I didn't clap

I had no idea about it! Heard the noisecat 8pm looked out the window and saw people outside clapping but couldn't see why. I'm not on social media and I didn't hear about it. Saw on the news later but I missed it. I do give a care about the NHS but now all my neighbors will think I'm terrible and don't care!

I work for the NHS and I had no idea about it! Confused wondered why there were fireworks going on at 8pm but was having my dinner so only looked out the back!

SageRosemary · 26/03/2020 23:20

Our family went out, put on the lights and clapped, so did our NDN - the nurses in the house across the road were absolutely delighted - they are a long way from home and their own families, a continent away.

We appreciate all the non-medical staff efforts too in keeping essential services going at this difficult time

Cryalot2 · 26/03/2020 23:20

I wouldn't beat yourself up about it. Its not as though you did anything deliberately.
We live in a rural area and there was just sdult daughter and myself and we clapped for everyone for a moment where we were. No one would have known what we did . As long as you spare a thought I think that is fine.

Ilovemypantry · 26/03/2020 23:21

Not really sure why people are bringing politics into this, it’s completely irrelevant at this time. The clapping was for people to show their appreciation of NHS staff for their dedication and hard work during these exceptional circumstances.

noworklifebalance · 26/03/2020 23:26

I didn’t clap either - I vote Labour instead

They are not mutually exclusive.
It means a lot to people to know they are appreciated & valued.

BubblesBuddy · 26/03/2020 23:29

Lots of neighbours ignoring social distancing on the tv! Standing by their front gates right next to each other. Not what was supposed to happen I think.

PutColinInTheCorner · 26/03/2020 23:30

If every person clapping threw a tenner in the pot for the charity drive the NHS workers have set up to try to ensure they have enough fucking protective gear, personally I think that would be rather more evidence of appreciation.

Yes. That's why I didn't clap, but made a donation at 8 instead. As an NHS worker for most of my adult life, that's what I'd prefer.

perfectstorm · 26/03/2020 23:34

Thank you, @PutColinInTheCorner - and (because I'm on a roll now)

Please share it on your facebook or twitter or instagram, if you have them. Please. That's how these things can raise serious money - it's always down to numbers who see it.

Not really sure why people are bringing politics into this, it’s completely irrelevant at this time.

When they don't have decent equipment to keep them safe, and are inadequately prepared despite knowing months in advance what was happening, it really is about politics. Politics is affecting how well we can manage this pandemic, and how many NHS staff will catch it, and how many ventilators there are how many ICU beds, how much staff there is and how many will die.

Politics is a HUGE part of it. Particularly in light of spending decisions over the last few years.

I'm expecting a major Tory PR spin campaign after all this.

BubblesBuddy · 26/03/2020 23:38

Don’t you think the issue is that there isn’t enough equipment to buy, not the lack of money to buy it? Other countries have bought it. They were just too slow.

123Dancewithme · 26/03/2020 23:41

I was putting my DS to bed, otherwise I would have.

gingersausage · 26/03/2020 23:42

This thread is so nauseatingly peak MN; not the politicisation, which needs to be said, but need to make child-centred excuses for not bloody clapping. No one cares that you were putting the kids to bed or the baby fell asleep! You don’t need to come up with a worthy reason for not doing something that didn’t have to be done. If it was so important to you, why not stand in your living room or bedroom and clap - or is the point only to be seen doing it 🙄.

Namechange4nowt45 · 26/03/2020 23:47

I didn't clap, not because I'm a twat I love the nhs they are truly heros that deserve a pay rise! But our sen daughter who is I'll with a chest infection, her bedroom is downstairs near our only door and I didn't want to scare and awaken her.

FamilyOfAliens · 26/03/2020 23:47

It's nice to show appreciation, I don't deny that. But what my friends and colleagues want is appropriate PPE, proper funding, a payrise, more staff, less abuse.

You know you can clap AND donate, right?

perfectstorm · 26/03/2020 23:47

@BubblesBuddy I'm going to defer to the expertise of the medics I know sharing this, and the British Medical Association, who back it.

Obviously, you may know better.

resipsa · 26/03/2020 23:48

As someone said down thread, the NHS would have been far better placed to cope now if it hadn't been under-funded and abused by users for so long. I hope people who have drained it for years by partaking in known risky behaviour will think differently about their own behaviour and its contribution to the crisis when it’s all over.
But they won’t. So depressing. I didn't clap because I knew many in this category would be out there only for the show.

demelzaaa · 26/03/2020 23:54

gingersausage
You don’t need to come up with a worthy reason for not doing something that didn’t have to be done.

But perhaps I was knitting booties for motherless orangutan babies with cruelty-free wool substitute, dictating a new Amnesty International petition, and performing an emergency appendectomy on a stray dog with my feet at 8 o'clock. You can't prove I wasn't.

PutColinInTheCorner · 26/03/2020 23:55

You know you can clap AND donate, right?

Maybe some of us past and present NHS staff, and members of the public, didn't want to clap. That's ok too you know.

gingersausage · 26/03/2020 23:57

@demelzaaa but did you CLAP?!?

BubblesBuddy · 27/03/2020 00:01

The medics don’t presumably know what the manufacture/supply of equipment is like. By accounts I’ve read, it’s lack of the required supply from manufacturers. Some of whom are abroad and other countries need supplies too. The need to produce more and distribute stocks is the issue. It’s not money right now. It’s a supply issue.

demelzaaa · 27/03/2020 00:01

Well, obviously, since not clapping is tantamount to wishing actual DEATH on all frontline NHS staff. I'm not a murderer. I'm really great.

LorenzoStDubois · 27/03/2020 00:02

Its a pity everyone is clapping yet still voting Tory.

Nichelette · 27/03/2020 00:02

Didn't clap, but I will donate in the morning because I'm too lazy to get out of bed to get my card now Blush. I think a lot of people don't know about the page. I haven't seen it before. More sharing needed!

DollyDaydream70 · 27/03/2020 00:04

@MikeFromSpaced From this NHS worker, thank you :-)

oakleaffy · 27/03/2020 00:04

I heard a sound that reminded me of trotting horses, then rain.....I looked at the clock, and saw it was 8pm, so did join in..I'd only heard of it on LBC radio.
It was dark, so doubt people would notice ?
