So Disappointed in Gordon Ramsey

Just heard the he has laid off all his 500 staff in the uk !! He has paid them until the end of April!! Why could he just not put them In forlough for 80 % of there wages which will be paid by the government. We don’t know how long this will last , people need to have hope that they have a job to go back to when this madness ends.

I really thought the Gordon was better then this !! Just so so disappointed in him!!

but the difference is one is misleading by stating he will support them all, the other is a notice of dismissal

There is nothing misleading in the first one at all. He paid them all full pay which is support. The second mentions a support line. They can now claim benefits.

🤷🏻‍♀️ It's not clear what the fuck people expected him and all the other employers to do.

JaneEyre7 · 29/03/2020 10:28

People are incredibly ignorant about the furloughing of staff. We've had to do so, but our accountant is already very concerned about the wording of the stuff from the Government. It's clearly being labelled as a grant, which means that at some point, it will have to be paid back. By everyone, not just employers.

It's not free fucking money.

Soontobe60 · 29/03/2020 10:29

Do people honestly think that he has £50 million in his current account ready to pay people with? Most of very wealthy peoples actual wealth is tied up in property and investments. The actual hard cash they have will be much much less.
Ive never met the man, never eaten in one of his restaurants so don't feel able to make personal comments on him. He's paid his staff up to the end of April, they will be able to claim UC if needed plus look for other work in the meantime. It's shit, but it's the same for the majority of people who work in hospitality.

Taddda · 29/03/2020 10:29

@Livelovebehappy I agree. Gordon Ramsay is hardly a struggling businessman though, he's doing just fine.

Collaborate · 29/03/2020 10:29

@doofusmoof You do realise don't you that with 500 workers on an average salary of, say, £2500 a month that's £1.25m a month? And you want him to pay that out of his own pocket for a few months. Out of what? Most of his wealth will be tied up in his businesses which are right now worth nothing and have no money coming in.

doofusmoof · 29/03/2020 10:31

Someone I know does work for people who appear on the Sunday Times list and they say the wealth reported is around 10 times as high as their actual wealth.

This is true as I know someone on there but most of their wealth is tied up in stocks for example. Gordon Ramsey is unlikely to have 220m dollars that some sources cite however he's certainly a millionaire.

FlamingoAndJohn · 29/03/2020 10:33

This whole thing has shown some companies up over how little they care for their staff.

Interesting idea of being sacked so you can claim UC though. I’ll be interested to know how many people get taken back on.

doofusmoof · 29/03/2020 10:34

@Collaborate That's what I would do, he could easily raise a loan. I also doubt the average wage for his workers is 2.5k.

Fieldofgreycorn · 29/03/2020 10:34

It's clearly being labelled as a grant, which means that at some point, it will have to be paid back

Grant does not mean you have to pay back at all. That would be a loan.

Taddda · 29/03/2020 10:35

@doofusmoof you think the average monthly salary for his employees is £2500 a month?? Minimum wage for the majority, tip reliant...

doofusmoof · 29/03/2020 10:36

No I don't, far from it. Another poster stated that.

tiredvommachine · 29/03/2020 10:36

Heddon Street kitchen was lovely.

Taddda · 29/03/2020 10:36

Sorry @doofusmoof, that was for @Collaborate....obviously we agree on something...

Pulppixies · 29/03/2020 10:37

They get more than minimum wage

eyeblob · 29/03/2020 10:38

He's unreasonable for coming to.his holiday home. That is not essential travel!

Taddda · 29/03/2020 10:39

@Pulppixies not anymore Hmm

Olliephaunt4eyes · 29/03/2020 10:39

I thought those restaurants were on the edge of bankruptcy anyway. My guess is that he's sacked them because there won't be any jobs at the end for them to come back to and without the income from those restaurants being open he couldn't afford to keep servicing the debt that those restaurants will be generating by sitting there.

Summer15coming · 29/03/2020 10:40

@overnightangel

Particularly appreciated the way his claims on matches played became progressively less impressive with each lie.

doofusmoof · 29/03/2020 10:40

Wasn't there some issue with him avoiding a lot of taxes? We will all face higher taxes to pay for this fiscal intervention. Well all except the super rich.

tulipsrus · 29/03/2020 10:41

Jesus, you really have no idea of the ins and outs of his business.
If he’s paid his staff til the end of April, he’s hardly sacked them heartlessly, it’s a lot of money, more than most businesses can do right now. That’s over a month away, maybe he’ll reassess then.

bruffin · 29/03/2020 10:41

It's clearly being labelled as a grant, which means that at some point, it will have to be paid back
He obviously isnt a very good accountant if he doesnt understand what a grant is. Grants do not have to be paid back , they are not a loan.

Collaborate · 29/03/2020 10:42

£12 an hour on average, 40 hours a week. Plus employers NI at 14% comes to £547 a week which is £2371 a month. I’m sure there are many restaurant staff on not much more than minimum wage, but not everyone is on min wage and plenty will get more.

KonTikki · 29/03/2020 10:42

He's a shouty sweary man who has made his living by being incredibly rude to people on camera. People who were in no position to either defend themselves or fight back.

Nuff said !

1forsorrow · 29/03/2020 10:43

the economy isn't going to bounce back quickly & see tons of fully booked restaurants after this. I was thinking the opposite, friends and family I have been talking to have all said they can't wait for it all to be over and be able to go out for a meal or a drink. People who are lucky enough to be paid haven't got much to spend it on at the moment and will be spending some of it as soon as it ends.

WTFdidwedo · 29/03/2020 10:44

£12 an hour?! Jesus Christ what do you think restaurants pay?
