So Disappointed in Gordon Ramsey

Just heard the he has laid off all his 500 staff in the uk !! He has paid them until the end of April!! Why could he just not put them In forlough for 80 % of there wages which will be paid by the government. We don’t know how long this will last , people need to have hope that they have a job to go back to when this madness ends.

I really thought the Gordon was better then this !! Just so so disappointed in him!!

MoonahStone · 29/03/2020 10:45

It is the going to his holiday home bit that gets me too

louise5754 · 29/03/2020 10:45

He will have been advised by all the people around him. Surely the decision wouldn't have been his alone.

No one ever knows the true story.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 29/03/2020 10:45

Message 1 was for staff

Message 2 for the tax man, DWP etc.

roses2 · 29/03/2020 10:48

Gordon Ramsey pays his staff using tips not revenue generated which is why he won't get the support from the government. Completely disgraceful for a high end restaurant.

So you’re expecting GR to pay staff from his own personal wealth? You’ve clearly got no idea how businesses are run or structured

Its a choice. Some companies have bent over backward to support staff, others regard staff as commodities with no intrinsic value. Those commodities made them millionaires but the beneficiaries have no sense of responsibility in the other direction. Its a natural consequence of seeing staff as commodoties instead of people.

CottonSock · 29/03/2020 10:55

I'm also guessing they were close to going bust anyway

bruffin · 29/03/2020 10:55

He's a shouty sweary man who has made his living by being incredibly rude to people on camera. People who were in no position to either defend themselves or fight back.
The people who go on the shows know exactly what they are in for.

A month on full pay is much more than a lot of the staff would normally be entitled to as the type of staff they have are probably going to have been there under 2 years.

Devlesko · 29/03/2020 10:55

What do you expect, these people don't get where they are without standing on a few heads.
They don't give a shit about those he takes money off, or his staff.
But, people will carry on supporting all these multi millionaires by watching their shit tv programmes, paying well over the top for restaurants.

DarkDarkNight · 29/03/2020 11:04

Probably teetering close to the brink anyway. This will be a perfect excuse to shut up shop without scrutiny for many businesses. There must be catches with the 80% though, where it’s not quite as simple as it appears or why wouldn’t more places do it?

I hope we all remember afterwards the disgraceful way many very successful businesses treat their staff (looking at you Wetherspoons) and choose to go elsewhere.

LittleBearPad · 29/03/2020 11:10

What he’s done is legal, it makes sense financially but he could have done more - he has the means to not have acted so precipitously. And I do know how businesses are structured. He could easily have loaned money to his company.

Either way he would have been well-advised not to show off on social media quite so quickly nor to have run to Cornwall where resources are more stretched than in London.

Definitely

AmelieTaylor · 29/03/2020 11:11

This really is bringing out the hard of thinking.

I’ll repost this in case you missed it

Knowing people who work for him and JO I can only repeat, they were laid off with full pay until the end of April. Samw as working from home, not 80% etc.

That enables them to make UC claims etc. They have been told they will go back to work when the restaurants re open and have contacts with management teams. They have not been abandoned!*

See his two messages, one personal & one formal.

He has looked after his staff as best he’s able right now.

the people I know, that know him personally, all say he’s a decent bloke.

He’s not his TV personality.

Yes he’s had affairs, he’s not the first & wont be the last and that’s their business.

dworky · 29/03/2020 11:14

I'm not, exactly what I'd expect from him.

Christmastreedown · 29/03/2020 11:15

A lot of us already been made redundant or have a pay cut. I think it's cheaper for business owners to make the cut now than waiting for the 80% grant to kick in if they manage any.

People seems to expect everyone should act like a charity to them even when they are better off themselves.

bruffin · 29/03/2020 11:16

It's clearly being labelled as a grant, which means that at some point, it will have to be paid back
He obviously isnt a very good accountant if he doesnt understand what a grant is. Grants do not have to be paid back , they are not a loan.

I am going to add to what i said, in that the government will have to claw back through tax system , but the whole purpose of a grant is that it does not have to be paid back unless it its not used for the purpose of the grant.

doofusmoof · 29/03/2020 11:17

That enables them to make UC claims etc

could you live on UC with a months notice? I'm not sure I could.

They have been told they will go back to work when the restaurants re open and have contacts with management teams. They have not been abandoned!

When is this then? Is restaurant reopenings guaranteed?

LittleBearPad · 29/03/2020 11:17

Amelie people are allowed to disagree. It doesn’t mean we can’t think.

I’m not sure where his affairs come into it - although they do support the presumption that he’s not a nice character.

His response to the Sunday Times food critic on Twitter proved his unpleasant character too.

SoupDragon · 29/03/2020 11:18

How do you know he could "easily" have loaned his company enough money to make a difference? Are you his financial adviser or accountant?

Womenwotlunch · 29/03/2020 11:21

He probably will be aware of this thread. His wife is probably a mumsnetter

Christmastreedown · 29/03/2020 11:23

I think he is very good by offering people jobs back when thus is over. I wish my company would do the same.

Coffeeandnutrients · 29/03/2020 11:26

Will never know the full story unless you’re Gordon himself

Dita73 · 29/03/2020 11:28

He’s a notorious arsehole. Cheated on his wife for years and fell out with his father in law over money. Not surprised at this

doofusmoof · 29/03/2020 11:30

Only on mumsnet can you be a CF on one thread for not paying your childminder full fees when they are closed & if you don't then expect to find another childminder. Then on another thread be grateful that a millionaire has given you a months notice & laid you off!

zombieapocalypseisnigh · 29/03/2020 11:30

He's always come across and a vile, selfish twat.
