hey will be asked if their report concerns rule-breaking by an individual, group, or business, on what street, and at what date and time - by the minute.

It comes as police forces across the country face charges of 'overzealousness' from ex-MPs, lawyers, and human-rights groups this week.

Wow...

I guess they could have eaten the dog - would have saved the food trip to M&S and the Wilko's trip.

This is Cleveland police’s Information. I understood we were allowed to go out for to buy food, exercise as you kept social distance, medical appointments, work, caring for vulnerable people

New Powers are introduced to Enforce Protection

New powers are being introduced to help police enforce protection during the coronavirus outbreak.

Under the powers given to police, no-one will be allowed to leave their home "without reasonable excuse" and officers can ensure that people stay at home, avoid non-essential travel, police will be able to order people to go home, leave an area or disperse.

The new powers mean officers can:
• ensure parents are doing all they can to stop their children breaking the rules

• issue a £60 fixed penalty

• issue a £120 fixed penalty for second-time offenders, doubling on each further repeat offence

Anyone who does not pay can be taken to court, with magistrates able to impose unlimited fines. If they still refuse to comply, police can arrest them.

Officers have seen large numbers of people flock to beaches and beauty spots to walk their dogs and exercise, such as Seaton Carew, Redcar and Saltburn, and some of these people have even driven from out of the area to visit them, contravening government guidance and putting communities at risk.

Chief Superintendent Thom Mcloughlin, Head of Local Policing, said: “We are urging people to adhere to the government’s guidelines and not to make unnecessary journeys. I am really disappointed that people have gone out to beaches and beauty spots to walk their dog or go for a run, putting their own lives, as well as the lives of their friends and families at risk.

“Where people are going out to exercise, they should do this in the local vicinity of their home and not travel across the county.

“Whilst we now have the powers to enforce protection in order to help save lives and protect our NHS, policing by consent is at the heart of our public service. We will continue to encourage and support our communities to comply with the restrictions, but it’s right that our officers are now able to enforce against those who disregard these measures and put others at risk.

“I would hope that the majority of our communities understand the gravity of what is happening at the moment and understand that these measures are in place for a reason, but we are prepared to, and will not hesitate to, enforce these new powers in order to protect the wider community.”

Under strict measures to fight the coronavirus outbreak announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson earlier this week, people are only allowed to leave the house for specific reasons:

• Shopping for "basic necessities", as infrequently as possible

• One form of exercise a day such as a run, walk or cycle

• Medical reasons, to provide care, or to help a vulnerable person

• Travelling to and from work, but only if it is "absolutely necessary" and cannot be done from home

One form of exercise a day such as a run, walk or cycle

They really have got that wrong, haven't they.

The leglisation is clear. I totally understand the guidlines, and I am sure most people will follow the guidelines - but the law is the law.

That's the one @HelenaDove. I don't know why but there did seem something a bit off about the policeman although it seems to be genuine.

RedDiamond · 28/03/2020 19:10

My neighbours don't like me because I opposed their planning application and they had to make amendments to it. I go out every day (including weekends at the moment) to go to work. Little do they know that my company is making parts for ventilators. They don't know that but I bet they try and shop me for driving off every day. Grin

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 19:12

That video is unbelievable.

The officer has been spoken to.

Can you imagine what his colleagues think?

I suppose if it's an online form they people who fill it in won't be able to use the green ink that they use for writing to the newspapers.

HeIenaDove · 28/03/2020 19:29

My opposite neighbour will fucking love this.

Like @QuimJongUn i have to go out twice a week to food shop and to top up our key meter.

And then there is DHs medication Our surgery used to send the scripts to Boots. A while back DUE TO GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES apparently they cant do that anymore so the patient/rep has to now pick it up from surgery and take it to the pharmacist ANOTHER trip.

THESE are all we are going out to do.

KoalasandRabbit · 28/03/2020 19:41

Our village probably needs its own dedicated phone line though I'm sure there would be plenty of volunteers here in the village to answer the phones as well if needed. Just hope they don't have to keep anything confidential though. Grin The villagers could extend it to monitoring people's shopping, who is it that is taking that toilet roll, do they really need that much? I'm sure some of our neighbours will know and have probably e-mailed others about it already.

Fespital · 28/03/2020 19:52

@pippishortsocks that is literally my favourite MN diagram ever!

cologne4711 · 28/03/2020 20:10

It does not include lycra-clad leisure cycling

Tee hee. That's so funny but it sums up the attitude to cyclists in one sentence. In normal times, if I go out with a rucksack on and normal clothes, I find drivers are considerate. If I wear cycling gear, not so much. It's as if cycling as a leisure activity isn't accepted, but cycling as a form of transport is. I do kind of get that, it is irritating being stuck behind a cyclist for ages when you need to be somewhere, but tough people need to be more patient. The police should be enforcing the law, not their petty prejudices.

GoldenOmber · 28/03/2020 20:20

My town is going to loooooove that. Someone was complaining on Facebook the other day because a walker sat on a bench. 'Sitting is NOT a permitted reason to be out of the house!'

cologne4711 · 28/03/2020 20:24

Oh but Golden, they might have the virus, it might be on their clothes, they sit on the bench, it gets on the bench, someone else comes along and sits down, it gets on their clothes, they handle their clothes, touch their face, and they've got the virus too.

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 20:26

Interesting comment on the Daily Mail - if the police have all this fancy technology, why aren't they using drones to track drug dealers, criminals etc

Our under resourced police force has suddenly found a lot of resources.

Some people need reminding though, there’s a retired couple I can see from my house who had a visitor yesterday, stand right up close to them chatting for ages then leave again.

He’d driven to see them.

Inappropriatefemale · 28/03/2020 20:50

Is catching drug dealers really a priority right now? If they have all this fancy technology then why can’t they catch creeps that sit and watch children being abused, they should be able to get IP addresses and then the addresses of where the IP address is coming from.

The good thing about burglars just now is that as 100% of folks should be at home all day and all night now then it means that houses are less likely to be robbed, businesses are probably more likely to be robbed though.

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 21:00

Is catching drug dealers really a priority right now

Not now. But they must have had all this kit for a while. Looks like it could have been very effective in looking for criminals

OP posts:
HeIenaDove · 28/03/2020 21:00

drug dealers will be meeting up with someone outside their home or someone will be coming to theirs to buy drugs though.

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 28/03/2020 21:13

@HeIenaDove don't you watch any spy thrillers?! They'll be leaving them under bushes and things and in bins, more likely, at the moment!

And while I appreciate that this is such a new virus, and even the top scientists (and Imperial) are still learning how it works, and we all have to stay safe, and of course I'm complying, am I the only one that is looking at the bigger picture and thinking, all those of you who say you didn't understand how Nazi Germany rose to power, just take a look around you right now?

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 21:20

You're not the only one

I have gone from the 1930 Depression through to WW2 analogy

Just updated for the 2020 Depression

It has been worrying to see how the police have reacted. I was going to comment on one of their Twitter posts but part of me worried about it.
