That’s it really. Everyone else has to KEEP going to the shops to try and find essentials because the fucking knobheads have bough and keep buying up everything.

How can you social distance when you have to constantly hop from shop to shop for basic food for your children?! I’m in the shops more now than I was before this shitshow started.

I couldn’t give a fuck if I got Covid-19, but I don’t want my kids getting it, ever. I have to leave them at home while I go out! I live rurally so no take away, no drliveroo, no community and only 2 towns 15 miles in opposite directions. Still no fucking toilet roll, still no basic veg oil, no hand sanitiser, no basic vegetables, no meat. My kids eat before I do do at least I’m losing weight now, and we have now discovered those birds eye chicken burgers approved by mumsnet. (They are amazing btw!)

Fuck off selfish people and stop putting everyone else at risk you fucking selfish, fucking boggely eyed cuntvid pisswesels.

Post like these make no sense. If you are isolating or staying at home how do you know so much about what everyone else is buying? If you are in the supermarket buying things, why are you allowed to but no-one else is?

Why is it suddenly selfish to want to feed your family? Or is it only selfish when “everyone else” does it? I’m sick to the back teeth of people trying to food-shame others for doing exactly what they themselves are doing.

Obviously 90% of MNers are so selfless and martyred that they would let their entire family starve to death rather than buy a loaf of fucking bread, but in the real world most of us are just doing the best we can with what’s available.

Stop reading (and believing) the bullshit on Facebook, or at least do some critical thinking and work out when that video you are frantically sharing was filmed. The one I saw this morning was about 5 years old, yet was being copy pasted all over as an example of “discusting behavier” by “fucking pigs”. Supermarkets are limiting what people can buy, despite what your moronic next door neighbour says.

Marmie4 · 28/03/2020 07:39

Totally agree, and you see pictures of food being thrown because they can't possibly eat it. One of my friends hubby is a binman and he saw a stack of about 10 bread loaves being chucked from a single domestic address on his round yesterday. Just ridiculous.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/03/2020 07:40

@Amazemae it's not that I don't "want" to, it's that I can't afford to. I don't need to use the food bank, I'm not destitute. The food bank is for people who are really struggling. I just want to be able to get basics like loo roll. Restrictions are in place now, but they weren't until recently.

Soapytoad · 28/03/2020 07:40

Well perhaps I’m going at the wrong times then. I thought only OAPs and NHS staff were allowed early in the mornings? Maybe I’ve misunderstood what I’m supposed to or not supposed to do. It’s all a complete head fuck. I don’t live in a densely populated part of the United Kingdom with an array of immediate amenities. Small shops & farm shops have all closed their doors.

I genuinely could spend a whole working day travelling to try and find what I need! And I’m not the only one, which is why this is so frustrating. I wonder if the less populated areas are being left til last when it comes to stocking up.

Everyone thinks their vulnerable friend/aunty/man in the moon is the priority above others. So if you buy the last 2 packets of pain killers, then yes you are selfish. I’d never buy the last 2 on a shelf of anything. I’d buy one. But that’s just my standards and I have a vulnerable child at home who has had to have a life changing operation put on hold.

I really thought the supply chain would have caught up by now? I realise there maybe rationing and shortages ahead and I can deal with that. It’s the empty shelves that’s pissing me off.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 28/03/2020 07:41

I think only a tiny minority is being selfish. Most people are: eating more being at home; making sure they have enough in for a fortnight isolation (sensible given lack of delivery slots); buying for 2 or more households eg friends or family who are in self isolation.

Elieza · 28/03/2020 07:43

I’ve been going once a week and don’t eat very much but I haven’t been able to get bread or hand soap this time so I will have to go out again. Great.

I think the frustrating thing is that nobody knows who is stockpiling and who is not,as you see a person with a big trolley and it could be to feed a family of five or it could be stockpiling.

Galvantula · 28/03/2020 07:45

We managed to get a small delivery using a site called Beelivery.

We weren't ready for having to self isolate so we need some milk, eggs etc.

Basically it looks like they send a driver to do the shopping you select at a local store and drop it at your house.

The guy who brought ours had gone to Lidl and he turned up within 2 hours of ordering! Shock

BeijingBikini · 28/03/2020 07:45

So if you buy the last 2 packets of pain killers, then yes you are selfish. I’d never buy the last 2 on a shelf of anything. I’d buy one.

What? Somebody has to buy that last one - so they are selfish? Or would you prefer it just remained on the shelf forever? It's not selfish to get something you need if it is available and you're buying it in a normal quantity.

Michaelbaubles · 28/03/2020 07:45

I’ve seen a lot of posts this week from people who piously didn’t buy any extra and are not running very low on food and wishing they had bought more when they had the chance! Obviously it’s stupid to overbuy but only 3% of shoppers bought excessive amounts - 97% didn’t. They didn’t buy your share, they bought what they needed. You don’t get points for being a good girl and having a half-empty trolley, just hungry families at the end of it all.

Unescorted · 28/03/2020 07:47

I live rurally too - and the supermarkets are well stocked now. There are some products that have less choice (bread & baked beans) but are available.

A lot of people are switching to vege boxes, local farmers have eggs at the gate and you can phone up to order meat. Facebook has loads of people offering food delivery - especially those distributers who supplied restaurants.

Soapytoad · 28/03/2020 07:49

If there were TWO packets of paracetamol left on a shelf, I would buy ONE so that someone else could buy the last one.

OP posts:
Soapytoad · 28/03/2020 07:51

Well perhaps I just live in a more highly populated area of selfish fuckers then!

Darbs76 · 28/03/2020 07:52

Any butchers or other shops you could try and get a delivery from? Problem is now that people can’t get stuff, when they do see toilet roll for example, everyone buys a couple of packs at least. So we are all panic buying now. I got some extra pasta in late feb, before all this really kicked off as could see it was coming. I didn’t realise then there would be this shortage so I don’t feel bad for buying extra. When I say extra I mean 5 packs.

Oldraver · 28/03/2020 07:52

Due to shift patterns ans such we used to shop everyfew days. OH when he was off would shop everyday. We've changed that now so as not to go out to often. Today will be the firs time we have shopped for over a week.

So technically we need a weeks worth which on a weekend I'm not sure will be possible meaning he will end up having to go out again

Dongdingdong · 28/03/2020 07:54

YANBU. I'm sick of all the Mumsnet smug types posting how pleased they are to have their regular weekly slot at Ocado while telling the rest of us not to stockpile because it's selfish. Fuck off.

Beautiful3 · 28/03/2020 07:56

All the shops around here have restrictions. One shop only allows one milk and bread per day. Meat and eggs are like gold dust around here. Another better stocked shop, has increased their prices too, shopping there costs a small fortune. I didn't panic buy but I now I wish that I had, because food's running low. I've been to 4 different shops 3 times this week to find food for dinner. I haven't found any meat apart from bacon. We've eaten a lot of pizza and bacon & eggs this past week. I've lost weight as I want my children and husband (who is still working) to eat well. Cannot wait for all this to be over.

mogloveseggs · 28/03/2020 07:58

Haven't been to a supermarket for 2 weeks but need to go today so will see what it's like. Apparently asda are not obeying social distancing but tesco is so I will go there.
Up until now we have always had a full freezer as I batch cook anyway and have got milk/bread from work (independent farm shop doing deliveries).
It's fresh stuff we need and things for dinners. Could be interesting!

Splodgetastic · 28/03/2020 08:00

I don’t think it is stockpiling. I think there are actual food shortages. I haven’t been able to get bread from the milkman all week and you can’t stockpile bread!

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 28/03/2020 08:00

It’s not the shoppers it’s the supply chain. There is enough food being manufactured/grown/harvested but the big supermarkets operate on a ‘just in time ‘ basis and turning the ship takes time. It’s not selfish shoppers (it was two weeks ago) but the fact that the system isn’t up to this demand.
People may have to isolate, shop for others and feed their kids/home workers more meals than usual. It’s not selfish it’s just the situation and the supermarkets need to catch up.

Soapytoad · 28/03/2020 08:00

Darbs a panic buying backlash. It’s all just hell on earth!

OP posts:
Amazemae · 28/03/2020 08:01

@Soapytoad selfish to buy the last two packets of paracetamol for terminally ill person dying of cancer? I rarely need any myself.

Yes you are the only unselfish person in the world.

Makeitgoaway · 28/03/2020 08:02

Your kids are going to get it. The restrictions aren't going to make it go away, they are only to (try to) prevent everyone getting it at the same time. Although of course the likelihood is that you and your kids won't even notice they've had it.

Maybe that knowledge can take some of the pressure to "keep them safe" away?

Amazemae · 28/03/2020 08:03

@Waxonwaxoff0 the restrictions in place mean shelves aren’t so stripped bare like before so you should be able to get what you need now.

Oldbutstillgotit · 28/03/2020 08:04

I get you OP. Every morning one of our neighbours and his DW head out and go to all the local supermarkets stocking up . They go in to the stores separately so if there is a 2 item per person limit they can buy 4 between them. I know this as she posted photos on FB of their packed cupboards and second packed freezer. There were a lot of pissed off comments but they are unapologetic.

Amazemae · 28/03/2020 08:05

@mogloveseggs I went to Asda this week and they are observing social distancing. All the major supermarkets I have visited are observing it.
