I didn't clap

I had no idea about it! Heard the noisecat 8pm looked out the window and saw people outside clapping but couldn't see why. I'm not on social media and I didn't hear about it. Saw on the news later but I missed it. I do give a care about the NHS but now all my neighbors will think I'm terrible and don't care!

I'm a front line NHS worker and I didn't clap (because it would be a bit like clapping myself which would be odd).

It is a nice gesture but I do find that people have short memories, and I suspect that in 6 months when it's all over, most members of the public will go straight back to abusing the NHS services and it's staff just like before. I'm sorry to sound cynical but I'm just trying to be realistic.

QuestionableMouse · 26/03/2020 21:20

Ohh is that why there was a wave of fireworks going off?.

I totally appreciate the idea behind it the execution probably wasn't the best.

Laaf80 · 26/03/2020 21:20

Thanks for the GoFundMe link I’ve donated.

I could hear fireworks for this. I wish that cash had gone to the fund/food bank or whatever instead.

ChickLitLover · 26/03/2020 21:21

We didn’t either. The same neighbours that are out clapping were having house parties and bbqs a couple of days ago. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 26/03/2020 21:21

I wouldn’t worry. Only about half of my neighbours were out clapping but I don’t think any less of the ones that weren’t - I’m sure they appreciate the NHS just as much as we do!

TroysMammy · 26/03/2020 21:22

After a nearly 11 hour shift as a GP Receptionist I didn't have the energy to get up off my arse to participate. I do appreciate everyone who works in the NHS especially my colleagues.

firstimemamma · 26/03/2020 21:23

I saw on the news lots of people stood out on the street all bunched together and clapping. There were loads of them so I doubt they all lived together. What about social distancing ffs?!

MigginsMrs · 26/03/2020 21:23

I didn’t either, forgot all about it tbh and was eating my dinner

curlymom · 26/03/2020 21:24

I was at the local shop looking for eggs. I heard it. I respect the nhs always, clapping or not

Bowerbird5 · 26/03/2020 21:25

The person who asked Britain to do this was on the radio today and said it would be great if people did it every Thursday at 8pm so you may get another chance.

Vinorosso74 · 26/03/2020 21:25

It's great that people appreciate what the frontline NHS staff are doing. It's off the back of the random applause for frontline health workers in Madrid the other week rather than a new thing. It is good but I'm sure those workers would prefer to have the correct PPE and for the NHS to be properly funded and resourced.
The cynic in me knows that this all this extra work will be forgotten about this time next year. I also wonder how many of the people who put themselves forward as volunteers will go ahead with it.

FranKatzenjammer · 26/03/2020 21:28

I was cooking and forgot Blush

Timetospare · 26/03/2020 21:29

Gruesome virtual signalling, and ignores the basic issue that if you vote to underfund, you get what we have,
A crisis.

mement0mori · 26/03/2020 21:31

£100,000 in a whole week.. From the whole country

I hadn’t seen this before. Happy to donate. I think there’s a shortage of ppe so prob supply issues also.

I did clap for solidarity but I’ve just read a whole thread of people saying how patronising it is which is sad as I don’t think that is the intention. It’s hard to know what you can do when you are stuck at home and ordered not to go anywhere.

I feel so frustrated. I have friends and family who work for the NHS, and even if I didn’t I’d appreciate NHS workers. But I didn’t clap. It feels so futile. Particularly galling to see someone on my FB post about how her whole street came out to clap. This person lives in a an area that the Tories won by 20k votes in December. I just feel so utterly full of despair :(

NotNegan · 26/03/2020 21:33

I didn't either. I opened my door and my dog ran out so I had her in my arms.

And I didn't vote Tory, either.

InanOcadoQueue · 26/03/2020 21:34

Thanks for the link, happy to donate. It's years of underfunding and we need to rethink as a country and make the NHS the priority and give the proper funding it needs.

CanICelebrate · 26/03/2020 21:37

I feel so guilty that we completely forgot. My youngest dc was really excited but then we lost track of time Sad I suffer with anxiety and it’s made me feel really awful that I didn’t do it

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 26/03/2020 21:39

Some bellend near me let fucking fireworks off. Fireworks!

Hurricane10 · 26/03/2020 21:39

HI. I went for a pee at 8 cos whatever was on the telly (Dh watching something to do with da wawar, was finished). Heard the chearing and clapping and realised so went downstairs and outside and clapped (and wound up dog to bark, setting off all the other dogs within earshot).
Don't worry, I really didn't expect my scheme to make it a big thing but the sound from the flats was huge but my immediate neighbours (terrace) only about 2 in 10 were out, I think they either didn't realise, were at work (2 work for NHS) or are students (my immediate neighbours) and are not sure how to react.

Benjispruce · 26/03/2020 21:41

@bananaontoast1 I did both Wink

1forsorrow · 26/03/2020 21:42

I didn’t clap either. I show my appreciation by not voting Tory. you and me both. I think if I lived near a hospital I'd do it but there are no NHS staff near me, one of my kids is a nurse, DIL is a doctor so I thank them and support them in any way I can. Clapping for the sake of it doesn't seem very useful to me but each to their own.

WitsEnding · 26/03/2020 21:43

I didn't. My Tory neighbours did, they are self-isolating for medical reasons and if we both stand on our doorsteps we're only three feet apart. Windows don't open.

I appreciate NHS workers, including close relatives, and have stood in the city centre more than once to get people to petition against their low pay and lack of funding.
Clapping strikes me as spectacularly pointless.

Cunninglittlevixen · 26/03/2020 21:44

You don't need social media to know what's going on.

xanthippe8 · 26/03/2020 21:44

I live in a firework, rule flouting area too. Twats.
