That’s it really. Everyone else has to KEEP going to the shops to try and find essentials because the fucking knobheads have bough and keep buying up everything.

How can you social distance when you have to constantly hop from shop to shop for basic food for your children?! I’m in the shops more now than I was before this shitshow started.

I couldn’t give a fuck if I got Covid-19, but I don’t want my kids getting it, ever. I have to leave them at home while I go out! I live rurally so no take away, no drliveroo, no community and only 2 towns 15 miles in opposite directions. Still no fucking toilet roll, still no basic veg oil, no hand sanitiser, no basic vegetables, no meat. My kids eat before I do do at least I’m losing weight now, and we have now discovered those birds eye chicken burgers approved by mumsnet. (They are amazing btw!)

I feel your pain. I had nothing in the house before NHS hour started. Now I have to get up at 5.30 to get there but I do have food now. I don't stockpile though it's just so selfish.

Our small local Sainsbury’s car park has been full all the time for the last 3 weeks- I noticed prior to school shutdown as I had started to be more cautious about being near others.

WTF are these people buying !? This store is usually empty on weekdays of people.

I will probably have a meltdown before lockdown is over due to the amount of idiots I share this country with.

The only thing that seems to be spreading faster than the virus is people turning into selfish cunts.

I've been massively disappointed by the I'm alright jack attitude.

I'm lucky and live in a town where I have options, many people are not, but I will never forgot walking into Asda and seeing every shelf striped bare, like fucking locusts had attacked it. It was all so unnecessary.

Just one of many, many demonstrations of selfishness so far. We have been trying to survive on what we have and I’m trying to avoid the supermarkets completely as apparently, many aren’t bothering to observe social distancing.
Luckily there is a little corner shop nearby that I managed to pick up a few bits from but I’m not going to be able to avoid the shops forever

I really thought it would have calmed down by now. How can they afford it and where are they putting it?

We have only bought our normal shop throughout. Haven't shipped for two weeks now because we thought we'd let it die down, but it's still the same.

Trouble is there's nothing to show who's been doing normal shops and now really needs to shop and who's coming back out to top up their stockpile. I don't know the answer

But would it be so bad if they did? Children seem to get it pretty mildly, and if they get C19 and get over it, they will have immunity.

First of all, healthy children have been getting this. Mine are 14 and a 16 year old got it this week so like OP I'm worried. (One has asthma)

Secondly, there is no evidence whatsoever of immunity is thete. Unless I've missed something?

Could you try local butchers and farm shops? If you're rural do you have someone who does a veg delivery? Try looking on local FB groups.

We're farmers so live rurally and I've just written off any supermarkets, they're the worst place to be in all this.

This is my fear.

I need to shop today after a week of isolation.

I also have to pick things up for my parents in the shielding group.

Opens at 8. I've been awake since 6am wondering how early I should get there to make sure I can get in early enough to actually be able to buy the things I need.

And yes that's loo roll, milk, eggs and hand wash. But that really is need and not wants.

I also need other stuff including fresh fruit and veg. My fridge has 2 onions, 2 cucumbers and 3 yoghurts in it!

How do you know it's people being selfish? We're buying a lot more than usual ATM. But that's because we're usually all out of the house 8-5 five days a week, so we need a lot more than usual now we're home. One big shop a week and very little wastage, but it's a big shop and I know countless families in the same boat. I'm not convinced it is all panic buyers, I think most households just need more food than usual.

I think MindyStClair is right. People just need more food.

We personally have bought extra because we normally eat no lunches in the house and would get a takeaway once a week or eat out , and would eat at someone else's house once a week. We're doing none of that. So we need more food.

I went yesterday to the supermarket and there was a lot of stock. Limited people allowed in. Limited on most major items. Didn't seem to be any problem with panic buyers at all.

If stockpiling was a thing then it should have righted itself shortly after the supermarkets started limiting products. It appears that our food supply systems are more fragile than we would like.

I must admit, I don’t get why there are still food issues. The supermarkets have put restrictions on what can be bought (quantities). Yet there’s still never any meat. We are surviving on chickpeas and lentils quite happily but had hoped for a roast on Sunday - can’t get meat in any of my local supermarkets. Must admit that I won’t join the (non social distancing) queues at 8am though.

I've found that the smaller shops are far better. Our local co-op has been brilliant- quiet and relatively well stocked- enough for what we've needed anyway.

Here in Cornwall, the supermarkets are well stocked with everything.
Yesterday in lidl I couldn't navigate down the aisles for pallets of unloaded food they couldnt fit on shelves.

Where are all the stripped bare supermarkets.?

I went for a run just before 6am today, we have a local co-op that opens at 7am (no proper supermarkets locally), people were queuing outside! Today is my first day out in 14 (apart from an emergency pharmacy run), so it was interesting to see the madness.

I have found the big supermarkets to be pretty well stocked now they have introduced restrictions on how many products you can buy. I do bigger shops at the supermarkets and then the smaller shops for top ups.

Don’t assume people are being selfish. More people self isolating now certainly in my area and people are shopping for others too.

I notice you live rurally. Can you travel further out? Get together with neighbours and work explore where else you can buy food using local farmers?

But we're not because some of us haven't been shopping at all and now desperately need to go so some people are buying more than just a few bits extra because they're buying our share too.

Sadly I'm not sure we can blame panic buyers. In ordinary times 30% of calories are eaten outside the home. Now everyone is eating indoors, all the time. The supply chains cannot cope. There is plenty of food available but they cannot get it to the shelves.

If you live rurally, can you try a farm shop?

I went shopping yesterday, late morning, after 2 weeks isolation so I had pretty much nothing left in the house.
I got everything I needed, plenty of meat, bread, eggs, fruit and veg available, I even got a bag of pasta. The only thing missing was sugar.
There were gaps on shelves but it just meant you had a choice from 3 types of mayo instead of 27 so it looked empty

Not here. DH has been going around lunchtime, last week he was able to get everything bar pasta, tins of tomatoes... And sauvignon blanc. Stockpiling in style around here!

Oh and I think the shortages are at least partially due to the just in time systems not able to cope with the (mostly legitimate, I'm convinced of it) increased demand.

The people who are so proud of buying only what you need and look down on those who make sure they're well stocked up - you aren't going to get a medal at the end of this. Nobody will notice that you ran out of bog roll to prove you're a good person. I'm not saying being one of those people who try and clear shelves of toilet rolls is a good thing either. But putting a little bit extra in your trolley to make sure you don't need to do a top up shop is extremely sensible right now. As is buying freezer food. Or buying two of something instead of one if you use it a lot.
