Nanalisa60 · 29/03/2020 04:48

Just heard the he has laid off all his 500 staff in the uk !! He has paid them until the end of April!! Why could he just not put them In forlough for 80 % of there wages which will be paid by the government. We don’t know how long this will last , people need to have hope that they have a job to go back to when this madness ends.

I really thought the Gordon was better then this !! Just so so disappointed in him!!

I'd be fascinated to see the deletion message

To qualify staff have to be salaried, and I imagine he has a lot on hours only contracts. To furlough them they would have to be transferred onto salaried contracts, and then average wage calculations carried out for each one.

That's not quite right. I work for Greene King. They've furloughed their hourly paid staff, they have worked it out on their average pay for the last 12 weeks including troncs. No contracts have had to be changed.

tulipsrus · 29/03/2020 12:16

Only his accountant knows how much money he has.
The internet tells me my Dad has a net worth Of $20m.
He has no income and about £5k in the bank
Why does everyone believe what they read?

Here for the deletion message.

It would be hard for Gordon Ramsey to disappoint me - my expectations are very very low.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/03/2020 12:20

" They've furloughed their hourly paid staff, they have worked it out on their average pay for the last 12 weeks"

Yes, even zero hours people are included in the schemes.

Posting for the deletion message....

However, he is a businessman. You don’t get a £50 million business without making decisions like cutting costs where-ever possible.

PinkandOrange · 29/03/2020 12:31

I thought he had a reputation of being good to his staff.

SoupDragon · 29/03/2020 12:31

Equally you don’t know he doesn’t have some cash on hand more than he has done.

It's very unlikely he has enough cash on hand to pay the salary of all his employees without the income from the restaurants.

doofusmoof · 29/03/2020 12:34

I agree most of his wealth would come from TV deals, the restaurants probably don't make much

SlipSlidin · 29/03/2020 12:38

I thought he’d had to get his FIL to bail him out several times?

FWIW I like him, enjoy his tv shows and find him entertaining. His oldest son Jack came across very well in a recent reality show about how poor income families struggle to get out of poverty.

Pigsnduvets · 29/03/2020 12:39

And he drove down to his holiday home in Cornwall during lockdown. Asshole

Wheresthebeach · 29/03/2020 12:39

I would assume that the extremely wealthy have the ability to borrow more easily than the rest of us - not like the interest rates are an issue. If he want to then he could have done something better than bailing on day ... what 7 of lockdown? I think we are seeing the super wealthy falling into two distinct camps - those using their wealth to help (hotels being opened to nhs staff for example) and those looking after number 1. I sincerely hope that nobody shops at sports direct after this is all over..

doofusmoof · 29/03/2020 12:39

Why does everyone believe what they read?

I grew up near his London home, easily worth 7m plus in a recession. Then there's the Cornwall & LA homes. Of course he's unlikely to have what's cited but if you can buy a £4m holiday home & demolish to build a bigger one you're not short of a few bob.

bananafish · 29/03/2020 12:41

Hmmm - I think he’s actually pretty good with people and is fantastic at inspiring his staff. The bully thing is for the cameras; for drama. You can see he uses the carrot far more than the stick - look at him on junior MasterChef for example. I doubt you get to be as successful as he is by just being an out and out prick.
He could have laid off staff immediately, but he didn’t. He’s given them a bit of a lifeline. do you know what it’s like to keep payroll going? Is he meant to bankrupt himself? how’s that going to help when this is all over?

Won’t the deletion msg just say “this isn’t in the spirit of MN” ?

justasking111 · 29/03/2020 12:58

I am wondering when all this is over who will have the money to eat out, looking at my extended family of three generations, none of us. We will be back to our student days, curry sauce, rice and a bottle of plonk with mates in our sixties.

FizzyGreenWater · 29/03/2020 13:05

Every single thing I've ever heard about him has made him sound like a complete bellend. No change here.

WTFdidwedo · 29/03/2020 13:08

Vinosaurus a lot of hospitality workers would only have to give a week or two's notice, it's normally a week for every year they've worked there and it's a high turnover industry. The end of April is actually fairly generous for hospitality.

RightOnTheEdge · 29/03/2020 13:10

JD Wetherspoon haven't sacked any of their staff all have been furloughed and will be getting paid the 80% staring next Friday.

Only the pub managers up are salaried everyone is is paid hourly so you don't need to be on a salaried contract.

I’m bored and here for the deletion message.

thewinkingprawn · 29/03/2020 13:16

Oh for gods sake - no business is doing this to be nasty - there’s a bloody depression coming for gods sake. No one is going to have the money to subsidise payroll and we all know that we are going to have to make redundancies regardless of whether it is now or post the next couple of months of support. I actually think it is very generous to pay up to then end of April. We run a business that will likely go under. The amount of well meaning advice about taking loans (which we will never be able to pay back) and about what to do with staff is just flabbergasting. You literally have no idea unless you actually run a business in that industry and sector of that industry so all of you need to stop your arm chair commentary.
