people at risk because you're so selfish you can't follow simple guidance not to do things that aren't essential!

bringincrazyback · 30/03/2020 12:02

Because life is complex and varied and what may seem straightforward to you may not be for someone else.

^ This.

tempester28 · 30/03/2020 12:14

I am sick of people who have no common sense and who can't think for themselves.

GreenTulips · 30/03/2020 12:16

But you're potentially putting other people at risk because you're so selfish you can't follow simple guidance not to do things that aren't essential!

Same as people out shopping or browsing non essential isles.

Bluesheep8 · 30/03/2020 12:17

For me it's simple. I am working from home. If we need anything ONE of us walks to buy it. We don't go anywhere by car. I appreciate that we are lucky to have a small supermarket in the village though.
