To wonder where the clap is for the rest of the key workers

I fully support the NHS. But where's the clap for the supermarket staff slogging their guts out completely at risk. The delivery drivers? The teachers the utility workers, police and every one who so far is bearing to brunt of this crisis. If you're one of those other keyworkers....I applaud you too, as much as the NHS.

@drinkygin let's agree to disagree. I'm personally happy with my wages. I'm happy with all aspects of my nursing care and truly feel care and compassion towards my patients. I'm skilled in the role I'm in and feel confident in my delivery of care. Yes our wages should be more in line with fellow allied professions but I'm certainly not poorly paid

DaisyDreaming · 26/03/2020 22:19

I was thinking about all sorts of key workers and volunteers as I clapped

drinkygin · 26/03/2020 22:19

I agree with you on the skillls/delivery of care/compassion, absolutely. Staffing levels, workload, sometimes going 12 hours with no break, etc-I don’t know a profession that pays similar to nursing with those conditions.

gassylady · 26/03/2020 22:28

@Pat123dev it hasn’t happened because you haven’t organised it maybe?

Countrygirl38 · 26/03/2020 22:34

I do see where you are coming from OP. I was clapping for all keyworkers tonight. I work in care and we are also potentially risking our last lives as some of our clients are bound to have or the virus and we don't have adequate PPE like many in the NHS.. It isn't anywhere near as risky as say being a nurse or a doctor in intensive care. But we are doing our very best and we do this on the minimum wage and with a prime minister that thinks we are unskilled. I think the NHS are amazing and they deserve so much praise but like I say I was clapping for everyone helping in this pandemic. Also every nurse I know on Facebook has one of the "I can't stay home" frames. Not everyone is doing it for attention more for awareness I think. When you have been told you are unskilled then yes I want people to be aware of what we are doing. Hopefully afterwards the pay will be increased to a decent living wage

ScorpionQueen · 26/03/2020 22:37

I'm a primary teacher and finding it really hard at the moment, but it is not comparable to looking after Corona patients in a hospital, or trying to deliver healthcare in such conditions.
Lots of people are working hard, lots are at increased risk by doing so, but none so much as health care professionals.
I applaud you all.

I was clapping for everyone who still has to leave the house to go to work at the moment.

CoronaLime · 26/03/2020 22:38

It's in my penis ofc Wink

Jupiters · 26/03/2020 22:43

I also can't stand those new FB "I can't stay at home, I'm a Keyworker" show-off profile pic photoframes. It's telling that you never see NHS staff do all that
Funnily enough I've seen the opposite... The people I know on my Facebook who are in the NHS have all added an "I'm proud to work for the NHS" banner to their profile picture. The people who are now considered "keyworkers" (supermarket staff ect) haven't been adding banners. Just goes to show a lot of different people do a lot of different things!

RoseDog · 26/03/2020 22:45

I've had a few people ask me today why dp is still going to work in an oil refinery...people don't seem to realise how much of their daily life relies on oil and it's byproducts!

runrabbitrunrunrun · 26/03/2020 22:46

I wiped my own arse today. Where’s my clap ffs?

MrsToothyBitch · 26/03/2020 22:57

I think it should have been a key worker clap although the NHS are doing an excellent job seemingly running on goodwill at present.

Also as a former retail manager (non essential but customers don't vary their behaviours much between shops), the "you guys are the real key workers/lets hear it for shop staff" things I saw on social media last week actually did piss me off- perhaps we'll get some respect and human courtesy now. I doubt it though. Having seen how the public usually treat us, the current gushiness does not ring at all true and will be forgotten immediately.

DeeCeeCherry · 26/03/2020 23:12

Jupiter I have not seen a single NHS worker put up that frame, or any frame that says they're proud to work for the NHS. I'm amazed people have time to play Whataboutery over the people looking after Corona victims tbh but as said, if any health concerns pop up in future your supermarket keyworker can help.

Why don't people seek their own shine if they're so inclined instead of envying what they perceive to be someone else's? Better still start your own thing, round of applause for everyone who's a keyworker.

runrabbitrun round of applause for youSmile

Madein1995 · 26/03/2020 23:27

Tbh I think it was more a keyworker clap than just an NHS clap.

Also let's be honest, there are different types of keyworkers. I work in CJS and am technically a keyworker, I went in today . From next week none of my team is required to be there, unless it's to support teams who have to be in, in which case individuals will get notified. The teams who are in next week will only be seeing people for 2mins to get a number and tell them to go away (politely). There's tape all over the office to ensure people observe social distancing.

That is in no way similar to working on a ward full of corona patients, caring for them daily while having inadequate PPE. Yes of course supermarket staff ate working hard and are at increased risk. Not quite the same risk as working on a ward and giving intimate care. Yes bus drivers are at risk. They are behind a screen and again there's tape on buses. Yes carers are at risk as they're doing personal cares. They're not doing so on wards.

Yes all keyworkers are important. But let's not be confused here. The NHS, the police, the carers - they're the ones at higher risk.

dreamingbohemian · 26/03/2020 23:32

if any health concerns pop up in future your supermarket keyworker can help

Fine, and next time you need to eat, just pop round to A&E Hmm

You can reject the whataboutery without being snide about the people keeping everyone fed.

limpbizkit · 26/03/2020 23:40

There is this conception that nurses everywhere are working on 'wards full of corona patients' they're usually in isolated areas. Us nurses are actuary better protected with PPE. Supermarket workers are serving patients thar have it with no diagnosis and they have no PPE. I hate, the martyrdom of nurses or by proxy martyrdom. We do a job we wished to go into generally speaking we're protected if working with viruses and infectious disease. I'm grateful I'm earning. I'm certainly not going to lose my job because of coronavirus? Many will. I'm grateful I receive a wage certainly ample to feed my family on and give them decent enough things in life.

Femail · 26/03/2020 23:42

oh come on......it can be for everyone can't it?
don't be stupid, retail workers are facing a bit of abuse not watching people die

A bit of abuse try having people spit at you I've seen and people coughing in your face. Shouting at you as there no toilet roll. Get your facts correct before with the stupid remark

dreamingbohemian · 26/03/2020 23:43

Thank you limpbizkit, your words mean a lot to me right now Flowers

And thank you for everything you do!

HoobleDooble · 26/03/2020 23:46

I'm still going out to work and I've been worrying that I MIGHT come into contact with someone who is infected. The frontline NHS staff are going into work knowing that they are DEFINITELY going to be around people who are infected ... and yet they still go. To me that makes them incredibly brave. Yes, all us key workers are doing our bit, keeping things rolling, but these people are putting their lives on the line, they deserve the recognition.

MySonIsAlsoNamedBort · 26/03/2020 23:46

Go ahead and organise a clap then.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/03/2020 23:47

I work for the nhs in a mental health unit - we are working our arses off and under huge pressure and at risk as so many are

I joined in and clapped and felt proud to this wasn’t for me it was for those that are in icu what they are going through is a nightmare
I also clapped for paramedics too they are often overlooked

limpbizkit · 26/03/2020 23:49

@dreamingbohemian Smile glad to have helped Flowers

donquixotedelamancha · 26/03/2020 23:53

I was clapping for the heroic Pets at Home staff. I wish someone had told me it was for bloody doctors and nurses, I wouldn't have bothered.

limpbizkit · 26/03/2020 23:56

@HoobleDooble that's a lovely sentiment and I thank you.... But us nurses have got to stop this 'putting our lives on the line' martyrdom. We're not. Not one nurse would ever knowingly put their own life at risk (especially with families which most will have of some description) to 'walk into' an environment which could result in their own death. There's two people I'd throw my life on the line for willingly and without a second thought and that's my kids. Most humans are the same. Would I walk into a ward full of patients with coronavirus? Yes. But I'd be expecting equipment to fully protect myself - the appropriate PPE. That's sensible. 'risking your life' is not. If I was expected to as with every other nurse and Dr I'd refuse because it's inhumane.
