to feel for the USA under Trump at the moment

I know that there are divisions here. Johnson could have done better. But our briefings aren't political and generally everyone is working together.

Anyone who is following Trump and the USA at the moment will know that division is rife in the USA. Trump is still talking about fake news and is using his briefings as a rally.

I just feel for people in the USA at the moment having to deal with all this as well as the virus.

It's hard to think or a worse person to be in charge during a crisis like this.

LAlady · 28/03/2020 12:58

It's like watching a car crash every time he does a press briefing. Very scary times.

NotSorry · 28/03/2020 13:01

I had to adjust my TV set yesterday, he’s obviously had a tan top up he was looking so orange - he is a complete embarrassment

runwithme · 28/03/2020 13:01

I agree. People in America must feel so helpless. Why isn't he being challenged?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 28/03/2020 13:01

Sadly, it is all too easy. He is President of Brazil, the one who thinks Leonardo di Caprio is setting the jungle on fire.

Grumpbum123 · 28/03/2020 13:01

Trump is an utter bellend

thenightsky · 28/03/2020 13:14

I cringe when I see him speaking. The shite that comes out of his mouth appears to have bypassed the brain. I do wonder if he is in the early stages of dementia though.

I suppose the Americans must love him though, after all they did vote for him in droves.

sueelleker · 28/03/2020 13:31

I have visions of him doing a King Canute, and standing at the border telling coronavirus to go away.

MonkeyDishwasher · 28/03/2020 13:50

They get what they deserve, they voted for him!

tegucigalpa13 · 28/03/2020 13:54

....but his approval ratings are going up

AlternativePerspective · 28/03/2020 13:58

His most classic quote throughout this I’ve seen was: “people are going to die who have never died before.” Grin Shock Hmm

He’s not right in the head. He should have a spokesperson who keeps him away from the microphone... and social media.

Apparently he believes that the lockdowns are specifically to damage his election chances.

midwesteaster · 28/03/2020 14:04

Trump is a total numpty.
Happily I have a good Governor and a decent Mayor.
I've been in a lockdown for a while and it is a more stringent one than the UK currently has.
Trump doesn't have as much power as he likes to think. He also is agreeing financial packages whatever he says on the podium.

BritWifeinUSA · 28/03/2020 14:08

Don’t believe everything you see on TV or the Internet. Remember that the United States is exactly that - 50 different states each with their own government. It’s our own state governments that decide what things are done in that state and what rules the residents of that state have to follow, what measures are in place. Trump has less to do with it than you think. You are under the impression that a president is like the prime minister of the UK, but it’s a very different set-up here.

I can’t believe people in the UK are bothered about things like this when the death rate per million in the UK from Coronavirus is more than double what it is here. 11 people per million have died in the UK so far. 5 per million here and our first case was10 days before yours. We have far more ICU beds per 1000 and far more ventilators per thousand. Our supermarkets aren’t bare. You won’t see American nurses posting videos online in tears because they can’t get any food after their shift. And you’re worried about Trump’s speeches? Seriously, the UK really needs to wake up.

Sihaya · 28/03/2020 14:09

A friend in NY runs a small business with her husband and a handful of employees. She told me they've lost tens of thousands of dollars and only has enough money to keep the business going for 3 months without government aid. And if they lose the business, they lose their health insurance too.

sonjadog · 28/03/2020 14:11

Yes, I feel very sad that the US is facing this with Trump in charge. Also Brazil with their leader.

PerkingFaintly · 28/03/2020 14:14

Trump has just signed a 2 trillion dollar bailout package put to him by Congress. So he does have a little to do with it, and so does the national government.

And do what?! The premise is to sit at home. We are awake. We’ve over 400,000 volunteers to help the nhs.
We are fully awake. But I’m unsure what you think we should be doing?

startrek90 · 28/03/2020 14:14

I do feel for the citizens of the USA, let's not forget 3 million more of them voted for the other candidate, and he had russian help. The majority did not want him as president and are now stuck with him in one of the worst situations they could imagine. Add in that 40% of them have no health insurance and the very patchy local responses because of the States and you have a recipe for disaster. Whilst some governors and mayor's are doing their best, some are refusing to do even the most basic sort of responses. Quite a few don't believe in science, and even fewer leaders value lives over dollars. I have even seen a deputy governor (from texas?) suggest letting this virus kill of the elderly as it would save the economy and be cheaper in the long run.

theoldtrout01876 · 28/03/2020 14:17

We didnt all vote for him and we certainly dont all love him.
I am very lucky that our state governor seems to be on the ball
And yeah we may have more ICU beds etc per 1000 but are we talking the 1000 that can afford it or the rest of us here?
Oh and my supermarket was pretty bare couple weeks ago too. Seems to be ok now but limits on certain things
This country so called leadership is a shambles. So normal people just keep their head down and hope he goes away

TSSDNCOP · 28/03/2020 14:19

He's an annoying distraction. What the hell has he done with Dr Fauci though?

The mayor of NY looks like a man staring down the barrel of a gun every time he's interviewed.

What happens if you run out of money because you've lost your job or you lose your job and your healthcare gets withdrawn Brit?

Totally OTT Monkey

Yes it will be a disasters but I don’t know how, even with the best leadership, disaster could/ would have been diverted. Whilst an individual may obtain good care in the US the whole of the health care system is a disaster in the face of an epidemic.

Even at times like this hospitals and doctors need to be able to charge correctly. It is so ingrained in everything they do and insurance companies are so slow to adapt and accept change.

The 17 year old who died was refused care at the centre he presented to because of lack of insurance to and was referred elsewhere - he arrested en route. There is now a scramble to prove it wasn’t Covid that killed him. People will be turned away and die in the streets.

Whilst monkeydishwasher was a little harsh I just watched a video of a nurse in Michigan who is crying after her shift as she is alone in ICU and they don't have supplies. My best friend in Utah sent me pictures of the bare shops.

So @BritWifeinUSA methinks you are not quite telling the truth. I am not in the UK but I can see in my country and in the UK that the government seems to be taking this seriously and are trying their best. Which frankly is a damn sight better that Trump or any of his sycophants
