Just heard the he has laid off all his 500 staff in the uk !! He has paid them until the end of April!! Why could he just not put them In forlough for 80 % of there wages which will be paid by the government. We don’t know how long this will last , people need to have hope that they have a job to go back to when this madness ends.

I really thought the Gordon was better then this !! Just so so disappointed in him!!

So who exactly are these companies who are bending over backwards for their staff? And for how long?

My company is doing quite well so far. CEO has taken a voluntary 50% pay cut, the board I think have taken a 30% cut and they are topping up our salaries, not to 100% but they are topping us up above the government cap to 80%.

How long for though; who knows. Who knows how long this will last and how long the service industry, which is also fairly reliant on the tourist industry, will take to recover.

Google alerts won't bring this thread to his attention because nobody's spelled his name correctly yet

Let's keep it that way Grin

thewinkingprawn · 29/03/2020 13:24

I am slightly laughing that he’d care what a tiny minority of Mumsnetters who have never met him think 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Legoandloldolls · 29/03/2020 13:29

I'm not convinced the economy will bounce back either.

I'm going to be making tough choices after this with my personal finances. Plus business was folding daily on my high street before this.

I cant see anything immediately bouncing back.

GR wise In my experience only areseholes make it to the top. Maybe that's true for him? Who knows

Lepetitpiggy · 29/03/2020 13:30

DS is at university with his son... and isn't impressed!

Mixingitall · 29/03/2020 13:43

The business may not have enough cash flow to furlough the employees. There will be a gap between paying 80% to employees now and the government actually paying it to the employer.

Also, although the government have announced the furlough worker scheme, they have meant given any advice to payroll providers or businesses on how this will work, it is taking a few weeks for this to trickle down. Perhaps the wait is too long for businesses with no income, and high over heads.

Ffs

I've met him. Nothing like his TV persona and the food at Hospital Rd is ambrosial.

I hope he's able to re-hire very soon when this is all over.

These grants are not free money you know. You need to listen carefully the the Chancellor. This money will have to be paid back at some point.

milksoffagain · 29/03/2020 14:09

I like him. He is gentle with the kids on his shows

tulipsrus · 29/03/2020 14:10

Houses are mortgaged, businesses typically have massive loans already.
Famous people do not have £20m sitting in the bank

tulipsrus · 29/03/2020 14:11

Do not necessarily have £20m in the bank.
Some might have

EvilPea · 29/03/2020 14:14

The furlough money is not immediate. My dh (self employed, but furloughed one vulnerable employee)) has had to cover the weeks until it kicks in.

How is this in any way relevant to this thread? You don’t sound too impressive yourself - repeating your son’s opinion of the child of a TV chef.

I have a friend who met him on a social occasion, didnt really even know who he was, other than a chef on the tv in programmes she doesnt watch and said he was really lovely.

newnortherner1 · 29/03/2020 15:03

I never liked the foul mouthed Rangers reject, and this just adds another reason to the list.

demelzaaa · 29/03/2020 15:12

AA Gill was an odious little man who took every opportunity to look down on those who weren’t his kind. With 62 complaints to the PCC in 5 years, he was the kind of “controversial” writer who knew how to keep himself in the public eye and didn’t care who he used in that.

He was an exceptionally amusing writer with a poet's love of the language. I find it asinine to dismiss a critic because of the number of complaints his work attracted, but you do you.

It is equally asinine to dismiss the number of complaints just because he phrased things poetically.

demelzaaa · 29/03/2020 15:23

Nope. If someone's an honest critic, feathers will be ruffled.

And of course the quality of his writing mattered.

stayathomegardener · 29/03/2020 15:28

Goodness I accidentally started a rumour on here he was dead once but had to get it pulled myself.

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 29/03/2020 16:40

I also want to see the deletion message.

I also think he is not a nice man.

Postmanbear · 29/03/2020 16:48

He came across as a nasty piece of work on Ant and Dec last night.

Mymomsbetterthanyomom · 29/03/2020 17:13

I personally can't respect a man with such a limited vocabulary.

LittleBearPad · 29/03/2020 17:15

Yes he never comes across as very intelligent. Street smart, wonderful cook but he’s not bright.

Not bright? Yet a world famous multi millionaire?
