to feel for the USA under Trump at the moment

I know that there are divisions here. Johnson could have done better. But our briefings aren't political and generally everyone is working together.

Anyone who is following Trump and the USA at the moment will know that division is rife in the USA. Trump is still talking about fake news and is using his briefings as a rally.

I just feel for people in the USA at the moment having to deal with all this as well as the virus.

The one blessing in this chaos is that Andrew Cuomo (the governor of NY and a Democrat) is handling the situation with calm, professionalism and intelligence. Many people are hoping he will become a serious contender for President, if not this time round, then in 2024.

I’m also a Brit in the US (CT suburbs) and have experienced nothing but excellent care at the hospitals here. If I want to go and see a dermatologist, say, my insurance requires no referral, I’ll get an appointment within two weeks and it’ll cost me $20 as a co-pay. A friend of mine had “Husky” state insurance when she was unemployed a couple of years ago, and she paid nothing for giving birth and having bowel issues that required a lengthy hospital stay. As it should be, I might add, but it’s not a clear cut case of being poor in the US means zero health insurance, although sadly I appreciate it is the reality for a few.

^^That should read, “...more than a few.”

“President Trump is a ratings hit. Since reviving the daily White House briefing Mr. Trump and his coronavirus updates have attracted an average audience of 8.5 million on cable news, roughly the viewership of the season finale of ‘The Bachelor.’ Numbers are continuing to rise..

Glad to see he's got his priorities straight.

Ahaha. I was just going to post that too Grin Can people just type out the state in full? Its not as though we are texting and being economic with characters.

KickAssAngel · 29/03/2020 20:39

MI = Michigan (Where Detroit is).

Google it for the full run-down. I know them when I see them but there are a few I have to think about

MN - Minnesota
MS Mississippi

KickAssAngel · 29/03/2020 20:42

We'll write the states in full if you-all write "Her Majesty's United Kingdom" in full. Smile

People just don't. It's too automatic to put the letters.

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 20:45

MI is confusing though Grin

Michigan
Minnesota
Missouri
Mississippi

I think there was a Who Wants to be a Millionaire and they had to work out how many States began with 'M'

Montana (MT)!

Acidburn · 29/03/2020 21:26

Some people didn't specifically vote for Trump, but they didn't want to vote for Hillary. If I was American I would never vote for her.

HoldMyLobster · 29/03/2020 21:33

Tbf you can’t really blame anyone who types MA rather than Massachusetts....

flyingspaghettimonster · 29/03/2020 22:49

I'm in Philly. Our governor is taking things a little more seriously than Trump, nut leaving everything later than I would like. I took my kids out of school a few days before he decided to close them, and I lost a huge amount of respect for him when he he decided sales of guns was a life sustaining industry. For who?? We could end up in a worst case scenario where food deliver is massively disrupted due to all the sick truckers and factory/warehouses shutting, fsrm workers getting sick etc. Yet lets see gun sales rise massively right before looting becomes an issue???

I don't live in a good neighbourhood. My street isn't awful, but the guy 2 doors down was shot and killed last year outside the Corner store, and this was barely news for a day. People get shot in this city mutliple times in a normal week. I am scared for the lawlessness and chaos that might occur when hospitals fill up and people want their grandma on a ventilator... in england we tend to be so stoical about medical issues, and bow down to the opinions of medical personnel. If they tell us they can no longer help people over a certain age or with certain conditions, we might be distraught and angry, but I doubt people will attempt to kill doctors over it. I strongly suspect that could happen here.

I bought almost 2 months of supplies at the end of February because I knew when COVID19 got out of China that America would be fucked. I stocked up our asthma meds for a few months too. But as foreign nationals we can't buy guns, and nor would I ever want one. So i am glad we have 2 big dogs because maybe at some point people will start trying to break in for food.

650,000 new unemployed claims went in for our state last week. People need more than $1,200 and a pat on the shoulder, but right now they all seem to think Trump is golden for offering them that. I have seen multiple people barely capable of a coherent facebook post state they will vote for him.because he is paying them, like he is signing each cheque personally. Puke making.

That's not all Americans, though. Almost zero of the many Americans I have spent time with over my 14 years here have anything good to say about trump. I am concerned that Biden is winning the primaries though. I don't think he has shown the slightest bit of good leadership or example since things got hairy here. In fact, I've barely seen sight nor sound of him in weeks. Bernie meanwhile is tirelessly crusading to get funding and supplies to help. If he were put up against trump he would win. I wish the DNC could accept that.

I kind of wish COVID19 would take out many of the current government here... and i feel like a hateful bitch for even thinking it. And of course it won't anyhow, because they have fancy hospitals and ventilators with their names on them. Ugh.

TKAAHUARTG · 29/03/2020 23:08

Why would we use a name you just made up though?

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 23:23

Given their views on social distancing, it's quite likely someone will pass it around.

Sorry, but your street really IS awful Shock WTF?

PickAChew · 29/03/2020 23:29

It's almost like the guy wants to kill people. He's an absolute loon and really fucking dangerous.

KickAssAngel · 29/03/2020 23:38

Ok - leave her maj out of it - United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland instead, then.

Actually, I thought that when the Queen got formally announced she got the whole "Her Majesty's United Kingdom ..." but it's probably Her Majesty, the Queen of the United Kingdom ... or something along those lines. But - In the UK, that acronym is known well enough to use without explanation, but in the US, the States' acronyms are equally well known.

When we first moved here, I was told at the post office that I need to write United Kingdom in full whenever I send things home, as not all postal workers would know what UK means.

MissConductUS · 29/03/2020 23:39

@Zombiemum1946

the trouble with that comparison is the US doesn't centrally collate data. Your numbers are guess work at best.

Not true.

Oh yes, and the amount that gun sales have gone up is crazy. Do people think they can shoot the virus? It's just such a stupid response, I feel threatened, therefore I need a gun. As if all those kids staying home won't find it and play with it?

Osirus · 29/03/2020 23:49

I get Brits don't generally like America very much, but generally the feeling is not mutual. We are all in the shit right now, it's not a competition.

That’s not true for everyone; I don’t know anyone who dislikes USA.

My brother lives in Atlanta and they have struggled with buying their shopping, particularly toilet rolls. He had to fashion some out of kitchen roll paper last week Grin

TSSDNCOP · 29/03/2020 23:54

I really don't think it's reasonable to ask US posters to desist from using their stat's abbreviation it's not like none of us have powers of deduction Google.

The gun thing eludes me, so many opportunities to get it under control, and now here we are in a panic situation with people that are trigger happy. That's not going to end well.

But there have been many people that have crossed my path in the UK in recent days. You know the types that are are on their feet the nano-second wheels are down hauling their wheelie bags out and near-decapitating kids? Now they're the ones leaning across you for blueberries in the supermarket.
