I didn't clap

I had no idea about it! Heard the noisecat 8pm looked out the window and saw people outside clapping but couldn't see why. I'm not on social media and I didn't hear about it. Saw on the news later but I missed it. I do give a care about the NHS but now all my neighbors will think I'm terrible and don't care!

All the Tory voters in my street were out there clapping tonight. I wanted to shout 'cognitive dissonance!' but I didn't. I am a coward.

DesdemonaDryEyes · 26/03/2020 22:47

Coward and a socialist. Surely not.

Ilovemybigallotment · 26/03/2020 22:47

It’s like all the other stuff we’re being given food gifts etc it’s kind and well meant but really I don’t want any of it, apart from the free parking at work that is nice because it really pisses me off that I have to pay to park £8 a day to park at work if I park more than 4 times a fortnight.
I’m stunned today listening to how stupid people are wanting to bring visitors in “I’m lonely/bored” go to the hospital shops and looking annoyed when I say “they’re closed”. I’m no fan of Boris but everyone should do as they are told and then this will be over. Yes I’m talking to YOU, no one is exempt.

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 26/03/2020 22:49

As an NHS worker I'd rather clap those that stay at home than be clapped because that is the biggest thing you can do for us so that we can treat all who need treating and keep others safe.
So if you stay at home in lieu of a clappy thing here's a traditional mnGinCake from me.

PinkBuffalo · 26/03/2020 22:49

I am grateful to all working hard in NHS
But I not go out and clap
Lots of people here did - there were lots and lots of people outside and it was really noisy not just clapping
I not like that so I stayed inside and hoped it over soon it seemed to go on for a while

MouseDL · 26/03/2020 22:52

I didn’t go out and clap- after a 12.5 hour front line NHS shift I just couldn’t face getting up and out in my pjs as have to strip and shower the second I arrive home without touching anyone. Doesn’t mean I appreciate the NHS any less

YouTheCat · 26/03/2020 22:55

If half of the people who went and clapped will now think before they rush to a and e or the doctors when all this is over maybe this will do some good.

perfectstorm · 26/03/2020 22:57

@MadamePewter the welfare fund is to buy proper protective equipment. They don't presently have it and quite apart from the horrifying levels of contempt that shows, it makes them far likelier to spread it to other patients, too. I read a despairing article by a dpctor who said he's now wondering if he's killing patients he treats who are without Covid when he meets them, because the odds he's a carrier are so high. And he hasn't the protective gear to prevent that, no matter how careful he tries to be.

Protective equipment is there to help everyone. Yet they don't have it. And donating to this fundraiser should help ensure that they do. If any's left over to pay for therapy and counselling to help them process what is going to hit in a couple of weeks (they are not even triaging the over 65s in Italy now. No care is given. They lack resources to do so) then I for one would think that was right.

It's not a fundraiser likely to buy them kittens and caramels. And that's before noting that auxiliary workers are poorly paid, as are many nurses and even junior doctors. And they are working insane hours right now.

Marmite27 · 26/03/2020 22:58

Me either, I fell asleep putting the kids to bed Blush

Honeyroar · 26/03/2020 22:58

I didn’t either. Not because I don’t support them, but because I think it’s silly. I support them by isolating and trying to be sensible.

MadamePewter · 26/03/2020 22:59

@perfectstorm ah, well that makes sense.

Though kittens and caramels sounds nice 😃

Reginabambina · 26/03/2020 23:00

Do you really care what your neighbours think if they’re stupid enough to think you don’t care because you didn’t come to a visible spot to clap?

Monkeynuts18 · 26/03/2020 23:00

Yes I hope none of the clappers voted for Brexit either, given that’s why our NHS workers don’t have PPE.

Lynda07 · 26/03/2020 23:00

You're not unreasonable, lots of people wouldn't have known about it, I didn't. I was dozing in front of the TV when it came up. People near me let off fireworks.

I'm appreciative of what NHS workers are doing, also many others doing an important job.

MadamePewter · 26/03/2020 23:01

@perfectstorm as I say, I appreciate NHS staff.

perfectstorm · 26/03/2020 23:03

@MadamePewter if anyone starts a charity promising anyone kittens and caramels, I'm there.

MadamePewter · 26/03/2020 23:04

@perfectstorm me too!

Lunawuna · 26/03/2020 23:05

I didn’t either. I help by not panic buying or hoarding months worth of repeat prescriptions, following social distancing guidance and lockdown rules.

Virtue signalling nonsense, as demonstrated by Boris outside no10 acting as though a wee hand clap undoes a decade of underfunding, understaffing and mismanagement.

perfectstorm · 26/03/2020 23:08

Oh no, I didn't think you didn't! I'd have been snippy had I though that!

If I did sound snippy with you personally, I haven't meant to, truly. I've just been trying to tell people about this fundraiser all week, because I owe the NHS so much, and I've been appalled at how sluggish the response has been. I do completely recognise that many people honestly can't to afford right now either. But plenty who could, don't seem to want to do so... but are all to happy to ostentatiously clap. And that really grates.

They need protective equipment. And they don't have it. And the clapping, while not donating, feels like one of those separated fathers who posts memes about how his kids are his world, but won't pay maintenance.

I just want to tell everyone: yes, they're wonderful, yes, thanks for saying that, now buy them some fucking masks that work.

On that note, because apparently tonight I am queen of spam:

perfectstorm · 26/03/2020 23:09

Sorry, that post was typo central. Very tired tonight.

Moreisnnogedag · 26/03/2020 23:11

I actually don’t give a shit if it’s virtue signalling or not - you could hear loads of claps and whoops in the car park and it was actually fucking lovely and cheered not only me up but a very stressed and hardworking sister who I was chatting to on the way to her car.

If anyone asks tomorrow, I’m going to pretend I was stone faced throughout it Grin

Bouledeneige · 26/03/2020 23:13

We forgot. We were eating pizza and watching The Social Network and its just slipped out of our minds. Nothing will be worse because of it. But we probably all need the moments when we come together and feel community spirit and connection. I hope it happens again.

perfectstorm · 26/03/2020 23:13

Oh, and fewer than 800 people have shared the link, too, which makes me want to cry. If people can't donate, but are willing to share the link to their social media, then you can be pretty sure that someone else will donate. And you will have made that happen.

Share!

duckme · 26/03/2020 23:15

I missed it too. It's my sons birthday and we had just sat down to tea and to watch a film. It totally slipped my mind and now I feel absolutely awful.

Ruby1991 · 26/03/2020 23:16
