So Disappointed in Gordon Ramsey

Nanalisa60 · 29/03/2020 04:48

Just heard the he has laid off all his 500 staff in the uk !! He has paid them until the end of April!! Why could he just not put them In forlough for 80 % of there wages which will be paid by the government. We don’t know how long this will last , people need to have hope that they have a job to go back to when this madness ends.

I really thought the Gordon was better then this !! Just so so disappointed in him!!

He’s a wonderful cook and he’s opened great restaurants but if you watch him talking to someone quick witted he’s can’t match them. He’s left blustering

LittleBearPad · 29/03/2020 17:46

Not bright? Yet a world famous multi millionaire?

The one isn’t required for the other

480Widdio · 29/03/2020 17:51

He is loathed in Cornwall, the same as Rick Stein. My son is a chef in North Cornwall, nobody local wants anything to do with either of them..

The General Public are finding out what the Cornish have known for years. Both men are egotistical twats.

mooboy · 29/03/2020 18:04

Yes he never comes across as very intelligent. Street smart, wonderful cook but he’s not bright. Why does this matter? He's talented and is a successful restaurateur - he has succeeded in his career to an amazing degree - yet you feel the need to point out his lack of intellect...it's a weird angle to take but you seem to be quite committed to it. Have eaten in his restaurants a couple of times - even got invited into the kitchens to be shown around, which I loved! - Very calm and peaceful - couldn't be anything else when they had guests dine in there too. I feel for his staff.

KatherineJaneway · 29/03/2020 18:06

@480Widdio

Out of interest, why is Rick Stein loathed?

ralphwreckedit · 29/03/2020 18:09

Not bright? Yet a world famous multi millionaire?

Do you think Donald Trump is bright?

XingMing · 29/03/2020 18:31

Just read page one, but his business interests employ too many people to qualify for the small business income replacement at 80% at government/taxpayers expense. Do the sums, his restaurants cant open now but I would put a sizeable sum down to say that he's promised to re-employ most of them when the tide turns. Because otherwise he has lost all the skill and knowledge in his kitchen, and it is really hard to replace. Unless you like food, and understand the precision of the skills involved in making food to a Michelin rating, then it sounds very trivial, but he runs restaurants that people consider destinations. The reservation at a particular restaurant may be the pivot for a whole holiday.

I don't wish to be disparaging, but if your idea of a treat meal is fish and chips, or a steak, or a carvery lunch, then you are never going to understand the mindset of people who will book lunch three months ahead and expect to spend £90- per person for the pleasure, and who will be pleased to have spent it and see it as good value. It is the difference between the gourmet and the gourmand.

StripeyDeckchair · 29/03/2020 18:36

How do you think he got rich?
It wasnt by being nice to people.
All restaurants were struggling before C19 so its jolly convenient for him to have an excuse to get out altogether.

BossAssBitch · 29/03/2020 18:42

GR is an odious creature.

Bunnyfuller · 29/03/2020 18:44

He was an embarrassment on that show he got his daughter into. Even America is bored of his one trick pony of being a rude twat.

XingMing · 29/03/2020 18:47

Gordon Ramsay will be back once the dust has settled, because it's what he does. My DS has worked for 18 months in top end food and apart from the hours (appalling) adored the life and the skills and passion that made it possible. He's off to learn a new set of skills in September, but I would put money on him going back to food sometime. We ALL have to eat.

Pulppixies · 29/03/2020 18:48

bossassbitch

You don’t exactly sound very nice yourself

Purpletigers · 29/03/2020 18:50

I’m not surprised . He’s looking after number one . Perhaps when this is over, people will remember those who didn’t fight for their employees.
A boycott of his future ventures would be a start .

Purpletigers · 29/03/2020 18:51

Xing - we don’t have to eat in overpriced restaurants. Perhaps people will stop glammering over glorified cooks .

Purpletigers · 29/03/2020 18:58

Xing- you are being disparaging.

Purpletigers · 29/03/2020 18:59

I would question my sanity if I didn’t question someone who booked a lunch three months ahead and spent £100 on it .

XingMing · 29/03/2020 19:05

Of course we don't @purpletigers. I am really fussy about where I spend money to buy food, but they have to cook a lot better than I do, and I am told that I am a very good cook. Rule of thumb... I don''t even bother eating out unless the food is vastly better than I can make at home. I can buy any ingredients I want locally with a few stops around my (foodie) high street.

Your definition of overpriced and mine might differ: I would see Maccies or any fast food restaurant as overpriced, because I am not willing to pay for the brand and advertising to support it, but I would happily pay much more, less frequently, to eat exquisitely prepared and presented food.

penisbeakers · 29/03/2020 19:08

You've seen the way he talks to people in his shows, and you thought he was better than this?

LOL

Yes they have been horribly treated, but he's an awful awful man on a normal day. I'd have expected nothing less.

XingMing · 29/03/2020 19:17

I was planning on our summer holiday (cancelled now) to book a table for six at a restaurant in Spain that is currently regarded as being among the world's top three restaurants, for lunch (cheaper than dinner). Once we have new dates, I shall book for 2021, and it will be awesome. It's about food that you could not reproduce at home. We have professional chef skills between DS and I, and I will be thrilled to spend the money to eat there. But I would not spend £2.50 to eat rubbish,, unless I had no alternative.

mooboy · 29/03/2020 19:22

business interests employ too many people to qualify for the small business income replacement at 80% at government/taxpayers expense The 80% salary grant is not dependent on the size of your business - if you had staff working under contract on 28 Feb they are very likely to qualify but you have to pay them first and claim back the money.

XingMing · 29/03/2020 19:24

Back to GR, he can't be an awful man. He has nurtured far too many brilliant chefs and restaurateurs to be so awful. A really tough criticism is a formative experience. You learn to do better.

Purpletigers · 29/03/2020 19:24

Xing - perhaps after this is all over people will see the value in cooking locally sourced quality food at home instead of eating mediocre restaurant food and calling it a treat .

I actually don’t mind fast food occasionally. You get what you pay for imo . I dislike the chain restaurant type places which are essentially fast food with waiter service . I agree with you on the less often but better quality restaurants. Perhaps the whole industry will get the massive shake up it needs .

XingMing · 29/03/2020 19:26

I think only businesses employing under 250 people are eligible.

And GR may be hard, but it doesn't make him awful.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 29/03/2020 19:26

Surely a month of pay (for no work) to all employees is a GOOD THING? I don't understand the negativity.

MsTSwift · 29/03/2020 19:27

He is an amazing cook though. Wide eyed moves from south west to large firm in the City I was taken to lunch at his Brompton Road restaurant. Popped to loo and there he was in the kitchen cooking - year 2001. The food was exquisite to be fair.
