to feel for the USA under Trump at the moment

I know that there are divisions here. Johnson could have done better. But our briefings aren't political and generally everyone is working together.

Anyone who is following Trump and the USA at the moment will know that division is rife in the USA. Trump is still talking about fake news and is using his briefings as a rally.

I just feel for people in the USA at the moment having to deal with all this as well as the virus.

Really hope this will show the American public that the man is a fool, and he’s a businessman not a politician

midwesteaster · 28/03/2020 14:46

The USA has a very federalized system.
It is more like the President of the EU having more powers and each EU country having a little less.
The situation varies widely from state to state, both in terms of the risks and the solutions.
Yes, it would obviously be helpful if anyone other than Trump was currently president including Pence.
Overall in my State we have been taking this more seriously for longer than the UK has.

sonjadog · 28/03/2020 14:47

Monkey´s post wasn't "a little harsh", it was extremely rude and unpleasant.

DateAndWalnuts · 28/03/2020 14:53

Yanbu...they're fucked!

MonkeyDishwasher · 28/03/2020 14:54

@sonjadog ah well, just like your average Yank then, huh?!

Bojo1 · 28/03/2020 14:55

monkeydishwasher

Very harsh and for what’s it worth, I love America. So no, everyone doesn’t hate it

midwesteaster · 28/03/2020 14:55

@MonkeyDishwasher honestly behave.
It is neither big nor clever as the GM used to say.

Laniakea · 28/03/2020 14:55

Fucking hell Shock I hope MonkeyDishwasher gets suspended for that.

Blimey just when I thought mn couldn’t get any worse.

VeryQuaintIrene · 28/03/2020 14:57

Yes, he's god-awful. though at the state level, some governors are doing really well in hard circumstances. I'm in North Carolina with a smart governor and we have fairly strict restrictions about leaving home: we are a big state and proportionately to our population we don't have too many cases as yet and I hope that this will continue if people are smart and stay home.

"Escape From New York"

Turns out it was a documentary.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/03/2020 17:40

I have always felt for the USA, having him as President.

Going from Obama to him was the dictionary definition of the sublime to the ridiculous.

WeakAndWeary · 28/03/2020 17:46

His most classic quote throughout this I’ve seen was: “people are going to die who have never died before.”

Snopes is a wonderful resource for this sort of thing

Didn't Happen

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 17:46

He is just so partisan at the moment.

Do you think anyone is telling him that his attitude is divisive?

OP posts:
Livelovebehappy · 28/03/2020 17:48

Trump’s popularity over there is increasing so I guess he must be doing something right.

Livelovebehappy · 28/03/2020 17:52

alternativeperspective fake news. Please do your research before posting.

awaynboilyurheid · 28/03/2020 17:54

I disagree its increasing, I've seen the tide turn with friends and relatives in the USA who voted for him, perhaps now they see what we see...
Its like a dictatorship, Dr Fauci no longer allowed to be in view when Trump giving his bizarre speeches.

HelloToMyKitty · 28/03/2020 17:56

I think you should worry more about the situation in the U.K.; the bailout package looks great and US healthcare is very good. Anyone can access it (you would get an outrageous bill after).

The two doctors that appear with him seem very measured and competent.

ocarinan · 28/03/2020 17:57

Anyone can access it (you would get an outrageous bill after).

So not everyone can access it, really.

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 17:59

@livelovebehappy

What do you think of his comments to the NBC reporter who asked him about the message he had to send to the American people at this time?

What do you think of his unorthodox approach to clinical trials of the anti-malarial drug? Yes - it's safe, but there is little evidence if it works, what level to have it at and what patients to try it on - I know he thinks it can be done quickly but drug trials don't work like that.

Yes - people need hope but realism as well.

Open by Easter. 15 days to stop the spread.

Oh - and do you think this is a good message about social distancing? The actual clip has them with a shared pen as well.

News to you - we have socialised medicine that is free at the point of delivery that everyone can access.

Although it is under demand at the moment.

11 people per million have died in the UK so far. 5 per million here and our first case was10 days before yours. We have far more ICU beds per 1000 and far more ventilators per thousand.

Early days. US citizens are losing their health insurance along with their jobs, remember. There’s still a proportion of the population who think the virus is a Democrat hoax and/or that Jesus will protect them, so aren’t social distancing. Trump is playing power games with state governors, wanting a quid pro quo for sending them federal help, and insulting eg the Michigan Governor quite openly. Still sowing division, fear and confusion in the midst of a terrible crisis.

Bojo may be a lazy, arrogant liar whose party has chipped away at every safety net in UK society every chance they got but even he isn’t going to actively try to withhold medical supplies from people unless they suck up to him.

The US has handled this appallingly and it will get worse.

DetroitLake · 28/03/2020 18:07

Actually, the majority didn't vote for him. 2.9 million more voted for Clinton. Thank to the electoral college we got screwed. Many people didn't vote at all given the choice between Clinton and Trump.

Monkeydishwasher,I truly hope you and your family get through this unharmed, and it makes you a more compassionate person

Grocery stores in the state I'm in are very bare and prices have gone up. Not an egg to be found, for instance. No pasta, no rice, canned goods low. Milk very low. No non organic vegetables left, very few organic veg. It's getting a bit scary, or at least was when I was last out. I got agressively coughed on on one of my last trips. Tensions are running high, tp has become the new gold standard.

I get Brits don't generally like America very much, but generally the feeling is not mutual. We are all in the shit right now, it's not a competition.

I do hope you guys are doing as well as can be expected in the UK and things get back to normal soon.

SpaceCadet4000 · 28/03/2020 18:08

I'm in the USA in a Trump-voting state. He's a complete idiot and is not helping but so much of this is dependent on the response of each State. It is shocking that he's still being his usual narcissistic self though.

Frustratingly, I'm in Missouri where the governor seems to want to do the bare minimum despite our significant older, rural population having appallingly low access to healthcare. He's devolved the response to the city-level, meaning much of the state isn't covered by a stay-at-home order, he routinely plays down the danger of the virus, and he hasn't mandated for bars and restaurants to close.

DetroitLake · 28/03/2020 18:11

The bars and restaurants are still open in Missouri! I'm so sorry space cadet! Your governor sounds incompetent at best. How are you holding up?

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 18:13

The US is a massive country - so you should look at more localised statistics to get a better picture.

New York: 728 deaths in a an 8 million city

72 deaths per million
London
180 deaths in a 9 million city

20 deaths per million
